Awesome video. I just did my GS350 which is practically the same. Wish I would of seen your video before doing mine. Like you I have done this on many old cars and it is always a messy job 😊…believe it or not my old Pontiac Sunfire with “sealed” transmission used a similar method with two noticeably easier steps. 1) it had a fill cap with a beefy o-ring. Cap was located at the top of the transmission so it was easy to use a funnel to refill. 2) it only called for “normal operating” temperature and drain excess fluid from check plug while idling in park…very similar.

The dealer is not dropping the pan and changing the filter, they just flush the oil. They quoted $200 to do it, I failed to ask if that was labor and materials. I'll DYI the brake fluid flush, spark plug change, cabin filter, air intake filter, maf clean, oil and oil filter myself. Also ordered RC-F control arm bushings, hopefully I'll have them soon, really want to replace the squishy bushing that destroy my front tires.

Finally got around to doing this today after getting all the parts and fluid months ago - I managed to get the filler plug out with a 24mm ring end spanner without much difficulty as none of my 24mm sockets were small enough. Upon removing the drain plug, fresh smelling clean red oil emerged. Upon removing the drain pan it was very apparent that someone had done a full service very recently, but it hadn't been put in the log book. Oh well, at least now I know. Also found the same thing when I did the diff recently - prior owner was fussy about maintenance, not so fussy about records. What a horrifically messy job - I've done a few of these on other vehicles, mostly ZF transmissions, which are super easy as long as you have the pan with a drain plug. With this, I was not prepared for how much fluid remained in the pan - couple that with the old rubber gasket being quite firmly stuck to the transmission and I ended up with a enormous mess on the floor. Then there was getting my fluid pumps hose into the filler hole, which was extremely difficult in the cramped conditions under my ramp and jack stands - then endless pumping (I wanted to be sure given how much I'd ended up with on the floor so ended up putting about 5.5 litres in - not sure why the service manual says 3.7 litres as even after all that spillage I had 4 litres in my catch pan after draining, and after brining the transmission up to 40 degrees and opening the leveler valve I got less than 500mls out of it, so it's got something like 5 litres in it right now. Next time I think I'll either see if I can borrow someone's hoist, or just pay them to do it for me. Give me a ZF any day.

Nice to see someone doing everything right and taking the time to teach other people to do everything right! One other thing I've discovered with Aisen-Warner A series transmissions is Nulon, an Australian lubricant company do a OEM spec full synthetic ATF fluid that is much cheaper than the Toyota ATF. I've run it in a number of Lexus and Toyota vehicles over the years and it's been brilliant. I've also run it in ZF6 transmissions as it meets their specs too - again it's been great in the Germans too. No idea if you can get it in the USA though.

Those dipstick thing that you mention if it can open like a drain look like an oil level “max capacity” when re-filling the fluid.
@cpfb683 жыл бұрын
Hi! Not sure I understand what your assking. There is no dipstick in this transmission. The only way to properly fill and check the level is to have a cool vehicle, open the drain plug with the level tube in place and warm the trans to the proper temp and open the plug. If nothing comes out you need to add more after colling down. If some drains out, wait until a trickle and close it up. Should be the correct amount.

For those who want a Complete (Trans, Torque Converter, and Radiator-Cooler) fluid exchange vs an approx 40% pan exchange, the following 2007 RAV4 approach SHOULD be applicable to Most makes and models: 1.) Remove the plastic shield under the front of the vehicle. Note, new assorted plastic push-clips are recommended. 2.) The radiator cooler transmission fluid out-fall is on the drivers side approx 3/4" OD, 3/8" ID rubber hose with spring clasp clamp -- EASY to see and access! 3.) Disconnect the hose and attach an extension line to a translucent 1gal jug in an catch pan (for overflow/spills). 4.) The steel return line may drip into a second catch pan. 5.) Snuggly attach a clear extension line to the dip-stick tube with a funnel. (I inserted a clear plastic kitchen "baster" keeping the refill level from overflowing at top of the "baster"/funnel). 6.) Start the engine and put in gear (automatic) until approx 1/2 gal OLD is collected and turn off engine. 7.) Fill approx 1/2 gal NEW. 8.) Repeat for approx 2 1/2 gals until bright pink is dispensing. 9.) Reattach radiator/trans Return line. 10.) Adjust fluid level to the low side of the "Cold" mark on dip-stick (so you can top-off to the Hot mark). 11.) Drive vehicle until transmission is up to approx 115 deg. F and adjust fluid level to "Hot" mark. 12.) Reattach the plastic shield using new plastic push-pins. 13.) This should replace the Trans, Torque Converter, and Radiator Cooler with ALL New Fluid. NOTE: For Sealed transmissions attach an extension line with funnel to the steel Return line (instead of the non-existent "dip-stick tube"). Happy motoring!

all the flashing lights is normal when you jump those pins, code 43 and 45 will show as well, just start car as normal and shift into D, then go back and forth to N and D fast until the gear display disappears from the instrument display, then put gear back to P, gear display should still be blank. then standby and wait til gear display show a solid D, then the fluid is in temp range for fluid level check, do it before the gear display starts flashing, when it flashes it means temp is now higher than range for level check.

Great video! I'm glade you made this. Question, was it necessary to swap out the filter as well? I just assume that since most cars now these days don't require to be replaced that it would of been okay to just to do a drain and fill?
@cpfb684 жыл бұрын
All Automatic transmissions need a fluid change regardless of what the manufacturer's call "LifeTime Fluid" . You could do a drain and refill but to get the most amount of fluid out of the transmission, short of the flush, you would need to pull the pan off and then take off the filter. You can see in the video that when I pull the filter off about another 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart drops out. I feel if I'm going to pull the pan down and take off the filter to get the fluid out, I might as well change it. By pulling only the pan drain plug you get only a little over three quarts out. By dropping the pan and filter you get about five and a half quarts out. Its up to you if you want to spend a little extra money to change the filter. THe pan gasket and filter is a little over $30. The pan gasket can be purchased alone from Lexus, online, etc for between $20 to $25. For $10-$15 more its that much more protection for a very expensive replacement!

I have a Lexus 2014, model Es250. Unfortunately, I haven't changed the transmission oil, since I bought the car. The car is a single owner, and it currently has 180, 000 km.. The agency says that if they change the oil, they won't guarantee the transmission or the repairs. Some mechanics say that I can change the oil with no problems to the transmission, others say that it is a high risk. What can you recommend? Thanks!
@cpfb684 жыл бұрын
Zaid Almymoni from my years working on cars, if you have a high mileage auto trans with zero fluid changes in its life, to do a complete flush puts you in a possible situation that it will start missing shifts. As the trans clutch packs wear, they put microscopic metal shavings into the fluid. The clutches use this metal as an abrasive to continue to shift properly. If you flush all the fluid, you loose the tran’s capacity to lock up and the issues start. Some just let it go and hope for the best. You might try a minor service where you open the drain plug, drop 2-3 quarts and replace with fresh. That mixes new fluid with the old. Do this minor service once every 5k miles when you do an oil service. If you feel the trans slipping, stop. If not, do it 3-4 times and you should have almost all the fluid changed. Once I hit 100k miles, I start to do a minor service with every 5k oil change anyway to keep the trans fluid fresh. Good luck!

I did my first full service (pull pan and screen, 6+ qts) at the 60K major service (plugs, rear diff fluid, brake fluid, major trans service, coolant if you want). I then followed up with three minor services (pull drain plugs and refill, about 3qts) at 1K miles after the major. This helps to keep a lot of the particles that are suspended in the fluid and helping the clutch packs to engage to stay in the system but still lets you get fresh fluid for longevity. It helped a lot. I just completed this on my car today. I didn’t replace the gasket; it was still in great shape. My car has 76k on it. I did one additional drain after doing the filter replacement. After I did that I did the level set using a thermal gun. On thing I didn’t expect was the additional fluid that comes out when pulling the filter off. But it was a minor ; I had a shop rag handy. @cpfb683 жыл бұрын
Not knowing how many miles you have on your trans, how many times the fluid has been changed before, my first guess would be you may not have enough fluid in the trans. When you watched my vid, you saw I had to add more fluid a second time as when I popped the plug the first time nothing came out, after dropping in 3/4 of a qt. about a 1/2 qt. Came out. Iv’e since done a second and third minor service (just popped the plug and put in 2 qts) and have always double checked the fluid level to be sure there is enough in there. If you have a high mileage trans (150-200k miles) with no pervious fluid services, and you are 100% sure the fluid is at the right level, you may have slipping in the clutch packs. If you are sure the noise is in the converter, I’m not sure other than it’s slipping.

@@xwarriorx123 logically if he replaced exactly the same amount he took out it would be ok as long as it was the correct amount to start with. Many in my F group that have done the trans service have stated they end up putting back a little to a lot more than what came out. I believe I added about a 1/2 qt. More than what I took out. I know nobody serviced it before this service. If he didn’t measure what he took out and just pumped some in until it trickled out without warming the engine to the proper temp range, you may have too much in the system. As it heats up the fluid expands and will drain out to the proper level. If you feel it’s not shifting right then take it to a dealer or a certified Lexus Tech and have them check the fluid level bringing it up to temp using the Techstream software.

Ok. So safe to assume it’s never been changed. There are two schools of thought. 1) don’t touch it at all and start saving $$$ for a new trans in the future. 2) do a minor service and do a few of them every 1K miles for 3-6 times. Trans holds about 12 qts and a bit more with the converter. You won’t get everything out unless you do a true flush. If you warm up the trans and pull the drain plug, you will get 2-3 qts out leaving most of the old fluid which has a lot of the metal material that is probably helping the clutch packs still engage. If you haven’t started to feel any slipping or shift issues you can do either option. If you have already felt some issues, I recommend option 1.

@cpfb682 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t use Lucas on these newer type of trans as they are extremely different from the trans of the old 70s, 80s and 90s. Depending on your mileage and how often you have changed your fluid, a simple pan drop, screen change and refill will make a huge difference. If you have been good and changed the fluid every 40-60K, this will work well. You can wait about 1K and then pull the drain plug and straw and drop another 2 qts and add back. If you do this two or three times after the screen change, it should feel like a new trans. If not, then you may have a bigger issue.

@@cpfb68 Okay, seems like this will be worthwhile for my 2011 w/ 115k miles then. Thanks again.
@cpfb684 жыл бұрын
Be careful, an auto trans with higher mileage may not benefit from a full fluid change. If the trans has any damage, the fluid will have more particles that keeps the clutches from slipping. If you drop a significant amount of fluid at one time, the trans may start slipping. To be safe, just pull the drain pan plug and pull 3+ qts of fluid out and replace. Drive it for 1K miles and see how it shifts. If there is no slipping, pull another 3+ qts out and go another 1K miles. If you do this three times, you will get close to 80% of the fluid freshened. If it does start to slip, it may be that your trans was already starting to breakdown and the fluid was holding it all together.
@CheaperEngineer4 жыл бұрын

@cpfb684 жыл бұрын
So, over my years of many cars, when an auto trans isn’t serviced regularly, I have always done a basic service on it multiple times over time. A basic service is where you just pull the drain Pan plug, drop 2-4 quarts (whatever comes out) and replace it. I wouldn’t do a full service with filter and more than 6qts (DO NOT DO A FULL FLUSH!) if you drop some of the fluid and replace with new, drive for 1K miles and do another one. Drive another 1K miles and do a third. You should get about 80% of the old fluid out with new. The reasoning is, if the trans has any major wear, the particles in the fluid is what the clutch packs are using to lock up. If you flush the entire system, you can start to have issues with slipping. By leaving some of the old fluid in with the metal material in suspension, it will continue to shift.

@cpfb684 жыл бұрын
@@andrewpaul4680 Andrew, IF you are going to have him drop the pan, go ahead and change the filter too. That is a full service (like in my video) but without a flush. A simple service is just pulling the plug in the pan and leave the pan in place. It will get you between 2 and 4 qts out. If you pull the pan and filter, you will get close to 6 qts. Your trans probably holds 9-12 qts depending on which one you have. It has a converter that holds quite a bit so if you pull 6 qts out its half and might cause issues.

Don’t do the full service (filter and pan drop). Just pull the drain plug, drop 2-3 qts and replace. Drive for about 1K miles and do again. Keeping most of the old fluid keeps any particles that are suspended in the fluid and is what is keeping the clutch packs functioning. It’s possible if you do a flush, you take away the particles and start to have shifting issues. As is get up in miles (sadly..soon) I will do a simple service to the trans (pop the drain plug and and fresh) every oil change. It’s just another way to keep the trans fresh and lasting longer!

@cpfb6811 ай бұрын
If you have a constant low rad fluid that you refill every 2-3 days, you can crawl under the car and look around the trans bell housing for the signature pink dribbles of coolant. Thats a VPL sign. If your coolant level isn’t changing and you have Bubbles in the coolant tank makes me think it’s something other than a VPL. It’s very rare but a head gasket leak? Exhaust backing up into the coolant creating bubbles. If not that, I’m not sure. Possibly something wrong with the water pump inducing air into the coolant. You need to get it checked by a good mechanic that knows the IS F. Good luck!
