this but specifically in the way that i didn't understand why they did the scene like that until the 'nostalgia' explanation. like i read the book when it first came out (granted i was roughly about 14 or something but still) and i really liked the overall theme that this first challenge had. spoilers i guess but in the novel the challenge is set to be accessible to the extreme, which nicely ties in to the maker guy's whole narrative of 'anyone can become the winner'. it's set up on the first planet players go to, and albeit pretty well hidden, all you need to win is gaming skills. in contrast, the movie scene heavily focuses on its theme of nostalgia, which could be cool i guess, had it been executed better. like driving backwards? that's the solution? really? and the way the guy finds out is literally just by being completely obsessed with the maker. no skills needed whatsoever. i don't think that was wholly intentional but it sure is hilarious that they made a movie about a sorta okay book and completely butchered its message from beginning to end. (ofc as i said i was much younger when i read this so i barely remember the things in it, but i do still think that the idea of this first challenge was actually pretty cool. another thing i recall from the book was that there was a whole arc built around the guy dropping quite a few pounds in order to become 'good enough' for his love interest. that's a whole another discussion though but i do find it funny that this fictional dude and the author both agree that fat people are undesirable.. haha. although in my opinion it would have been just as good had he dropped his 'nice guy' narrative. that never happened though, unfortunately.)

Imo it’s pretty close to those sci-fi fantasies, but it’s not financially viable to get it the rest of the way. VRChat and Neos VR are almost completely player-built for free with no profit. While we want to create experiences that match our immersive sci-fi fantasies, it’s very difficult to do and there’s no financial incentives for it. Meanwhile the actual companies that can afford it, like Meta/Facebook, aren’t interested. Maybe someday

I got a PSVR as a form of escapism. There was a definite wow factor. Even with low quality visuals the tracking was spot on and in something like Pistol Whip or Astrobot there was a childlike wonder about it. The wonder wears off, the setup and weather hinders the experience. No one wants a headset strapped on in the middle of summer. It's a shame.. because 90's kids would kill for what we have now and sometimes that mindset is the only thing that makes it worth it.

I got my first VR headset (Quest 2) as an early Christmas present and I’ve been using it almost every day. However as summer started, and each day gets hotter, I’m dreading using it. Feels weird having a piece of hardware that you can only comfortable use in half of the year at best…

I finally got a VR set a few weeks ago after wanting to try it for years and it’s definitely cool, but it’s not as cool as I was expecting. There’s a bit of a black rim around the outside because our eyes can see a bigger degree than the screen covers so it still feels like you’re watching something on a screen and not like it’s actually in front of you. I wear glasses and when I first got them I hated wearing them because it felt like I was watching everything on a screen because of the rim around the glasses, I felt disconnected from reality. VR goggles feel exactly the same. Usually I’m really scared of heights and get motion sickness really easily but I wasn’t scared of heights at all on VR and I felt nothing when I did the rollercoaster VR experience. I’m definitely enjoying it but it’s still definitely not like in the movies. It very much feels like I am just watching something on a screen and I’m not actually there.
