Yes! Feel the feels! Do not numb those feelings and emotions. I try to not stress out or feel anxiety about social events or meals with friends. I look at it as an opportunity. An opportunity to not focus on food... an opportunity to make great memories, conversations, etc. Every event gets a little easier to not worry about what others are thinking about me or what's on my plate, or what I'm eating or not eating.

I have so many friends who are those people who can moderate food and they are skinny and they cannot understand why I cannot moderate food it’s a constant battle. Also, this month has been one of the most challenging months in my entire life. It seems like all things that could go wrong have gone wrong. Your talk this morning reminded me that I can and will overcome all this with God’s help (and carnivore!).

Love that metaphor - yes! Yes! My default with emotions is ..."HOT POTATO -HOT POTATO!".... and I RUN/FLIGHT to fix, avoid, numb, punish ... YES, practice acknowledging, identifying, accepting the emotion and find the OK parts ... Love this ... And practice in neutral non triggered moments to change that default. ❤ Oh gosh, this set me free today Kelly!

Excellent teaching ... What I have seen in the Christian circle of friends....instead of identifying, acknowledging, accepting, processing etc emotions...we 'spiritual bypass' ignore, stuff avoid the feelings...'in the name of Jesus,' thinking we're being Christ like when we're not 'Being' like Him at all - we are denying the true essence of our very human experience. He often went away and prayed, I'm certain that very human part of Jesus, like us in all ways, did what you taught today. Heart❤

I identified with the stuffing of negative emotions. I discovered the Psalms after my full term baby died. (43 years ago). David had emotions! My negative emotions were allowed-(not sinful). David expressed his emotions to God and we can, too! God is our comforter and redeemer. We can run to Him and be safe in His strong tower.

I'm a huge emotional eater and also a binge eater. I eat when I'm happy, sad, stressed out, depressed, angry...you name it I turned to food. I've learned I have to completely abstain from any trigger foods because I'll binge. I'm single and introverted, but I have dogs and cats so now if I'm in my emotions I either snuggle one of them or we play. I've also found that consistent exercise helps keep me out of my own head. I'm more keto/carnivore so I'll enjoy a Keto Chow shake or two pieces of Lindt 78% dark chocolate which isn't even a serving. Years ago I would've eaten that whole chocolate bar in a sitting. Even berries are way too sweet for me now that my teeth hurt if I eat them more than a few days. Emotional eating is so hard to break and I sympathize with everyone that struggles! It's a literal drug. ❤

Yes this year and last there has been a 6x increase. Why? Because I quit alcohol and sugar….now it’s starting to chill out and it’s not as intense because I’ve been working THROUGH past wounds and current stressors for the first time in my life. It takes time, lots of time but I’m finally recently getting to the other side, a point where I can just ride the stress events, deal with things however O can and then move on. It feels so weird…I feel so sad for my past self not understanding why I couldn’t get the through life like everyone else.

After practicing the exercise of saying to myself "i recognize" throughout the day, I've been able to stay in my prefrontal cortex and not let the limbic brain take over when I'm feeling a binge coming on and also has been helping me not act on my emtions. Filling in the sentence helps me hold onto the potato and not be scared if it. Try it throughout the day! "I recognize that i am driving, i recognize that i am feeling frustrated. I recognize that i am creating a narrative. " If anyone is curious, i learned this from the binge eating therapist Sarah on YT. Kelly, you are spot on! I find it funny that your recent content aligns with a lot of the useful information i have found on her channel. I am so happy that you are willing to address this issue. Sister, you are at the very least a very entertaining woman! God has blessed you with intelligence and the gift of the gab! Intense emotions are de rigeur for most of us who feel deeply and internalise pain and suffering. That icecream is good! I’m fully carnivore, too, so a cry, a lie down, reading Psalms, and sitting outside in my big garden or going on a prayer walk and talk with God helps me a lot. Also, releasing the spirit of being upset to God works wonders. Oh, and write, because journalling is a life saver! 💟✝️📖🙏🇦🇺

Totally agree that the diversion tactics didn’t work when eating the SAD. It wasn’t until I got off all sugar that they worked. When I have feelings and I’m walking to the frig for a non-hunger reason, instead I take a few minutes and sit at my sewing machine. I get stitches done on whatever project I’ve got going. Much safer than putting something in my mouth that I don’t need.

I went off the rails when I lost my 16 yo lab in January. Didn't go too crazy, fortunately, but enough to stall things out and start feeling the ill effects. Tears still come some days but more often than not, my memories of her have become sweet again rather than sinking me. Fighting my way back now, but what a humbling experience it's been. I took for granted how "easy" it was to stay out of trouble until it wasn't.

You can find an emotion wheel online that lists many different emotions. You can look at the different emotions to accurately find the correct one, you might think you are angry for example but then when you look at the emotion wheel you might find that actually ‘frustrated’ or ‘disappointed’ fits better. It can also work with good emotions too, you may say I’m happy but then see ‘elated’ or ‘passionate’ and they might resonate better. You then need to say it out loud as your brain reacts differently to external speech than internal. So say out loud ‘I feel betrayed’ or ‘I am so disappointed’ Once you vocalise and hear the emotions, your brain can then better sort and problem solve. If you are happy and passionate and joyful, say those out loud too 😊

I agree with you on the first things (self-care). Doing other things to distract from the feelings only keeps the feelings alive in mind somewhere and reinforces the idea that something external, such as food or taking a shower, makes us feel better. Our feelings come from our thoughts about whatever is happening, NOT from what seems to be happening. That’s why two people can have two polar opposite responses to the same event. In any event, the ONLY way out is through. We’ve got to feel the feelings so we eventually realize they can’t harm us and that they mean nothing. I mean, I’ve definitely felt so sad before and had the thought about getting stuck in the sadness. It feels scary at first, especially for someone who’s so used to stuffing feelings. There’s a book out there called “The Sedona Method,” which I love. It teaches to welcome whatever seems to come our way and to release it. With what we call habits or addictions, assuming we’re not doing other things, it does suggest giving yourself permission to eat (or whatever) once you’ve felt the feelings, assuming you still want to eat. If you don’t, then don’t eat. The reason the book does this is because, once you’ve felt the feelings and welcomed the thoughts and beliefs, too, eventually the behavior drops away. The habit or addictive part comes in when we keep reacting by eating food over and over again without feeling the feelings. Once you break the pattern, many people experience the habit and even an “addiction” dropping away. Of course, it also means we have to look at our beliefs about addiction and the supposed physical causes, etc.

As a recovering emotional eater of 30+ years, I thank you for being a voice of LOGIC in a world we are being so conditioned to react to every emotion. That's how all the addiction money makers make their money. Quick fix and keeping our minds on our self-centered emotions. We were not designed to be "me's", we were designed to be "we's". With that not everything is attacking us personally. Step away from social media before ya step towards that bag of chips or sweet indulgence for a quick fix. Clear out your mind before you clear out your fridge. ❤🙏

I have trouble abstaining completely. Every couple of weeks I plan in my head a binge event where i pick and choose cakes, chocolate bars and other ultra sugary things that I will binge on until I have no desire to stuff myself full of these anymore. Then i execute this plan without fail. The thing for me is, after a binge I don't really crave sugary treats anymore. I also don't ever snack nor do I plan these events in the middle of the week but always on the weekend. So when I have this type of non-food I go ham and i make it count. What I still have trouble with is completely ditching them. I am now 4 weeks in completely strict (11 months in total) but my mind is going crazy. It's not like I'm overweight, I haven't started this diet because of weight issues but it gnaws on me mentally causing all this guilt and making me forget how it feels to be on a clean diet on the blink of an eye. The problem is also the consequences of me doing this aren't too big physically apart from feeling a little low energy the day on the binge and maybe the day after. This reinforces the idea that it's okay to do it. Anyone also having binge eating problems but staying carnivore mostly? The thing is I love carnivore food. But I also love milk chocolate. This is like the best of both worlds. Should I give it up?

I've been in flight/fight for over 40 years. Carnivore hasn't changed that yet. Adding that to emotional/stress eating and you get an anxiety filled mess. I've only been Carnivore since last June and last month my husband had a heart attack and bypass surgery. I gained 15 lbs in the 2 weeks I was in the hospital with him. I didn't overeat(surprisingly and thankfully) but the food options were only geared towards comfort, not health. I went to my old standby, word search puzzles and they helped me with my brain but I still struggled and stressed. We've been home three weeks now and we're back on Carnivore but I'm still struggling because the emotions & stress aren't over yet. This video is very timely for me 😊

I needed this today. I was doing so well for about a week on lowcarb and darn it if the stupid loaf of white bread wasn’t tormenting me and I made a grilled cheese sandwich! My roommate doesn’t eat the way I want to. I think I’m going to have to tell him that the bread can’t come into the house for awhile. He usually agrees with that. Note, the stress I’m dealing with is I have stage 4 ovarian/uterine cancer with metastasis to my lungs & abdomen (been battling 2 years), my Mother is at end stage lung cancer 😭, my Dad is in a rehab he has Parkinson’s and is healing from brain hematomas from falling so many times and my roommate is battling throat cancer. I’ve turned to Little Debbie and the frozen, cold sweet stuff WAY too often during the past 2 years but honestly I’m overwhelmed! Ahhh! I’m trying to eat well to keep myself as healthy as possible because even though I’m not curable it keeps my edema down, blood sugar down, etc. P.S. It wasn’t even GOOD bread. It was the cheapest of the cheap.🥴

We don’t need to keep going over it in our hearts and minds…yes, we tend to go over and over it…how the situation should gone…it tears us up! Jesus came to forgive us, help us thru the pain, take it from us and leave it with Him! Thank you Kelly!

Great advice. Similar to what I’ve heard the crappy childhood fairy on KZbin recommended. Ya gotta acknowledge and feel those feelings, and not try and ignore or suppress them.

Kelly, I truly believe that my emotions are the core of why I binge eat. I've never known how to deal with them and I don't have anyone I fully trust in my life. This video is a Godsend and I'll watch it over and over again to help me break this cycle. I'll see you on Mondays in May (and beyond) for coaching.

This video was super helpful! I want to get to a place where I'm not emotionally eating, even animal products. I want to be able to find other ways to process what I'm feeling without turning to food. Also, I listened to it while walking on my treadmill and getting my steps in!

Oh, the universe provides!!! I am 6 days in, and I had a really stressful day yesterday. I made some non carnivore decisions. I was totally aware of it, and this morning, I can feel all the differences. It's a blessing for me to have this lesson, and then the universe sends me this video exactly at the right time. Thanks for your content!

Kelly, thank you so much for condensing really good approaches in your inimitably warm, cheerful friendly and persuasive style. I'm a therapist and love what you do. Even though I love helping people in therapy, I'm far from an evangelist and believe that it's not right for everyone (though it can really help when needed!). If someone wants a further guide to emotion management pertaining to setting down excessive eating as a (maladaptive) coping mechanism, I very highly recommend this book: The DBT Solution for Emotional Eating, by Debra L. Safer, Sarah Adler and Philip Masson. A related approach can be found in Judith Beck's The Beck Diet Solution. Dr. Beck is the daughter of one of the great genius psychologists/psychiatrists of the 20th century, the late Dr. Aaron Beck, and an amazing therapist and teacher in her own right. Thanks for all you do to promote empowerment and health.

Wow what an amazing video. As I am dealing with someone like that as speak. This has helped me so much in how to deal with it. I have restarted carnivore a few weeks ago after I fell off my own wagon 🤣😆 and this time I have a plan and have added 7+ miles a day to my daily walk. Thank you for all the advice and information, it speaks volumes of the person you and is very helpful. 🤗

I will be putting this video on repeat❤

Yes, all good advice, delivered in your inimitable style. Thanks, Kelly! But I wonder if anyone can offer up advice for dealing with a surge of emotions in a situation where you must stay, can’t take that walk or organize the junk drawer at that time, and maybe not until hours later. I am in this situation often and am honestly asking for some tips to get through without cramming the emotion down or blasting open.

I’m a Christian and what helps me with inescapable stressful situations may not help anyone else, but here’s what is helping me right now…. But first off I have to say that if I’m eating sugary food none of these things will cross my mind because I’ll be in the dark abyss. (And, oh Kelly! What a life-saving “missing puzzle piece” this video is! It confirmed what I realized recently, that FEELINGS CAN’T HURT ME. They are just a red flag to show me something’s not right and that I need to figure out the next wise step. THANK YOU!!!!) 1. Accept suffering & its purpose Accept suffering & its purpose In the “trigger” moment, recognize that Christians are promised peace and joy in the midst of tribulation, persecution, and suffering. We are not promised a pain-free existence, just the opposite. We are promised the opportunity to “share” the sufferings of Christ-misunderstandings, betrayal, harsh judgment, even our greatest acts of love and service being maligned and used against us-to experience a tiny taste of what He went through to secure our salvation, so that we can know Him better (Phil. 3:10). Therefore trials do not happen TO you but FOR you. It is by learning to rejoice in the Lord in the trial, especially in the midst of seemingly unbearable circumstances, that we learn to fight the good fight and see His power revealed in us. 2. Identify, confess, and repent of any expectations that are not from God, and any desires that are driving your unChristlike response. Jot them down in a pocket-size notebook.(Save this for later.) Examples (names represent personalities and positions) of what you might expect or wish: “That Cleopatra would cooperate” “That Hitler would be patient” “That Spock would be more romantic” “That Pokey Little Puppy would hurry up” “That Father Time wouldn’t rush me” In the moment, pray. Confess and forsake any expectation that is not from God. (Hint: This usually covers the list 😉 He expects humans to fail. See John 2, last verse, and John 3:16.) 3. Pray and ask God what you’re supposed to be learning. Maybe you’re learning to accept responsibility for your mistakes. Maybe you’re learning to have patience with the foibles of others. Maybe you’re learning not to be a doormat but to speak the truth in love. Maybe you’re learning to not be moved by another human’s rejection and judgment of you. 4. Strive constantly to root out bitterness. Doesn’t matter if it’s from childhood trauma or a thoughtless comment by your spouse or the “wrong way” something was handled at church or work. Unforgiveness will destroy you. Learn to let God be your defender and judge. And stop judging Him for what He allowed in your life, or staying mad at wicked people for being tools of the devil. Love God and people. Hate sin and the devil. If I sound passionate about this, it’s because of the backstory… and all of us have a backstory. A fantastic book (the audiobook is available free on the Libby app at my library so you might check there): Trusting God by Jerry Bridges God is loving, wise, and sovereign. He allows your circumstances for an eternal purpose that is good, and can even flip Satan on his head to use the sins of others to accomplish His own good designs for you, and show you things you won’t learn any other way. It’s hard to see it and believe it in the moment. But it’s true. So true. We never have to wonder if God really loves us if we will just spend some time at the foot of the Cross. Praying for you. 💝

I'm celebrating Passover now and I'm the cook! The baking, all the regular food for my family is done by me. I of course have my carnivore food but looking at all these desserts it's definitely triggering me and I've been having too much dairy so I don't cheat. It's not great on my tummy. I'm not usually triggered so much but because of all the homemade stuff, I feel like I'm making all this food I can't eat. Like if I decided to eat it I would be in tons of pain. But it keeps creeping up on me!
