@santoriniblue84133 жыл бұрын
@@HoH You simplify too much a complex issue which cannot be well understood. France and Spain acted on behalf of the Sultan. Spain was allocated the wasp nest of the Rif, because the United Kingdom did not tolerate a rival power like France controlling the other side of the Strait o Gibraltar, and Germany was not not acceptable to neither UK or France. Spain was a lesser power and due that it already had strongpoints in the area, was allocated the task. Abd el Krim worked for the Spanish Admin. His brother studied Mine Engineering in Madrid, because the family had interests in iron ore mines. This knowledge enabled them to set up a business of selling mining prospects in the Rif, some existing, but most were a a scam. Aside from his personal political ambitions, the uprisings helped to cover up the scam. His story parallels that of Arminius, the son of a Germanic tribesman who held Roman citizenship and also dreamed of using his knowledge to destroy the foe and carve himself a kingdom. Like in the Rif, many sided him, other remained loyal to the metropoli, and finally others changed sides again, according to the events. The African garrisons where the not precisely the priority for most of the Spanish governments after nearly 20 years of relative calm, but that year a severe famine would and thus underfunded. This "low cost pacification" was basically done making agreements with the different tribes, exploting their rivalries and bribary. Field operations were carried out by Regulares (native troops with Spanish officers), a formula used by most colonial powers in Africa and Asia. The Spanish conscripts where mostly devoted in garrison duties at Ceuta and Melilla, and as a support in field operations. The risk of such scheme is that a change in loyalty leaves you in a critical state as the British also suffered with the Indian Sepoy Mutiny. The collapse of the colonial empire, and the spread of leftiest ideology the population was very reluctant to casualties. The Army had already reallized it needed professional units that could take the brunt. That is how the Spanish Legion was created as a shock unit. Bad coordination and rivalry between Silvestre and his promotion comrade and superior Berenguer, didn't help either. Silvestre overstretched his line and resources without awaiting the promised reinforcements. Licencing some of the veterans is also unexplainable He underestimated the force that was mounting againsty him in spite that some loyal chieftains had advised him. He would soon discover his force was being harrassed by a combined force many times stronger than reported. The moment of change rises when the bulk of the native troops change sides, and the disbanded retreat of the main force towards Melilla. KIA at that point is 1963. Around 3000 take cover in the fort at Mont Arruit, but with lack of food and water, only hold out 12 days. General Navarro is authorized to surrender and terms of surrender agreed, that the force shall abandon its weapons and depart to Melilla 30 km away. When most of the soldiers had delivered their weapons, they were massacred, only the officers including G. Navarro where spared due to their value for a ransom. 2600 butchered and a similar quantity massacred as the sum of other minor positions. Like in Arruit, officers were spared. Col Araujo commander of one of these positions was courtmarshalled afterwards, as he was aware or probably even negotiated knowing the fate of his men. It was the exception, but some harkas (war bands) did honour the surrender terms. Final balance of the desastrous campaign was 7.750 dead and 514 prisoners among the Spanish, plus an estimated 2500 of the native troops that remained loyal. Some riffian chieftains remained loyal. Others, joined by coaction; but as the wind changed, turned sides again. The blunder forced the fall of the Spanish government and changes at all levels. As Marshal Lyautey commented on getting the news: “The Spanish soldier, who is as brave as he is suffered, will be able to know better times under other commands.” He himself was sacked in favour of Petain, who with Primo de Rivera, would envisage. Regardless of the military campaign, Abd el Krim's fate was sealed when the religious leaders of Fez decided not to support him and remain loyal to the Majzen and to the French. Some isolated acts of brutality where more a personal initiative of some units as a reaction of rage to the massacre, doing the same. All wanted to move forward, relations went calm afterwards, and many enlisted in Franco's coup.

Nice job. You rarely see items on this subject. Not sure about the reasoning you mention for the Ait Ouiaghel fighting at dhar Obarran. Riffian tribal politics were complex. The eastern tribes didn't put up a huge fight against Sylvestre for a number of reasons (including bribery and the effects of the first push against the Spanish under Mohammed Amezian). Essentially, Riffian tribes were not united behind one goal. The Aith Ouiaghel decided to defend the Ait Tamsamane at Dhar Obarran. It took Abd el Krim a lot of effort to convince the tribal elders of each sub tribe to enter the war and defend another tribes territory. Dhar Obarran, Anual are not Ait Ouiaghel lands after all. But bordering on Ait Ouiaghel land, and since the Spanish were advancing and no real fight was being put up, he was forced to mobilize the Ait Ouiaghel, Ait Touzine and Boquqqa tribes. Eventually Abd el Krim managed to unite the Riffian tribes and the Jebella tribes to fight for one goal.

@pmcdermott5865 жыл бұрын
Still me! I think the same figure, again strongly resembling Franco, is the officer pointing in the centre of the frame at 8.39. Spain's humiliation in Morocco was one of the key factors which led on to that terrible struggle, the Spanish Civil War.

The Spanish should not have gone into Morocco the first place since by the 20 century they had become a backwater. If militarily strong France had not supported Spain (which by this time was no military power) bid to acquire territories in Morocco then Spain would not have become involved in Morocco. Supposedly, the French did this in order not to be seen has taking over that part of Africa by the other major powers, especially the Germans, that were carving up Africa. In the end, the French knew they could manipulate the Spanish.

Rif is not morocco. Rif has been occupied by morocco since 1956 with the help of Spain. Rif Republic will arise again without any doubt! Vive Arifoblique

Much false information, i dont know where u got the info from, Abdelkrim had ALL tribes under him, not only his tribe. He never asked for priviliged for only his tribe. He never asked for the sultan status. The rif tribes in french territory asked him for help. Abdelkrim only surrended himself after french and spanish bombed them with chemical bombs from sea and air, he didnt want his people to die this way. He did accept the kings invite to return, ‘ the king mohammed the fifth called him even father of the warriors’ to his country but he died after two months and the new king; his son Hassan the second, didnt accept him back. I can go on and on. Get ur facts right.

In another video by someone else they go into much detail. The Spanish were in war with the Rif Republic while France did not get involved. Supposedly, they even had some ties to the Rif Republic. Initially, Spain got involved in Morocco because France allowed it. Anyway, the Rif were destroying the Spanish. Bad military commanders and interference from the Spanish King. Remember, some years before the US had defeated Spain. So the Spanish did not want to lose face in there fight against the Rif. At that point the Spanish decided to use gas weapons dropped from the air. But what really did in the Rif republic was that they attacked the French protectorate. Once France got into the war they were done for. The French also then used gas dropped from the air and sent in forces.

If it didn't use Islamic law but went fully secular, then it could have been the beginning of the full liberation of all of Tamazgha kicking out the Arab oppressors of the Amazigha.
@Zakariya36032 жыл бұрын
@Amazing Amazigh Arabism was invented by Michel Aflak who was a Syrian Christian, it's essentially based-off French nationalism that crushed individual indentities in France after the revolution and was adopted by Arabs, the French knew that an Amazigh-ruled Algeria or Morocco would greatly hamper their interests in Africa so they put Arabic puppets in charge after the Algerian war.

@Amazing Amazigh Not to mention many non-Arab Muslim ethnicities like the Chechens, the Afghans or the Senussis were the Muslims who dealt heavy damage to Western forces when the Arabs lost all the time against either Israel or the U.S. The Arabs only managed to kill 170 Americans during the Gulf War whereas the Afghans killed between 15,000 to 26,000 Russian soldiers between 1979 to 1989.
