@@LarryLawtonJewelThief Been trying to send you a direct comment for a real hot minute now and I’m glad I found your KZbin @ handle so that way there’s a hope in hell that you might read this. First of all, I must say, I love what you do I love how you’re so unapologetically, honest and it really inspires a lot of people. Myself included. I got to be completely honest with you. I’m not in America I’m in Canada. (thank God or not just my future but my entire life would’ve looked a lot different and not for the better). I have a couple questions for you and I’m not saying that none of your viewers have been down the rabbit hole like you have, and I’m gonna keep it real. I have as well, but my situation was both serious and done out of necessity. I’ve turn things around, which brings me to my question: First of all, if you don’t know what a pardon is because it doesn’t exist in America it means between either three years or five years after you’ve fully completed your disposition meaning probation, parole, jail time everything the day that’s over with misdemeanor you have to wait three years felony 5 to 7 depending on it non-qualifiers are thank God anything to do a sex offences they can’t get pardons. But it means that your records completely erased you get your mugshots DNA taken out of the system fingerprints everything. I get to do it one time in Canada and that’s as an adult anything before you’re 18 is automatically erased. Don’t you think Americans would be much better off and ex-cons would be much better off and have a real shot in the future and the rate of recidivism would be much lower if pardons were available to Americans like they are Canadians? Do you see after my pardon I’m going to law school I have the grades I’m studying for my LSAT now and I’m gonna be one of the very few most people don’t advertise that they have a pardon for obvious reasons, but one of the very few lawyers who’s actually had the experience of sitting on both sides of the glass. What do you think that would do and how much better or worse do you think your society would be if that were even a remote possibility or if it ever came to fruition? Thank you so much and thank you for inspiring people to not be ashamed of the fact that they were in tough situations and had to pay the price with giving the government a couple years two or more of their life. Thank you for being an inspiration for that.

There’s a famous case from 1984 in Texas where a father shot and killed the man who kidnapped and molested his son. There’s video of him doing this. The grand jury actually refused to indict him, because the public sympathized with him so much. If he had been sent to prison, would he have any extra respect from the other prisoners?

Love your video's my guy, pushing the dude down the stairs was classic! If I learned anything from being in prison is to be RESPECTFUL cause like you said, By simply bumping into someone without saying excuse me or pardon me can get you messed up in jail/prison or on the streets, even walking in between two people talking you say excuse me. After living in Washington heights for so long, I had to learn how to say excuse me in Spanish. But it's cool that we were locked up in the same place, USP Atlanta. Do you remember a guard name officer holly, he was usually monitoring the hall in between the units, always busting your balls in the day time if your trying Togo the yard when your supposed to be at work lol! I heard during the Cuban riots, they stuck a mop stick up his ass lol oh btw I was in b3

Even getting out of the Navy after a couple years it's nuts to re-adjust. I can't imagine how much more complicated it is adjusting back from prison. I've gotten tired of choosing clothes every day and switched to set clothes I wear. I have five shirts of the same color, seven dress shirts of the same color as the T-shirts, and nine pairs of the same black pants. It took years to get used to seeing guys with hair even touching their ear. And that was just from four years in the military.

I'm a big believer on reform as the goal of prison and all data points to treating people fairly as producing much lower rates of recividism. But even if you don't believe that, why wouldn't you want prisoners to have TVs in their rooms? If I were running a prison it wouldn't bother me at all if prisoners were chilling watching TV and jerking off. There is a hell of a lot worse they could be doing.

If we want prisoners to enter society as functioning respectful people who contribute to society, we need to teach them to be functioning respectful people - which means treating them that way. Unfortunately, like you have often said, the US prison system is about control and about money - and unfortunately, may US citizens are far too focused on prison as being some form of revenge instead of wanting it to be a source of rehabilitation. Anyone who turns themself around after prison, they're doing it against the odds, because all the abuses that happen in prison stack up to make prisoners worse people. We need to fix prison.
@SpartanArmy117
@SpartanArmy117 8 ай бұрын
It's not revenge, it's called justice. And while I agree many things that happen inside these prisons are totally unacceptable, it's not a problem with how the system is supposed to work, it's a problem of no one enforcing it. To your point though, no these people largely aren't rehabilitated because 1. our culture actually lifts up criminality now so of course people are going to lean into it and 2. these people with sentences like Larry was talking about largely aren't capable of being rehabilitated. If you're in a Max prison for 30 years it's likely because you've done something that shows an incredible disregard for anyone but yourself, that person can't just magically be taught to value the lives of others. And if somehow that person is capable of changing and wants to be a productive citizen on the outside they'll overcome any obstacles to do it. That'll be an unpopular comment on this channel but it's the truth, actions have consequences and what we've done to our culture does as well.

The being "Institutionalized " is REAL! I experienced this myself. Jail to institution, to long term inpatient rehab. 10 years in total and I remember I couldn't go to a store either. Too stimulating for my brain to handle. But yet this society thinks we are all supposed to be great citizens afterwards, but how can we do that when we are put into places that just throw us Away with zero society life skills. ??? Ughh. I still get anxious when going to certain places like Home Depot or Walmart.

Believe it or not some long serving veterans get the same problem.. I know the problem is real and now after that bloody dreaded lurgie in 2020 kept everyone locked up and isolated so do some of the public. Some of my clients have not been able to leave their homes since 2019. It really is a real problem.
@SpartanArmy117
@SpartanArmy117 8 ай бұрын
I'm very sorry you experienced that, but let me give you the other perspective. You're putting the burden on the same society that you offended against. A prisoner is in there because they have wronged their community and then when faced with the difficulties of that decision afterward they now want to also blame society because getting back in the community is hard. I'm sorry but no, I understand it's difficult and I have great sympathy for that person, however, they put themselves in that situation. The act of clearing the barriers to reentry into society is actually a part of the sentence in a way. It shows that person is serious about turning a new leaf and reintegrating.

Recidivism was less of a problem when prison taught inmates work skills and there was a focus on rehabilitating and releasing once each individual was ready and safe to be released into society. A family member went to prison for armed robbery before I was born. He had to work on the prison’s farm. He secured a job as a farmhand for his parole. He never did anything that he couldn’t verify wasn’t illegal again. While in prison he gained a college degree in computer programming and spent years as a programmer until he had some kind of break and withdrew from cubicle life and took to driving trucks. Later I had a couple cousins keep getting locked up, released and locked back up again. Over and over and over and over. One cousin got habitual offender after receiving certifications in prison for a few trades. Something changed and made going back to prison more common.

My first day out my mind kept yelling "right side"! People in sidewalks just walk, they do not walk in an organized way. That's the first thing. You walk around feeling like everyone is looking at you, ready to confront you. It took a few hours, I just had to try to remember to be nice and smile. Once you get a pedophile killer, you expect him to handle business all the time. I also know men who got out that spent 10 years in the hole. This was Seward prison in Alaska. Robert Betts, a contract killer. I see him these days and he talks to himself in the street. I knew Betts when he was normal 1985. He was released 2014.

In NY, I have $40,000 restitution my family sent me money once they took 75% of it. So I had my family stop sending me money after that. My commissary money was $2.00. NY takes out the restitution and court fees. When I went to my parole hearing and this is the only felony that I have. They brought up my misdemeanors that I did way back in 2004. They hit me for it. I had a split bid 1 and a half to 4 and a half. In NY they got a thing called Conditional Release basically it’s early release if you do your recommended program and no disciplinary actions. I went in in 2015 got out 2017 but I was on paroled for a year and a half. When I got out it was a scenery overload. Over eating because the prison only had soy food. My attitude was really horrible ready to fight people. I had to ask my friend what are emojis. My friends do ask about prison life and what’s it like in Attica. They know I tell it how it is.

1:47 oh my God, Larry you literally took the words out of my mouth as my thoughts were literally making me want to speak out while watching your segment here no, they do not treat people differently if they’re innocent. IN FACT IT COULD put you in grave danger, if the other inmates know for certain, or even think that you were short timer. And that’s especially true if you’re in an institution where there’s large percentage of the inmate population doing either life which I call the walking death penalty, or in essence life because they get late some Cecconi in a sentence say 500, and 800 and thousand hundred whatever years that’s just ridiculous so do you really does anybody really believe that they’re gonna celebrate somebody going home innocent or not?! Fuck no! And besides, what are these people have to lose they’re never gonna see the light of day ever again? Hell, worst thing that could happen is probably what I bet. Some people really would prefer in Florida or thing that could happen. Is they end up getting going on death row for another killing by killing some loud mouth ass bragging about the fact he’s going home in a week or a year or even five years. The fact he’s going home at all. In fact in Canada now you see we have pardons thank God because now I need to be one of the few, if only persons who has gone to jail going to prison got note, gotten a pardon, which means your records wiped after five years you have to pay the thousand dollars and pull out a ton shit ton of forms and now I am finishing up my last year of undergrad, and I’m going to be going to law school to become a criminal defence attorney. And that’s all thanks to Candace pardon system. How cool is that? Imagine being represented by somebody who truly wants to give everyone the most vehemently, the move, the strongest, most passionate defence they can possibly offer because they to of been on the other side of that glass.

I can speak to your second question. Before the plague years, and then my own health issues, I was a volunteer in prison, outside clergy. I conducted services for religions the chaplains Didn't understand- meaning, in my state, all religion's save Southern Baptist- even the Catholics had to have an outside volunteer. I was not welcome in most prisons, but there was a breakthrough. There were many lawsuits, but they were always handled by dragging it or until the offender got out, so it was moot. But there was one who was in a top security prison I wasn't allowed in, but his sentence was so long DOC couldn't wait it out- though they tried. Eventually the state Supreme Court told DOC to provide trouble services or pay $20,000/day, and so they let me in. But the point of the story is the guy was in for murder. He had been beat the man who raped his child to death. The state said the first 3-4 blows were justified, but the next 40 were excessive. (He only stopped when he collapsed from fatigue). He was a hero in the facility. So we conducted religious services for the next 4 1/2 years, but the split second he died of cancer, we were thrown out again.but I know from some guys who've gotten out and I'm still clergy for his legend lives on.

Were there any TV shows you wanted to catch up on after getting re-acclimatized to the outside world and if so did you hope the shows had long runs because you liked them, or short runs because, say, catching up on seven years of a favourite 22-episode a season series is a long time commitment?

I saw a prison riot on a show called FBI:Most Wanted, and they took gaurds and cooks hostage, they was killing and fighting with each other, they had to call SWAT in and everything, has there ever been a prison riot that crazy, if so, I'd like to hear about it, and was you involved in it and what happened before, after, and during the riot, and what started it in the first place.

Larry i got a Q for you next Q&A video, what happens with a guy that comes into prison with a whole list of charges ( those are not really important right now ) and one SO case where he has dated a girl who said she was of age and he does something she dont like and she says he r*p*d her? Do prisoners see this and act accordingly or dont it matter if the inmate did it by accident and by someone he thought was of age or he did it lets see 5 times with under age girls and he knew they were underage?

5:15 wen I illegally spent 3 months in jail, got released after getting put in solitary for 2 weeks over a snitch who got mad, I couldn't even figure out what to eat out the refrigerator. Didn't know what to make, I knew I wanted to eat, but what can I eat? Add in the jail food wasn't great on my intestines, took over 2 weeks for me to shit normally again, eating really rich food and all. Even binging on tacobell the second time i went Didn't help.

Something I've noticed when people are talking about prison is that they think the idea of ordering restitution is often meaningless. This is especially the case when it's some absurd amount of money and the guy is doing forever. But it does make a very real difference in some states. For instance, in West Virginia the state started taking 40% of ANY money an inmate got, whether it was money we sent to him or the eighty cents an hour he earned working. In some states, or so I've heard, it's 100%. So it may not help the people on the outside who are supposed to get it but it definitely hurts the inmate. Do they do that in the Federal system? Anyway, it might make for an interesting video if you could track down the information per state.
