Re languages, I highly recommend learning Latvian 2gether with the prettiest languages ever created Norse / Icelandic / Dutch / English / Norwegian / Gothic and also Welsh / Breton / Cornish / Faroese / Danish which are the prettiest and most refined and most poetic and most heavenly and coolest languages ever that are way too pretty not to know, plus they are all very easy, as pretty languages with pretty words are naturally easy to memorize and are naturally fun to learn! I am quite new to Latvian, as I only discovered it a few months ago, and it seems to be a pretty language with mostly pretty words, from what I have seen so far, so it’s on my list of target languages, same as Slovene, and I am total beginner in Latvian, so I only know a few words at the moment, and I’ve just started learning the sounds and alphabet, and I noticed that many words are similar to the Lithuanian words, and when I see a word that is prettier in Lithuanian I use it in Latvian, and I also do the same in Slovene when I see a word in Slovak that is prettier than the Slovene word, then every word will be pretty, for example, the word for juice isn’t pretty, so I will use a word that is pretty that I can find in Lithuanian, and the Š should always be pronounced as a normal S sound at the end of the word and in certain letter combinations, because SH is one of those problematic sounds as CH / R / TS etc that must be used in only a few words and that must be pronounced as soft as possible to sound good, and a prettier word for store is also necessary, so it would be a good idea if some words would have two terms, and at least one of them should be super pretty! Anyways, words such as so and good and teaching or teacher and You only reflect me and cannot be misused by ppl and must be edited out, and even though some of the info is helpful, some of the pīktūręs are very dīstręspectful to food (for example, the kid dïstręspecting the fruits etc) and nature / ręínbøwz and the one for süït too, and other examples should have been used instead for those!

By the way, the letter R used in Latvian is a soft normal R aka a tap, not a rolled R, tho many ppl tend to refer to it as a rolled R, even though it isn’t, as rolled Rs are harsh and sound as a motor or engine sound, and some examples of rolled Rs or thrilled Rs would be the Rs used in Spanish by most speakers and the Rs used in French by most speakers, which are very harsh and don’t sound good, so I highly recommend using a soft normal R in all languages, as soft Rs have the best sounds, and I always use soft normal Rs in Spanish and French etc - the R used in Latvian is a tap, and it is the same type of R used in Norse and Icelandic and one of the Rs used in Brazilian Portuguese, which are also taps aka soft normal Rs!

That was probably the best latvian teaching video I have ever seen! Thank you so much for taking the time for making such a detailed, culture-centered and fun video! Wish you were my teacher. My grandparents came from latvia and my mom was born in a colony, but they moved away and she forgot the language and didn't teach it to me. My absolute dream is to learn it. Pleeease keep on doing these videos, if you have the time. Liels paldies!!

There are many similarities, but Latvian is like the pretty and easy version of Russian, as Russian isn’t a pretty language as it has mostly non-pretty words, so Latvian and Slovene are way better options than Russian or Polish etc, and, I highly recommend learning Latvian 2gether with the prettiest languages ever created Norse / Icelandic / Dutch / English / Norwegian / Gothic and also Welsh / Breton / Cornish / Faroese / Danish which are the prettiest and most refined and most poetic and most heavenly and coolest languages ever that are way too pretty not to know, plus they are all very easy, as pretty languages with pretty words are naturally easy to memorize and are naturally fun to learn! In truth, Russian and most other languages are extremely overrated and aren’t pretty with mostly pretty words, so I cannot understand why many learners try to learn them instead of learning the pretty languages, and only about 50 to 100 languages are pretty, and only the pretty languages should be learnt, and when it comes to Slavic languages, Slovene and Latvian are the prettiest and most refined Slavic languages, as they have been influenced by Norse / Germanic / Nordic languages a lot, and the Norse languages are one of the prettiest artistic creations of all time, as the räider dude that created Norse had true artistic talent and created a real work of art, and the languages that come mostly from Norse and that have been influenced by Norse the most like English and Icelandic and Dutch and Faroese and Danish and Norwegian and Welsh are as gorgeous as Norse, and they are the prettiest languages ever, and the other languages that have been influenced by Norse / Germanic languages a lot are also pretty, which explains why Latvian and Slovene are pretty and refined with mostly pretty words!

Ugunskrusts is very very ancient symbol / charm of protection. Even today it is used by Turkic, Mongolic, Tunguzic shamans. Līgo celebrations is equivalent of Turkic Sakha / Yakut peoples Ykyahk ( Isyakh / Isiyakh ) which again this is with its farsi name Nevruz celebrated by Turkic countries as spring celebration ( welcoming the spring ) Difference with the time of the year of this celebration is because it is celebrated depends on how nature brings the spring/summer. It is almost same time frame in Latvia and Sakha/ Yakutia and Central Asia, West Asia celebrates earlier as spring/summer comes earlier. That is a nice, great proof of ancestral beliefs originated purely from nature. Ziemas Svetki is thought to be christmas celebration which is not if anyone thinking they are celebrating christmas, it is actually celebration of the day to longer day from longest night around 23-24th December is also Turkic Altai celebration Kün Janyrgan ( Gün Yanırgan / Yeni Gün / New Day ) the difference in Altai is Turkic people plant a tree and pray for the spirits to reach as to show appreciation to the nature where Latvians drag a dry piece of wood with a rope on the snow, maybe knock on the doors of people then altogether drag it in to a space and burn it to get rid off last years bad spirits and do the shamanic prays/dances. Greetings from Oghuz descendant Turkish. May the blessings of the Eternal Blue Sky be up on you. 🙏

It doesn't exist in standard Latvian anymore, but still can be heard in some dialects and local variants. Actually, many Latvians can't even pronounce it properly anymore because you just don't hear it on a day to day basis.

It is interesting that although Balts are very close to Slavs - and when I was in Lithuania and Latvia, I found both languages faintly familiar - but the distinctions can be quite hard to cope with. Numerals, for example, are pretty close. Roots of the many words, too - I started catch them in the course of several days. A week later, I was able to know about what the communication is going on. It is like with german language - I am living at the Slovak/Austria border and although I never learned German I am somewhat able to know what they are talking about, decipher information tables, etc. because we were for example watching children programs in austrian TV etc. And for sure it is way more distant than baltic languages. On the other side, all Slavic languages are almost completely intelligible for me. Still I would like to know how you were communicating during Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth era :D Polish is pretty close to Slovak (for example even in 13th century the differences were at the level of dialect) but when I first time heard Lithuanian I was initially completely lost :D

tulenik71 hi! Thanks for your comment. Hmm an interesting question about communication in the 13th century. There were a lot of people to communicate with - Swedes, Lithuanian, Slavic, Polish, German.. and given how notoriously bad we are at languages. Maybe we just smiled and waved ;D

Yes. Those majoring in Eastern European studies had to at least have a reading knowledge of seven languages for their PhD--at least Stateside. The idea was to learn a North Slavic language and a South Slavic and from that you could pretty much get them all. I got my reading knowledge of French by knowing Latin. Even German is somewhat discernible to English speaker. Interestingly, when I was taking Sanskrit was able pick up Baltic words, for example "tvanis" in Latvian (and the title of a play) and "dvanis" in Sanskrit means "noxious fumes," or even Himalaya, is similar to "Ziema Majala," or "house of snow/winter." Indo-European languages are fascinating and Latvian is old, too,

@@katherinelawrence3032 here in Slovakia, we are able to talk with any other Slavs. It is like we are "somewhere in the middle of the language family". Most distant is Bulgarian [it is South Slavic but with many Proto-Slavic features, like really strange case system, which can be somewhat easier for - for example - English speaking people using prepositions (similarly than Bulgarian) to indicate case instead of Slavic suffixes]. So be warned, Bulgarian/Macedonian is pretty different from Serbo-Croatian and Slovenian. And what is interesting, although Serbo-Croatian is technically the same language, I usually better understand Croatian speaker than Serbian. Maybe because of accent. Most of Slavs are able to learn other Slavic language really quickly, I have students from Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Ukraine and most of them are speaking at the native level in the course of several weeks or months. Some of eastern Slavs retain their strong accent but it is quite "local" - I know a woman from Moscow living here for 50+ years and she still has extremely strong, "singing" moscovian accent, rendering some words incerognisable, and oppositely, when I am speaking Russian they think I am from Stavropol region (I am ocassionally using H and local accent is quite "calm"). And yes, I know Latin (somewhat) and some traces of Spanish, and because of that I am able to read French and even somewhat catch Italian dialogues. With French, English is somewhat helpful, too (clearly there was a huge influence of Norman French in language shift from OE to modern English). What is interesting, I am able to read Old French better than most of Frenchmen :) they are usually unable to read Villon in original, for me it is not any problem (moreover, Villon is not so old Old French, he is in fact breaking point to modern French). What is crazy, in "romance" Romanian they have whole sentences perfectly Slavic (Old Russian I would say). Sometimes I catch whole sentence and following sentence is totally incomprehensible (but mostly I am somewhat able to know what they are talking about because of knowing Latin/Spanish/French).

Latvia has not as a rule been especially good about LGBT issues. Latvia likes to think of itself (with justification) that it is always has had a Western European mentality, or at least is progressive and western-leaning thinking. On LGBT, the Baltic States tend to atavistic and in reality are Russo-Soviet in their attitudes and negativity toward LGBT people. There are any number of unflattering terms in Latvian (to come out and say it, slurs) for LGBT. Even the rather tame, "saldais puisis" is not flattering nor meant to be and thus gay Latvians often remain rather closeted.

@@katherinelawrence3032 Which is unfortunate. We can only wait and see whether the general attitude will shift for a more tolerant mindset in the future or not. I'd love to visit Latvia with my boyfriend (I've been there once for a weekend and it was great - definitely want to go again) but I'm a bit afraid of the discrimination.
