I have said it before and I will say it again. Ice, ice baby. My simple old cryo cuff and bucket made all the difference! 2 TKRs. The ice numbs the pain. As always, great info, guys!

Hip replacement here. One goof - I felt so good that I was back up and working on my computer almost immediately, and sitting too long can cause blood to pool in your lower extremities. Though I did move around and go for short walks, I'd suggest keeping your sitting times short. Positives - ice. They suggested we look at an ice machine that circulates cold water on your leg. I didn't use one but people rave about how good they are. Ice packs are ok but fiddly. Walk around. If you haven't had the surgery yet, you might be surprised at how soon you can walk around. If you need a walker, that's ok. Walking is good on so many levels, heart, lungs, blood to healing site, muscle tone, lymph... Good info Docs - thanks.

Good info, as always. I only had a minimal amount of swelling after my hip replacements in 2023. I kept ice packs on my hips 24/7 for two weeks, along with compression socks for two weeks. Hip surgeries were done three months apart. I attribute my good recovery to the ice and socks, along with mild exercise. (walking and exercises my PT gave me to do at home) I did/do have some weirdness in my legs/feet though. Like splotches along the insides of my feet, which went away in a couple weeks. Then I had bright redness on the inside of my left knee about 15 months after surgery, and a puffy little bump on that knee. The redness morphed into darker splotches which are still there, but not real dark, just not the bright redness anymore. Bump is a little smaller. I also got small bumps on the top of each ankle, which are still there. All of these bumps are soft and feel like water bumps. None of this is bothersome and seem to slowly improve, so I'm just keeping an eye on all of it. Any comments/advice?

I worked long hours on patrol. 12 even 15 hour days were not unusual. The last 5 or so years I began wearing below the knee compression socks. Helped a lot and was more comfortable.

I learned my lesson with swelling after my hip replacement, ended up in the ER for a ultrasound to make sure I didn't have a clot and the nurse gave me a sock...later when I had my knee replaced I started with a compression sock the next day after surgery and didn't have any issues. They are a PITA to put on but totally worth the temporary pain. Of course ice is simply your friend as well. Get up with your walker and into PT as soon as you can post surgery!!! "Looking forward" to getting the other knee done early next year...well, maybe not so much! Thanks guys!

I've never had a hip or knee replacement but I did have lymph node discetion of my left groin and upper thigh... Boy did my leg swell. I wore a total leg stocking for over 6 months. The truck is turn it inside out and slide in your toes, scrunch up the rest in both hands, pulling apart and up over your leg. Yeah, exercise was a huge help to keep the fluid moving.

Was the rehabilitation very panful? I am asking because my wife will be getting her knees replaced in a few months.

@@louisd95714I just had my knee replaced 7 weeks ago. She will have swelling and bruising right after just keep her compression socks on and if you can get the polar ice machine definitely take the surgical team up on that regular ice packs don’t do the trick. She will have some numbing around the knee cap and her leg will be sensitive from nerve pain for a little bit. The compression stocking helped me with the nerve pain. Ive been up and moving since I came out of recovery and my PT started the day after with home health for two weeks then out patient. PT is going to be slow going at first but as time goes by it gets easier. You have good and bad days in PT at first. But once the ROM improves then you have more good days. Hope that helps. Best of Luck to her.

@@louisd95714 Hip here, knees are more difficult than hips but here's my 2 cents... The rehab is so important that the Ortho people where my surgery was done tell people "take the pain meds" which may or may not involve opioids. Getting the joint moving is so important to regaining full use, and strength - though they don't want you suffering. Everyone is different but there will be discomfort. For me, being now pain free and no longer hobbling along like before is really great. Tell her to hang in there, and best wishes.

I also got instructed not to wear the compression sock on my operated leg for concern of seepage from the wound. Further, I got told to use both crutches for the first couple of weeks so that my brain could adjust to having both legs the same length again and keep my gait normal. There was a 4cm difference. 😮

After my hip replacement elevating my legs with ice and compression socks seemed to really help the swelling. As the swelling went down so did the achy pain (plus exercises and short walks).

Good morning doctors, thank you for sharing all your wisdom. Could you please inform your followers about NAC? From what I have heard, the FDA in the USA is going to introduce a law that it can only be sold with a prescription. Thank you for your response.

I'm happy it was mentioned cryotherapy with compression gave some results not cryotherapy or cold therapy alone. Cryotherapy alone doesn't have good evidence for reducing swelling. It reduces pain by numbing effect no doubt but for swelling? It would instead cause 'stasis' because of it's vasoconstrictive effect keeping all the fluid in the area instead of allowing it circulate out. Compression, effleurage, gravity assisted drainage as well as exercise would be my go-to s if I were to choose.

After my hip replacement the swelling started in my thigh, moved over the days to my knee, then my calf, and onto my foot. I'm waiting for my toenails to pop off and all the lymphatic fluid to spray out like a garden sprinkler. 😂

What about blood clots? Is there anything you can do or eat to treat blood clots in leg and swelling?

I am sure that this is all true! Based on the experience of several members of my family, including my mother, swollen legs are due to various heart problems! No socks can help if the problem is related to the heart because swollen legs are excess fluid which is dangerous! My mother was given a high dose of furosemide in the hospital, a medicine for urination, and she peed several gallons of water! Now at home, she uses 60 mg furosemide once a day and urinates regularly! The legs are no longer swollen and the breathing is better! Only those who use furosemide must not eat anything salty for a few hours before or after! Dr said that my mother's limit is 2000mg sodium per day

I had both knees done at the same time. Both legs were swollen from knees to ankles. Blood vessels broken. Get swollen still if I’m in them a lot. Been 16 yrs on both. The right knee was just redone again a year ago.

Just got back from having a ultrasound, Doctor ordered. Right knee replacement 2 weeks ago. I had a problem with red calf, swelling and pain. Doctor wasn’t sure if it was blood clot or normal. Clot now ruled out but he’s treating for a skin infection. I’ve been icing like crazy with ice machine. He thinks it’s just from all the swelling. I’m wondering if compression socks will do anything.

No, I had my femur broken two years ago. I’ll be three years January 9 next year sometimes I’m back in my leg or inside my leg. It gets real warm and that it feels like a big rubber band around it. I use a compression sock given to me from the the home nurse I would come over and change the bandage for me and my femur bone. He would give me compression sock but after a couple weeks, I’m worried that it goes back to the swelling again then what?

It took me years for the swelling to go down, and some of it is still there. Could this be related to that side having been affected by my stroke, and then my hip fracture, on top of Osteogenesis Imperfecta? Man, my bones are weird….
