I REALLY hope you do more interviews like this. Not only is it fascinating; you're a really good interviewer as well (you asked good questions and gave Haskett plenty of room to speak for himself and elaborate). I love seeing these people who are typically buried in the credits finally get some recognition and share their stories. And I think its a good thing to highlight how many Black artists were involved in these shows that we never knew about because they quietly worked behind the scenes

I need to call myself an "ex-child" from now on. When I was trying to truly grasp on what Haskett meant about something lacking nowadays, I kept thinking about no matter how creative the art or style is nowadays, sometimes it just feels like "this could be just live action". Like it doesn't take advantage of being animated. Also, I reckon if you are able to get feedback like "you're crazy" these days, that could be considered a huge complement lol
@Miglohara2 жыл бұрын
Haskett can probably be credited for having spawned the modern furry community when ya think about it. Homie was the main character designer for Tiny Toons AND Animaniacs, and he's been working on Looney Tunes projects since the '70s. Think he's among the best artists still working in the industry so I'm so happy you decided to interview him!

29:28 I'm so glad he brought this up cause I feel like this is definitely something that happened around the early 2010s & late 2000s with both animation and video games. Where the attempted to make things look more realistic and behave as such made things looks superfluous and stiff at times and edging on the uncanny valley at worst
@pheunithpsychic-watertype98812 жыл бұрын
I said the same thing on a spongebob video review. It's the main reason I 99 percent prefer anime now because they embrace the mediums ability to go over the top even when the genre is something as down to earth as slice of life, that remaining 1 percent is youtuber animations.

I'm so glad he talked about how he feels the industry squashes the potential of the artform of animation, and how there are inumerable styles and potentials that have still never been tackled. Especially agree that this pigeonholing of big budget American animation to just trying to replicate realism/live action misses the breath of expression and stories animation can convey. Animators don't get enough of a spotlight to talk about their craft and histories. Looking forward to more!

Has no idea he animated on The Chipmunk Adventure, peak chipmunk designs. As for how animation has changed today, I believe Craig Bartlett, creator of Hey Arnold said that back in the 90s projects were being greenlit a lot. That was a time of experimenting on TV. Today it's all about money, things are getting harder and harder to gremlin, studios seem to be afraid to take the same chances they did back then. Now, were a lot of these shows great, and lasted ing, probably not, but it seemed like they had a chance of being shown to a pitch meeting.

Not only does he seem to consider his words, but he also, while having concern for the industry and its directions, seems to keep up pretty well with technology and understand how things actually are working. Tariq is also great in this, he's great at asking followups and knows when to lay out and just listen. Looking forward to more of these!

Sincerely, thank you for doing this. I really want to know what specific foreign Art movements or posters he'd want to see animated. I agree with him that some intentional design elements get lost in 3d animation. Especially, when everything has to be perfectly rendered for a constantly moving camera. No shade to 3D animation. It's probably more of a reflection of what the industry thinks is profitable than a failing of the medium. Sometimes, I just think there is too much visual noise in some animated movies. Visually overstimulating sometimes. I dunno, I do not usually comment on videos ...and now I'm rambling....but since I'm here I just want to say, thank u for doing this interview and I REALLY appreciate hearing other black people talk about animation so thank u for what u do.
