Emily Duh Jedi Not really, since the women that captured her didn't prohibit her from learning. And in the Disney animation they make it clear that she likes learning new things, her "mom" talks to her, so she learnt how to interact with other human beings before she escaped the castle. And she knew how to read and liked it, so she was taught quite a lot...

Yes. I've seen a video about a girl who was raised by dogs and had dog-like behavior. Babies and young children will absorb any information they're exposed to, which is why stimulation is important otherwise a child can become feral like Genie.
@gratefuldead4714
@gratefuldead4714 7 жыл бұрын
Dogs don't *really* have a language, they just use body language and sounds to communicate. Like, if you hear a dog bark, it's not them literally saying "good morning sir, how are you on this lovely day?" It's just a sound to express itself. Like if it were fighting another dog, it'd growl and show it's teeth to strike fear in the other animal. So I guess anyone can really pick up on that, but a child surrounded by only dogs would only know how to live like them

I'm guessing her language is based on imagery and memories ... for example, a person that knows a language and wants a cup of tea will say "mmm, I really want a cup of tea, I'll go make some" in his/her head and, at the same time, have some memories of making tea and images of tea ... now take away the language part and you will kind of get how she thinks ... with probably the "mmmm" noise in her head ...

When I was a kid my parents put on Spanish tv (before I could talk) and talked in English to me in real life. for a couple years I spoke Spanish (almost) fluently. Sadly I went to long without really needing to use Spanish (9 years) so I can only understand some of it and can't speak it at all. In my opinion this was a much better method than watching shows like Dora which are like 99% English and only teach you like 100 words.
@luc6284
@luc6284 7 жыл бұрын
That's how I learned English! I live in the Netherlands and so, my native language is Dutch however because of the fact that Dutch television usually never translates English movies or programmes (only with subtitles) Because of that I had a good basic understanding of English at a young age. Later on at secondary school I chose bilingual education which means that most of my classes are taught in English instead of Dutch. That's how I learned to speak fluent English. But it's because of the Dutch television that most Dutch people can talk English A LOT better than Germans for instance because they translate all the English movies to German. And that's why Dutch people are known for speaking tons of foreign languages

I wonder what her thought processes were like without language. Just a conglomerate of visuals and feelings? How did she question things? Could she still have an existential crisis? I guess, just because she can't COMMUNICATE thought, does that mean she still has a stunted sense of self? Something as integral as language is introduced to everyone from birth and highly shapes how the brain takes in information. But what if we lived in a society that ingrained a completely different form of communication before the critical period? How would that vary us as humans? Interesting thought.

As a child, I was taught 6 different languages, due to my extremely diverse family. Those languages were French, Italian, Colombian Spanish, German, Danish and Swiss. I learnt English at age 7, as I was interested and my grandfather was able to teach me. When I was diagnosed with a brain dysfunction at age 14, doctors blamed the fact that I had learnt 'too much' as a baby, but the real reason was because I was born with asthma and hearing deficiencies, which in hand gave me mild depression (I never seemed to feel it though). Although some doctors recommend you to not overload your child with languages and other major parts of learning, some also recommend it to improve your child's brain functionality in the future. Although I know people that are bilingual, it doesn't seem to be as common in places such as America or Australia (I went to Australia on exchange when I was 16, and I was shocked at the amount of people who only spoke one language).

A lot of people I know fromTogo, West Africa can pick up a new language as easy as picking up some dry cleaning. My friend Olivier, (who already spoke French and his home language of Ewe), went to a college in China to learn Mandarin. I asked him how long it took him to start speaking at a basic conversational level. He told me, almost embarrassed, "It was difficult for me to learn; it took a year and a half." I asked him if it was it easier to learn English. He explained that the instructor he had, taught English-speakers, so he had to pick-up English from her to understand instructions, on speaking Mandarin. Two for the price of one; I'm so jealous of you multi-linguals.

BlurryAngel, it happens. Not everybody starts at the same time. Recently, a lot more people have been getting their periods or other signs of puberty younger. Some are even seven, however, most people are about 12 or 13 when they start their periods, and other hormonal changes can happen before that. There's nothing stopping him/her being 10 and have been going through puberty. It happens early for men sometimes too...

When I was around 2 to 5 years old, I watched a considerable number of preschool shows, like “Higglytown Heroes”, “Imagination Movers”, “Dora the Explorer”, “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse”, “Special Agent Oso”, “Blue’s Clues”, “Go Diego! Go!”, “Ni Hao, Kai-Lan”, “The Backyardigans”, “Peppa Pig” (which was my personal favorite until mid-to-late May 2015), “Elena of Avalor”, “Sofia the First”, “Handy Manny”, and “Butterbean’s Café” (my personal favorite preschool show). Of course, I was more into things that are completely centered at girls (I was a VERY girly person). I was also a HUGE fanatic of LeapFrog (starting when I was 3 years old, and ending 5 years later), and had a considerable amount of the company’s toys, music, and books. My first LeapFrog device was the early 2000’s version of the LeapPad, and then got more, such as the LeapPad Platinum (I had a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game on the LeapPad), the LeapsterGS (I ULTIMATELY had a SpongeBob SquarePants game, which helped my love of SpongeBob grow). Also, Professor Quigley was my favorite LeapFrog character, and would stay that way for a decade, until Edison became my new favorite LeapFrog character.

I certainly noticed it's a lot harder to learn a language now (am studying in Japan and trying to learn Japanese) than it was when I was younger (started learning English back in Sweden when I was like 8). But I am still learning and will probably become fluent if I work long enough. So, how does this relate to the critical age? Am I just applying the same "rules" I learned in Swedish and English to learn Japanese?

Suppaz It's fairly simple just start off with the basics A-G then you have #-sharps and B°-B diminished chords are also simple the best way to learn without a teacher is video's showing you step by step ( tbh playing the piano is very painful I have very bad bones because of it and I've only been playing for 3 years 😂)

Piano sucks to learn, I play bass mainly and I know a very small amount of piano, the thing is with it is practicing isn't fun. Instruments like bass, banjo, guitar are all fun to play and learn, piano isn't. It's boring and monotonous, that's why I dislike piano.

how are people multilingual then? did they learn mulitple languages before the critical period?
@PhoenixB4U
@PhoenixB4U 8 жыл бұрын
No, you can learn languages after the critical period, but they are a lot more difficult. I think in the case of these people who were isolated during their critical years, they never really learned even ONE language...so they have nothing to base their understanding on/their brains were never 'wired' for languages.
@anakinskywalker7289
@anakinskywalker7289 8 жыл бұрын
Tesla_Ray_Gun21 many of multilingual have a sorta interconnected. For example I know Spanish and English. But Portuguese and Italian are two languages I don't know but I can understand somehow due to the fact they come from Latin. My point is if you understand 1 language you gain he concept of Conjugation, Feminine, Masculine, Past Tense, etc.

No (well in my case yes, but that's not the point). What he said is that teaching someone who doesn't know any language what-so-ever, past the puberty stage, how to speak is incredibly difficult and close to impossible. If people couldn't learn a new language after the critical period, we'd be screwed for international deals in the UN or the EU.
@mindlessreader1595

It has to do with our brains understanding how language even works as far as I understand. If you never learn one, it becomes near impossible to learn any after the critical point

I grew up learning in a special school for gifted children and special children, so I learned how to do ASL (even though I'm not American, but we use it anyway) by experience and other things. There are lots of tutorials in the internet, and you might even want to start with learning the letters which were always the easiest. You could also learn the movements of songs/prayers, and I can say it's pretty effective to try to connect which words/lyrics go to which movement since I've done that a lot in my school. I'm no pro since I don't exactly practice it, but I usually do it for fun and I think I'm pretty okay at it.

I remember a story about 2 young girls who were essentially Tarzans but for Wolves. It goes that these girls were abandoned or orphaned when they were really young and wild wolves in the surrounding area took them in, making them having never seen another human before but themselves, unfortunately for them, when they were eventually discovered by other humans and took into society, it was discovered they were suffering from many health issues, and not too long after, the younger girl died, and eventually, the older one.

oh, how long i have spent trying to do that. at a point i felt like i was on the edge, almost there, that a tiny bit further and i'd have successfully imagined a tesseract in all its 4D glory. but turns out that thin barrier between me and success is unimaginably tough. i couldn't break it. then i gave up. fuck. but, if it helps, the closest i felt to doing it was when i was trying to resolve what a 3D shadow of a 4D object really was, and backtrack the 3D projection to the original 4D object. doing this going from 2D to 3D and then trying to draw out parallels with one more dimension in each side helped a lot. it was exactly this that made me feel like i was the closest i've ever been to doing it.
@Mrwiseguy101690
@Mrwiseguy101690 8 жыл бұрын
We can only visualize 2D because our eyes create a 2D image of a 3D world. That is only with a static image though. You can visualize a rotating cube but if the cube and pov was static, it'll be a 2D quadrilateral. To visualize 3D, you need either movement of the object or pov. To visualize 4D... you can't do it. Time is the fourth dimension and the fourth dimension isn't spatial.
@noahnaugler7611
@noahnaugler7611 8 жыл бұрын
+Sponge . well, if you can't see the third dimension without motion, then the third dimension is time. the fact that we have two eyes is what let's us see in three dimensions, because two non-parallel planes require a third dimension to coexist

I know exactly the type of person you are, you feel nervous to communicate with others, except for the people who are very close to you, you're insecure about many things in life, and you probably don't go out too often either, you like being in your comfort zone and you hardly want to step outside of it, you're probably very concerned about it and you want to change yourself but it just doesn't work even if you try very hard to change yourself, you don't feel afraid or nervous to talk as a group but your heart starts pounding when you're alone with someone and run out of things to talk about with them, so you just back off from all forms of conversation to play it safe. Dear god why do I find this so DAMN RELATABLE ARGHHHH!!! ;-;

Acquired taste, some people associate new things with expensiveness, and people yelling: "Hey don't touch that! It's new!" And end up only liking used things they can dick around with and not worry about messing up. I think of my mom as an example, my Dad has always earned a good wage at the potash mine he's been at for 40 years, and offers to buy my mom a new vehicle, she will complains about the leather, or the heated seat controls, or the modern dash, or whatever, and instead always opts for a 10+ year old GM piece of shit SUV that's always breaking down, but she likes it causes it's simple like the farm she grew up on.
