It took me ages , I have six incisions from robotic surgery for total hysterectomy for cancer in January, I wasn't told about any pelvic floor exercises or scar tissue massage , but I have always had some discomfort, but since doing this it feels so much easier , thank you so much .

I asked my surgeon a few times, each visit ( private and expensive) and all i heard was time will heal and some discomfort might stay due to nerves beeing cut and scarring inside... I was told I dont need a pelvic floor therapy either. But I feel I need to. It's 3 months after abdominal hysterectomy and I feel pain, I can't wear normal clothes becaue everything that touches my belly causes discomfort or pain. I started massaging my belly and it helped to soothe my gut that has been in a shock since surgery and now going to follow advice in this video.

Get approved for PT. It should be covered and they specialize in neuropathic pain from abdominal surgery. Be patient it can take 1-2 years to finally get past the discomfort.

Two words: paper tape. I had very uncomfortable recovery due to neuropathic pain wrapping around my torso from abdominal surgery. Covering the scar with 3M paper tape was advised by my dermatologist and helped me deal with the incision site which is often also located at seam sites for clothing which can be terribly challenging. My PT had me massaging and breaking up scar tissue but honestly the biggest help was paper tape. Try it!

Very good video, thank you so much. I have a question though. I had a Nissen surgery when I was 6 weeks old and had a Nissen Fundiplication surgery again in 2019 but after the 2nd surgery I have so many adhesions inside from internal keloids that formed, so bad that I cannot do any abdominal exercises because it ends up in cramps on my stomach region. The cut is vertical from my sternum to my navel can I use these same movements? I also had my appendix removed when I was 16 but the adhesion are so bad it totally closed up my right Ovarian tube but the doctor cannot remove it surgically because it is also attached to the large intestine.. same movements?

I have a large vertical scar... this is my second vertical incision and this time includes above my belly button, (keyholed around it) down to my pubic area. First time was a hysterectomy, recovered well. This time because of the longer incision My belly button too small and tight and I hate touching my scar and pants are terribly uncomfortable. This surgery invoved removal of my ovaries, appendix and my omentum. Its been 5 months and while i am improving im still uncomfortable and cant bend at the midsection very well. Im usually flexible and on the go. Everyone says im just impatient but i dunno... feels too long. Also.. does the omentum change things??

I can relate, just had a abdominal hysterectomy with a large vertical incision. It has been 3 weeks and I feel like new issues keep popping up like rashes, irritation, painful bumps and they all come and go. It is hard to know what is normal and what is not!

I had a similar surgery and it took almost 2 years to feel better. My dermatologist recommended 3M paper tape (found cheaply all over) and it was incredibly helpful for an added and breathable layer to prevent rubbing. Good luck and be patient. It’s a long journey.

I had bilateral breast implant/explant surgery done 5 weeks ago. My breast tissue is adhered to my chest wall causing a lot of deformity in what little breast tissue that I have left. Your video is very helpful and I believe that it might also be successful on breaking down the adhesions in my breasts. If this practice is done twice a day for 10-15 mins or so, how long will it be before I notice more freedom of movement and less tenderness?

I am dealing with a two year old small scar above my pubic bone after an slow healing infection occurred after a large cycst was removed from my left ovary. My ovaries were removed at the same time as I'm 64. No cancer so I was not concerned about that possible issue at the time. My osteopath has suggested using a soft Pilates ball to massage all the front and side abs and QL. It has helped and since you mentioned cupping I will get a therapist to do some. I've had it done on my quads and IT band as I cycle and hike quite a bit. It does work well for me. My incontinence resolved after the surgery and my BMs are great. Increased stretching with different breathing techniques as I cycled, hike and weight train has helped greatly. I have cut back slightly from kegals and hypopressives suggested by my pelvic physio. I have a slight prolaspe in the front of the vagina after the surgery. Perhaps the prolapse was caused by the scar above the pubic bone. Too much tightness pulling on the soft tissue of my pelvic area. Never had any issues previously as I one natural childbirth at 32. Your info is quite useful. Thanks. 😊

Hi Doctor, when I was 1.5 year old, I had an intestinal intusucception surgery. The scar is like 2 inches above my belly button. I am 33 years old now and earlier this year, I was admitted to the hospital for "small bowel obstruction" for the first time after my surgery. The obstruction got cleared by itself and I was told that the possible reason for the obstruction might be the surgery performed when I was a toddler. Now that I don't have any symptoms, I just want to know if I can pratise this exercise that you mentioned in this video on my scar(horizontal scar measuring like 15 cms approx). Also, would like to know which doctor or specialist would be the best one to help me identify which exercises to perform for better health related to this condition. (I am pretty active and exercise regularly at the gym or outdoors but just confused at times thinking whether whatever exercises I do would help me Or harm me?) Thanks in advance for your time 🙂

I am generally afraid to touch the scars......16 days after surgery....but I totally understand, that this massage is important....I just cannot connect to the area, that the surgery has been done on, like I feel separated from this part of my body....I did the belly breathing from right after surgery and it has been a big help against the pain...I did not have to use the morphine pump once. Now I try to start connecting by softly stroking my belly while clothed. It was even hard to look at the scar and I did not dare to take a shower before day 13 after surgery eventhough the scar looks quite well healed. The hole for the drainage actually looks worse, but also well on the mend......ooh looking at it is still hard for me...

You don’t need to nor should you necessarily “touch” your scars so soon. Get your doctors advice. Request a referral for PT to help you recover and learn the right way to treat the area. This is a slow recovery, took me nearly 2 years. Paper tape helps with clothing seams that touch the incision site. Good luck!
