Great review on both these units, thank you !!! Subscribed just based on these two reviews but to those looking at this laptop be very careful and check out the Lenovo company forums. The X1 Gen2 has a TON of screen and keyboard problems, There is a 20+ page thread on just the keyboard problem alone that has gone on for months and lenovo is offering no solutions at all. I am sure the review sample they are sending out are just fine but to those buying them in the stores or on lenovo's website should be VERY CAREFUL. Also check out how many refurbed units lenovo has for sale, people are sending these things back in droves.

Hi Marc! Just the comparison I was waiting for. The only thing you do not mention in your video is reflections on the OLED screen. I am a developer writing lots of code and I have ordered a P1 with the IPS display to avoid reflections, although I prefer the OLED due to the grear blacks, great colors and touch capability. I would really appreciate your comment on the OLED reflections, so I could change my order if it's not a problem. Thanks and happy new year!

Thanks for the comparison! In my opinion the touch function is nice but actually redundant because it is not a fully convertible screen. How about the oled screen in detail: do you recognize a mesh on the screen. This is the touch layer actually. I worry it would disturb me when doing image and video editing. Unfortunately there is no option to configure a thinkpad with a 4k IPS display. Makes me upset somehow....

The X1 Extreme is a good device. The more I see from OLED, the more I think a company needs to come out with a 1080p OLED panel because these 4K OLED battery results have been disappointing. I get that for workstation and desktop replacements, there is an expectation they are supposed to be plugged up. BUT, there is a demand for portable devices that last. Good review.
@fzst-ub5xf4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I was thinking that too. I have a dell xps 15 oled. When I choose the 1080p resolution, text is still pretty crisp thanks to the great contrast. Surprisingly, it still looks sharper than the 1080p matte display on my 13 inch lenovo ultrabook. Contrast really helps you to perceive text better. Sure 4k looks even better, maybe a 2k-screen would be the sweetspot? BTW: I get quite decent battery life out of mine. Around 7-8 hours with light productivity - which is enough for my needs.

Thank you! I’ve been dying for reviews of the OLED version of the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme. Excellent review - first one I’ve seen. Which do you recommend between the Dell XPS 15 with the 4K touchscreen option or the Thinkpad X1 Extreme with the OLED? Do you recommend waiting until the 10th gen H-series processors are released this summer? I’ve heard rumors of an eight-core i7 and ten-core i9. I’m hoping Dell will redesign the XPS or Lenovo will give the Extreme a larger battery. The MacBook Pro may get microLED, which would be outstanding. I’m really excited for next year of tech.

Question: I had a 2014 MacBook Pro Retina that de-soldered itself, as they're prone to do. It was my first glossy screen computer, bought used last year, and I didn't like it: too many reflections, too much eyestrain. I'm replacing it, not repairing it, so I'm asking if anyone can compare the OLED display in that regard. Photo editing and printing is my most demanding use and I'm not a gamer. Ergonomically, I'm not really keen on touch on a clamshell laptop. Since the touch circuitry is always active, that's delivering a significant hit to battery life: it's not just OLED. But battery life isn't a major issue for me so I could put up with it. I'm considering the P53 since maximum portability isn't a concern, it has a number pad, is more expandable, should cool better, and comes in a hair less expensive right now. But thin & light is nice, too.

Guys, be careful. Don't buy this product. You will be disappointed like me :(. The OLED has a huge problem with display and missing keystrokes. X1 gen 2 and P1 gen 2 have the very same issues. The touch layer on top of OLED is designed wrongly (a thrid-party touch) resulting in a bad experience of the OLED screen (from Samsung). You can see all over the screen small dots. Lenovo still doesn't recognize this as an issue. So, when you call support, you get nothing. The specs are the same as dell XPS 15. There is a reason why Dell doesn't offer any touch version with the OLED screen. So go for that or for mac pro 16 as the price range are similar on all these. AND please check Lenovo forums for known issues first before buying this product.

@Andrew Marc David I'm shocked with that 4h battery life and I think you should've mention the following in your video: you've done a great job showing two graphics related to battery life, where in the first one both DELL and HP had significantly better brightness (between 441 and 485) which is normally the culprit of poor battery life on most laptops, where the Lenovo had only 368! Next, on the second chart you see the logical result: DELL with lower brightness 441 had better battery life than the HP - 8:14, which has 21% bigger battery but 50% more battery life! All 4k OLED laptops on the market uses the same OLED display from Samsung, so there is no excuse! There is much more for you to investigate - please ask your contact in Lenovo for reason and whether they are going to fix it later via software/firmware?

@@andrewmarcdavid Thanks! Another thing, if you still have the opportunity to compare Lenovo with DELL/HP OLED laptops is whether the laptop uses NVIDIA card for browsing web while the laptop is in battery mode or it automatically shuts it down and use only the build-in Intel GPU in the browser. That could be the reason for the poor results - the battery consumption looks similar to what I would expect from this laptop with light gaming, not browsing!
@fzst-ub5xf4 жыл бұрын
@@JulianBG As far as I read: yes it does. At least I know, that the lenovo uses the nvidia card for the video outputs if you connect it to an external display, whereas the dell xps usses internal graphics for all display-duties. I dont't know if that means that it uses the 1060 for the internal display too though- or maybe you could switch it like in some dell precision models? Idk
@JulianBG4 жыл бұрын
@@fzst-ub5xf In that case it is interesting to see what Dell and HP are doing in the same situation. I would expect in battery mode (no external connection to monitor) to use Intel GPU by default. Probably some applications will need explicit access to NVidia GPU (like video editing software). However, I see no way with NVidia GPU turned on, any laptop on the market to manage to get 8h battery life.

Don't believe the hype. I've used my X1 gen 2 for about 3 weeks now and I can honestly say I am extremely disappointed. Quality control is extremely low at the manufacturing and assembly level. Keyboard is extremely stiff and uncomfortable with a very matt sandy feel to them. Fingers will get very tired after long hours of typing. Occasionally you will experience missing key strokes. Backlight not uniform with some keys pushed in, not completely leveled with the rest of the keys. P53 and E-series keys are far better than the X1's. Severe thermal throttling on the i9-9880h cpu, you are better off getting the i7 processor, but even then you'll probably still end up not fully utilization that processor's max potential. Battery life is abysmal. People that review these laptops on youtube only use them for a couple of days. Fresh windows 10 install, including all updated drivers and most recent bios firmware, at 70% screen brightness, hybrid graphics card mode, CPU core & cash undervolted at -0.135V, HDR mode turned off, with office use and browsing you get at most 4 hours. With dedicated graphics enabled you only get 2 hours. This is a joke for a CAN $4,000 laptop. Not to mention a lot of stuttering, laggy, sluggish youtube streams using the igpu. Even when hardware acceleration disabled, HDR disabled, and windows video processing enhancement disabled, you still experience stuttering at 1080p and 4k. Tried to switch out my ssd, but the m.2 screw was so tightly screwed in, I literally stripped the screw and can't even swap out the ssd. Lenovo Vantage doesn't even work at times, software gets stuck and you need to restart the laptop. Supposedly vantage improves battery life, but that obviously wasn't the case. In addition, fan was making grinding noises. The only good thing about the X1 is the oled panel. It was stunning to look at, every thing is crystal clear on that panel, just wished that the rest of the components were just as good. Oh yeah, finger print reader and facial recognition always worked correctly. I don't understand how lenovo rates these laptops at 14 hours battery life. Maybe their test laptops are in sleep mode when they calculate the battery life hours.
