@光宗耀祖啊 Ironic that you're saying that with chinese characters on your name handle. Anyways, just like the saying: "People dancing will look like fools for those who can't hear the music." Apparently, you can't hear the music due to your limited knowledge and understanding. So please, do yourself a favor and study more. Also, why did you use the term indio as if it's derogatory? Seems like you suffer with colonial mentality yourself. Even Jose Rizal disagrees when he established Los Indios Bravos. He held the term indio with pride. You know why? 'cause he doesn't suffer from colonial mentality which I ironically observe from ethnocentrist. They love bringing the victim card and keep on viewing history with cognitive dissonance by rejecting historical realities, it's kinda sad to be honest. But then again, study more.

Yep, my great-grandparents were Mestizos from Iloilo and Negros. I was fortunate enough to get to know my great-grandmother, and it was important to he that every Sunday after church, we'll visit her house for a small snack along with my other cousins, and she only spoke in Ilonggo or Spanish. They have a set of rules used into talking, that a person who only speaks Mandarin couldn't understand, but even then, they are not considered as language a but a dialect. (A langauge is a sytem of communication that can be used by almost all individual living in a nation). So we are not trilingual, but bilingual (English and Filipino. Consider this for a second. Apparently, (I saw it on a video, read it somewhere). Apparently there are 4 thousand spanish words, or spanish derived words in the standardised tagalog language called Filipino. Then there's about 6 thousand spanish or derived spanish words in the Cebuano language. Polygots tells you you need 500 words to be able to "start" verbally communicating-never mind the accent, grammar. Por eso all Filipinos have to do is recognise which words came or are spanish and and we are good to go, pero that's easier said than done! Por ejemplo. Recently I learned sige (Filipino) is similar to sigue (Spanish) and told my mum about and she didnt' know and we are both chavacanos and because she's older generation, they learned spanish at school.

I'm Cebuano Filipino. Growing up, I learned English as my first language from watching cartoons, then learned my home dialect as a kid, and later I had the option to learn Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. I had a hard time learning Mandarin as nobody spoke it outside of school, even my full-blooded Chinese friends. I'm half-Chinese, but I much preferred learning Spanish and took up a minor course of Spanish in college. That was 20 years ago. Now, I'm using Duolingo and vids on youtube like yours to learn more about my Spanish heritage as well as, expanding my skill at speaking Spanish. Gracias amigas!

There are records that disputes the common theory that Spanish was not widely spoken in The Philippines. Some of them are records from US colonialists showing that around 70% (10% as their only language, 60% as their second language) of Filipinos spoke Spanish. That's a majority, hence debunking the theory that Spanish was not wide-spread. Moreso if we look at modern evidence. Court proceedings are in Spanish, same with public documents, newspapers, even music and certain movies. Even coca-cola ads are in Spanish. That shows that the language was wide-spread and used by the majority. There is an account of a US colonialist stating that Spanish was the language of government, business, and socialization. And that one will have difficulties dealing with the colony without knowing Spanish.

First, not many Spaniards migrated to the Philippines compared to other Spanish speaking countries. Second, since there are fewer Spaniards compared to the locals, the Spaniards (friars) decided it was easier if they would learn the local languages (not vice versa) in order to spread Christianity much easier. Third, if the pre-colonial Filipinos were taught Spanish, it would be difficult for the colonizers to control the people since the early Filipinos would now be able to understand everything the government plans (may it be good or bad). That is why only those elite/upper class were able to speak Spanish and mostly they learned it by studying abroad.

@Scout555 3 жыл бұрын
This fact is often missed. Only the favored mestizos or purely subjugated elites would gain favors from their Spain oppressors. Their goal was to erase the rich past and history of the various tribes. Once the generation of elites finally figured this out, the revolution on an elites level called the katipunan grew and independence was sought.

I’m an American but ethnically I’m Filipino. I’m also learning Spanish out of initiative due to a steady growth of Latinos coming to Hawaii for work. I’m even friends with a Mexican who I became extremely quick friends with. My parents and my wife are actually Ilocano speakers so I can speak what they speak though I don’t necessarily consider myself fluent compared to them.

The Philippines was a colony of Spain and Mexico was a viceroy and it ruled the Philippines on behalf of the kIng of Spain. There is a galleon trade that allowed the Filipinos to trade and settled in Caribbean and Sputh America. USA ruled the Philippines for 50 years, then Jewish migrated to the country during World War 2, then White Russians fled Stalin and settled in the Northern part and Middle eastern from Iraq and Iran arrived. All of them intermarried with the locals.

The generation that spoke Spanish the most was the ones who were born during the late Spanish period and before the American annexation of the Philippines around1900. They would were adults during the American period. Examples of which are Presidents Aguinaldo (1898), Quezon (1935), Laurel (1943), Osmena (1944), Roxas (1946), Quirino(1948), Garcia (1957) - all of whom spoke Spanish fluently. This generation completely died out by 1960s. Those born in the American period learned English as the main language for education, but also Spanish. Presidents Macapagal(1960), Corazon Aquino (1986), and Magsaysay (1953) were fluent in Spanish while Ferdinand Marcos (1960) and Ramos (1992) were not as proficient in speaking but probably understood pretty well. Arroyo (2004) was fluent in Spanish probably was encouraged by her father who was Diosdado Macapagal. Estrada (2000, Duterte (2016), Ferdinand Marcos Jr (2022) must have taken Spanish classes in their school years but they have not exhibited any Spanish speaking ability. Benigno Aquino III (2010) speaks a little Spanish. This is my parents generation (1960) - they had Spanish classes but can't really speak it because it wasn't in use. My generation (1980s) was the first generation to have almost no Spanish class at all. I only had the opportunity when I moved to the US. Hopefully this is the low point. As Philippines develops more, hopefully, we can offer Spanish to most schools as an elective. With a more interconnected world, it will be easier for those studying Spanish to connect with native Spanish speakers globally.

spanish subjects like english are being taught especially in college.it is included as one of your minor subjects. not sure but during your first and second year in college its mandatory to finish a spanish subjects being like spanish 1,2, 3 and 4.spanish 1 and 2 for ur first yr in college. and spanish3 and 4 during your second year in college.during my time, that was 1988,it was my first year in college. i remember that was the time spanish was removed in the school curriculumn, as ordered by the dept, of education. meaning spanish is removed completely from the entire philippine education.that was the end of spanish subject in the philippine education.....more so that only a few filipinos benefitted from speaking spanish, and few filipinos go to spain....more are going to US, thus english 1,2,3,4,5,6 were introduced.....for now no idea about how many english subjects are taken up in college...all our grandmas are good in spanish til english was replaced in the school curriculumn....as what they say better teach the filipinos nihonggo, japanese language. as more filipinos wanted to go to japan than spain......
