This is a walk through video of how to fix a leaking distributor.
The same steps are similar through many engines but these steps are specific to 2jz-ge and 1jz with distributors. 2jz-gte has coil packs.

This video and the power steering pump video you made are perfect. I just picked up an SC 300 to restore and both of these are leaking on my car as well.

Javed Hamid thanks dude. Good luck your new 300. They are fun cars. I’m working slowly towards making mine a track car but that’s a long ways. Working on replacing all the arms and bushings on the rear subframe so that video is coming later on in the year. Let me know if you have hang questions.

@@HenryMontoya well recently my battery light came on, so far i ruled out the battery, serpentine belt my alternator seems to have sh*t the bed, i think it mightve had to do with oil from the distributor getting on it. But my main question to you is on the harmonic balancer (crank pulley) is it supposed to have ribs on it for the belt to ride? Because is pretty smooth, i wouldnt be surprised if thats the original balancer from 92. Sorry for the long ass paragraph

Excellent vid bro.. this o ring causes a lot of issues with 2jz, it ends up leaking oil right onto the alternator. 🥵🥵. I feel like i should just replace the whole gear set with the new o ring. Wish me luck

Thanks for putting together this video. I have just finished doing mine on an SZ supra. Took me about two hours all up, the only trouble that I really had was getting leverage on the 12mm bolt because of the wiring harness alongside the cam cover getting in the way, and I couldn't fit a socket behind the distributor.
@HenryMontoya
@HenryMontoya 5 жыл бұрын
I had a similar issue with the leverage. I ended up attached two wrenches(the 12mm and a random larger wrench) to increase the leverage. It’s a simple trick. Google wrench leverage trick and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

I understand marking the position of the rotor, but why does it matter if you mark the position of the mounting nut?

I have a 2000 GS300 (2jz-ge) and I don't have a distributor...maybe I have coil packs? I just bought it today so I haven't actually gotten to my check up yet, had to do some house work first, but maybe tomorrow after work. (edit) I have a big empty space where it would be, at first I just thought it was where a 2jz-gte's turbo would sit, cause I also have a 7M-gte and that's roughly where the turbo is. It never occurred to me there might have been a distributor there.

Dam its hard to see what u mark on the distributor with the silver sharpy for the timing .my car has been dieing on me when i get to stop or at red light do think tjats a symptom of a distributor going bad
@edbo10
@edbo10 3 жыл бұрын
best practice is to get a timing light, if your 1jz/2jz has OBD1, start the engine then get a paperclip and jump the TE1 and E1 pins in the diagnostic connector port, this makes the engine stay at 1000 rpm to allow for timing adjustments. Stock toyota timing is 10 degrees BTDC If the rpm/idle goes rough when you slow down in gear that might be a symptom of something with the dizzy, you may need to jump the TE1 and E1 pins and set the ignition to on and see what code it gives you. It's a possibility because that's exactly what happened to my V6 camry - the idle was getting pretty rough, and slowing down quickly (not slam your brakes quickly, but quicker than a granny driver for sure) would cause the engine to run at 500 rpm roughly before the idle rpm speed stabilised to its usual 750. Occasionally the engine would also have trouble starting up in that the engine would crank, but the spark plugs seemed to be on the cusp of fully igniting, almost like the vehicle equivalent of edging lol. Two weeks ago I decided to take off the dizzy cap and about 1/4 cup of oil came out...now I'm just waiting on new parts to arrive as according to the factory manual, the gaps between the two rotor pickup sensors are actually too wide. But cleaning the housing, rotor and cap of the oil made it run significantly better in the meantime.

I have a 1gfe engine however the distributor set up is similar to yours down to the cap. I'm planning on doing this to my car too but question, when you go to set up back, do you rotate the rotor a few degrees from where you marked it? Knew once you put it in the head it would shift
@HenryMontoya
@HenryMontoya 4 жыл бұрын
Kastro 876 yes exactly. If you’re rotating it clockwise to reinstall, you want to make sure you’re alittle counter clockwise so once you’re installing, it can rotate clockwise and meet your mark.

Kastro 876 I can’t remember if they sell genuine anymore. This kit is from Napa and I actually had the same problem when trying to rebuild it. Where did you get your kit from? I had a leak even after two rebuilds and right away just bought a new pump because it was my daily at the time.

Do you know if the O-rings will fit 1JZ-GE? My distributor is leaking as well
@HenryMontoya
@HenryMontoya 4 жыл бұрын
tonilujano I believe so. When I removed the one in the video, the part number plaque had “1jz” written on it. So I’m assuming it was swapped from a 1jz. If you want to be very sure , look up the part number for both platforms. See if the part number for the distributor are different for 1jz vs 2jz. Also look up the part number for the orings on both engines. If they match, then you are correct

Got it brotha man. I used 2jz distributor seals and it worked. The entire 2jz distributor also works on 1jzs. I also used 2jz cam seals, front main seal, and front water pump.
