If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth (Welsh for "My Nest") in general, welcome! I'm Ariel. I live off grid (as in no physical connection to public utilities) in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming. I've been living this lifestyle for over four years now and love it! What will you find if you follow my channel and watch my videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. I split my own wood for heat, carry my water by hand, and attempt to grow as much of my own food as I can between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from my mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
I live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning sceanery and wildlife that I am surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of of the nature and wildlife around my home. If you are interested in my photography or purchasing a photo, I'd love if you follow that over at Facebook.com/ArielCelestePhotography or ArielCelestePhotography.zenfolio.com!
For a bit of my background, as a child, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend much of my free time exploring and playing in the woods. Little has changed now that I'm older I suppose. I moved to a place with a bigger woods and still enjoy spending my time outside gardening, hiking, exploring, and photographing the natural world around me. As the eldest of seven children who grew up in a homeschooling family, I had the opportunity, not always appreciated at the time, to learn to do quite a bit of work. I've enjoyed a wide range of jobs, everything from greenhouses and flower arranging to wilderness therapy with teens, to milking cows. Mostly, I enjoy doing the kinds of things that I think provide a real service or value to others. Some of my other hobbies include backpacking, hosting people, cooking, preserving food, anything to do with nutrition, reading, journalling, and sitting around a fire and talking to my close friends.

I’m 65 years old. I’ve water fasted 7 days but would love to go 10+. I did fast for 20 days after a traumatic accident but that was not elective. I always feel SO much better! I like knowing I can go without food for days and be OK. I know people who cannot go one meal without food. I eat a large quantity when I do eat but only eat when I’m hungry and I eat simply. I almost never eat breakfast. I typically eat between 11-2. Great to hear you talk about and sensibly explain this Ariel.👏🏻

You are an inspiration. I used to fast as a young woman. But somehow thru the decades of life...I stopped. I am now inspired to start again. Slowly. I’m already intermittent fasting 14-16 hrs a day (usually) but see that I need at least 16-18hrs and then progress to a day+. Thanks for the valuable info. You are something else. 💡

Hello Ariel. Your an amazing woman. I am just fascinated by all you do, how much knowledge you have, how much working you do.... Gardening, wood chopping, cooking, canning, speaking engagements, helping all the other people whether it's cooking maintains property, your own yard, etc. I love watching you cook. You cook like my grandmother cooked, as well as I do and that is you don't measure. And that is including baking. Everybody says you have to measure everything exactly when baking. Well not really. But so can't wait for you garden this year. God bless you, Ariel. Keep going. Your doing AWESOME. And I'm gonna try to at least try one meal a day to start.

Hi Ariel, great topic today. I actually just completed a one day juice fast in preparation of some baptisms, of a few people in our ministry. I’ve done fasting periodically for religious reasons throughout my life but I did not know all the health benefits until this video. Anyway, I just want to say that I love your lifestyle and the things you care about plus how you share with others. You are an inspiration to me. I would love to have friends like you. I think you are sweet.

Great video. I agree with you on the fasting. My first fast was in 1985 after a pastor read Isaiah 58. I said to myself I'm doing that. A 3 day fast on Lake Michigan and when I went back to the church a couple people told me that my countenance had changed.(for the better) Fasting really works. At the rate your going with lite eating and fasting you could live to be over 100 years old.☺️👍 Thanks for sharing.

Just found this great video! I feel kinda silly commenting, when it‘s been on air a while now. I just love that you‘ve confirmed each and every detail about fasting that I have also found at several other sources - which compells me to continue fasting in regular cycles. I usually do OMAD anyway, but also do 3-day water fasts every couple of mos. Since I‘m on a strict Keto diet, I sometimes get worried when my ketone-tester said 6 or 7 and I do have some trouble sleeping during these fasts. But I always feel totally recharged after an extended fast. It‘s truely a wonder, our bodies. I am sure it can improve every aspect of your health. Our bodies need a rest from time to time. And now thru youtube and your channel, we can share our stories and help support each other. I do hope you keep going Ariel, you‘re just amazing!

Very insightful Ariel. I do intermittent fasting and am more likely to fast on weekends for a couple of reasons, one being just resting from having to cook. I do have a stressful job and do not do a complete fast during work days as it does effect my performance. I am in my 50’s and have found that fasting can effect my ability to think quickly. I've never fasted before. I didn't realize all of the benefits that Fasting could do for you. Simple me, I just slack off on eating for a while in order to keep my weight at a place where I know that I am lighter on my feet and also seem to have more energy to work my full time job all day. I could see where someone that is trying to loose some weight, could feel better about pulling back from the table and using some self restraint, to do them selves a lot of good. Thanks Ariel

Ariel, you never fail to hit topics that interest me. You're full of good surprises. I've wanted to do this for a while. I've been gradually intermittent fasting for at least 12hrs a day most of the time, but haven't had the will power to do a 3-5 day fast yet. I do find myself eating meals, when I know I could go without sometimes, just because I'm home at lunchtime or something. I've done some research as well and certainly seems like common sense that it has benefits, since we wouldn't be eating 3 meals/day (or more...or any at all even) if we didn't live in abundance like we do. It's so easy to get sabotaged by a holiday meal or a tempting bag of dark chocolate reeses cups staring at you.

VERY interesting video Ariel. Comes just as I'm getting more interesting in food for my body. I was always interested in good food for my mind, that is fair trade and biological. And of course the yummie factor. But I am more and more interested in what exactly food does to my body. So your telling me that toxic goes out first when you're fasting was a new one and a very positive one for me. I always start trembling when I don't eat for a longer period. That always stops me from going on. And I also would be inclined to just stop doing things. Perhaps I should reconsider and regard the trembling as something of my mind and not of my body. Food for thought! Thanks for the video.

Again, I'm not a doctor and highly encourage everyone to do their own research on everything in life. In my experience, there is a difference between hunger feelings and something actually not working in your body. If something is not running correctly, you may want to consult with a professional and see if there is something else going on causing that to happen. Pushing through wanting to eat a pizza is one thing. Trying to force your body to do something that is making you feel terrible is another.

Hi Ariel, enjoyed your layman’s dissertation on fasting. Nice background on your experience with intermittent fasting and your personal research on the subject. Will use you thoughts on before, during and after fasting in my own fasting program. I believe our bodies are still programmed for the hunter-gather’er mode. Being older (70yrs) I eat smaller high nutritional meals and have been since my 40s. A result has pretty near perfect health & blood pressure, except for some wear & tear on the mechanicals after working 55yrs. I think the stimulus fasting provides the body is a good thing. I also believe in moderation in all things as a perspective for us to keep in mind. Thanks for your perspective. Totally enjoy your channel, you hit just the right tone for those of us that enjoy nature in the wild and can live somewhat solitary existence. As Northwoods man perched in my cabin on a glacial esker surrounded by 80ft whites & oaks with spring fed streams & lakes in northern Wisconsin I totally get into your thoughts & activities you present. Particularly enjoy your pupper Burley. Maybe you should consider getting a pal for Burley and name him Hurley🐶🌲🦅🌲❄️🌲 Keep doing what your doing, take care out there....

Thanks for sharing on fasting. Agree on every point! I've lived a lifestyle of fasting for about 10 years - mostly as a spiritual discipline. The amount of time fasting has varied from one day a week, two days a week, and/or a multi-day fast, the longest being 9 days. I envision an internal PacMan (old gaming character) clearing out internal debris and re-setting anything that was off balance. For me, the most important gains are spiritual in nature. Again, thanks for sharing!

Hello A. Very interesting and USEFUL subject. Coincidence ? The last few months I tried and did fast Saturdays (not every one but most). I did that in memory of my my grandmother (the old country) , remembering that she was fasting one day a week(religious reasons, being romanian ortodox) , and in memory of my youth(when I was more healthy). Great Topic...I know many people who have benefited from fasting. I also agree that although many people believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I am like you and almost never eat breakfast on my own and only when others are around. I think also in general people do not drink enough water...just the other day at work we were talking about it because I fill a gallon jug with water and try to drink at least that amount during my 8 hour shift, but there are many others that think I’m crazy and when sat and figure it out only drink about half that amount each day and usually it’s not water, but is other liquids, coffee, pop/soda, energy drinks, and things with lots of sugar.

I have no problem believing that people who take care of themselves through fasting have improved health. The big question is, does fasting help people who don't care about themselves? What's the operative part, caring about my health or fasting? a fantastic video . i couldn't agree more . i happen to be in my first 7 day fast . i've done several shorter days fasting over the last 2 1/2 months . my first interests in fasting have come from michael mosley, jason fung and peter attia (in that order) . it started as an interest for weight loss but progressed to all the great benefits you've mentioned . i do intermittent fasting also (16-8 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm ) . i do eat a quarter pound of homemade sauerkraut (a spoonful an hour during the 9: to 5: timeframe to stay in ketogenesis in my multi-day fasts for fiber, nutrients, probiotics and salt) . i thought it would be next to impossible for me to do long fasts . turns out i never have gotten hunger sensations yet . everything i've heard is "there will be hunger sensations.". i even googled online to see if the was a medical reason for NOT having hunger .

After that it mostly goes away. On day 11 it came back, that's why I chose to stop that one at that point. But I know everyone's bodies are different and dealing with different things so I don't assume that would be the same for everyone.

Excuse me Burley!! Paw on the plate! How rude!! 😂 he’s so cute. The longest fast I’ve been able to do was three days. I started to feel a little strange so I ate. Now I realise that it was probably my electrolytes being a little off and I could have done more if I had taken care of that. I plan to try again this month and see how I go this time!

I always have been interested in health research. I have not always done what I know is best lol. I think fasting is some low hanging fruit and after a recent illness I have fasted a few days. I am seriously considering strategic fasting and this video is right on point. Thank you. I wonder if once a week or three days in a row once a month is better. I think the latter. I read many years ago that getting old happened because we run out of digestive enzymes and fasting will definitely prolong our longevity. It will at least significantly help to prolong it. Janice

8:10: Can you give a link to the actual studies that say this? Not a link to popular literature, but to the *actual* journal article. I am not against fasting. Rather the opposite. I think everyone should fast. If nothing else than to experience what many people in the world today experience because they still do not have enough food to eat. *Side note:* Careful about water only fasting for extended periods, it can lead to ketosis. Drinking fruit juice (fresh from the fruit is best of course) can help prevent ketosis. And anyone with a diabetic condition should not fast at all.

As a Muslim I fast a whole month every year, it's called Ramadan and I've been doing this since I was 10 years old😊 and many fast two days every week for the rest of their lives. Only pregnant or nursing mothers not fast. Could you please talk more about your food,what you eat and the foods you don't eat, like grains, beans. Another thing, could you please talk about the lie about cholesterol? and how it's being used to spread baseless fear, actually the higher the cholesterol, the less likely one get a heart attack.
@FyNyth
@FyNyth 5 жыл бұрын
Nice. I know many people across most of human history have been doing some kind of fasting for thousands of years. I am working on a bunch of new cooking videos. I don't personally find convincing evidence that cholesterol in your diet has much effect on the cholesterol your body makes. Not to mention that it seems it's part of your bodies response to damage much like white blood cells. So the fact that it's found where there is damage does not mean it's causing it and needs to be avoided. Kind of like we don't need to get rid of firemen just because they tend to be found where there are fires.

@@FyNyth thanks for your reply, I love you girl; you are such an inspiration, I wish I was as brave as you when I was younger. Another thing, could you please share with us how you break your fast? What do you eat and how much, etc. That would be so great. In my religion, we are advised to break fast on a bit of warm water or fresh milk and one or three dates only, then take a break to pray, meditate, rest, etc, then eat but not a lot. And as we fast for a whole month from sunrise to the sunset, no food or water or any sexual activity during this time, we are advised to get up before the sunrise and eat something like three dates and a glass of milk. Anyway, sorry for this long comment, I just wanted to share my experience. Love and peace💚❤

I usually just go back to eating my normal foods. So lots of veggies, some whole grains, pastured or wild meat and eggs. Since it's something I do regularly, I've not had a problem with this. I know some advise a very light start to returning to eating.

good doggy About 25 years ago I went on an 8 day fast (religious). On the Friday before the 8th day Sunday I drove 600 miles to a job. Worked Sat. & Sun. The plan was after work about 4PM, I would start driving home get a motel room and a nap, get cleaned up and go to a restraint and end the fast. The motel was off the interstate - 1 motel and 1 restraint - for miles. I woke up, got cleaned up and went to the restaurant - hungry, it was closed. I ended the 8 day fast with crap from the motel vending machines. I still laugh at that one.

Do not forget to brush your teeth even though you are not eating. Think about how your mouth gets overnight causing you to really want your mouth cleaner. You don't want to save money on food only to spend even more at the dentist later! Have never fasted and was afraid to try due to being diabetic, but after seeing this video and reading all the comments I am definitely going to try it. Had planned on going Paleo this month anyway so that should be a good start. Clear out some of the garbage first. Always look forward to your entertaining and insightful videos. I admit I would struggle with 5 or more days although I'm sure it would be a good thing. I don't honestly fast as I do drink herbal tea, broth and may even munch on a raw carrot or celery etc. Sad but true, Guess I'm just weak that way : ) Best wishes to both you and Burley and I look forward to your next video if you survive this self torture lol Paul I doubt Burley would want to join you in that 5 day fast : )

I've tried several times to fast, but I can't go over 1 day, and even this is hard (even if I'm not someone who usually eats a lot, I'm only 105 lbs) : after several hours of being angry, I've got terrible stomach cramps and eventually faint... I know this might have psychological origins but I don't know how to avoid it. But your video definitly makes me want to try again...

If your body is responding that way you probably don't want to push it. Maybe if it's something you really do want to pursue the benefits of, you might want to consult with a doctor about the cause of fainting. That isn't a good thing.

Since he's still a growing puppy, no. Once he's fully mature, he will do some fasting as well. Probably just a regular one day a week break. Most wild animals take breaks all on their own or out of necessity due to lack of food. They seem to share many of the same benefits. Though some days he does choose to not eat on his own already.

Thanks for another thought-provoking video! I have also been practicing fasting/cleansing, in different ways, over the years. Wanting to do more of it now that I am living tiny!!! Quick question - I have watched you video on your off grid water system, do you get that water from a well/spring? Can you drink it directly? Or do you need to filter it? And, do you need to treat your water tank with anything to keep it clean? Thanks again, Kari

Yes! Largely the fasting symptoms come from an electrolyte imbalance. This is similar to the ketoflu. Regular salt (for sodium) and Morton lite salt (for potassium) and Magnesium citrate pills works wonders.
