Professor João Pedro de Magalhães graduated in Microbiology in 1999 from the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia in his hometown of Porto, Portugal, and in 2004 obtained a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Namur in Belgium. Following further training in genetics at Harvard Medical School, in 2008 Prof de Magalhaes joined the University of Liverpool in the UK and established the Integrative Genomics of Ageing group. His research on genetics, ageing and longevity has been widely featured in scientific magazines and he has published over 100 scientific papers. Prof de Magalhaes is a world-leader in big data and computational analyses. In addition, he has a long term interest in technological trends and their future impact on society. His work on predicting how technology will shape the human condition has been published in magazines such as Futures and The Futurist, and in newspapers like The Independent. Prof de Magalhaes has given over 100 invited talks in international conferences, and in many academic institutions and companies (e.g., Google’s Calico and Allianz). He also makes regular media appearances (BBC, CNN, the Washington Post, the Financial Times and many others). He is Chief Scientific Officer of Centaura, an ambitious biotech company in Switzerland focused on healthy ageing , and founded his own his company Magellan Science Ltd.
The annual Ending Age-Related Diseases (EARD) conference by Lifespan.io brings together longevity thought leaders together to exchange research reports, inspire and get inspired with new ideas, find collaborators, supporters, and mentors.

People, there are a lot of people who don't know yet about longevity research. It's not just about informing you: they have to repeat the same information over an over so any advances within the field reach as many persons as possible. Bear with the scientists! :)

Treat and/or cure is more preferable. I don't wish for anyone I know to suffer from ARDs as well as not have economy or society that we live in suffer from the ill effects that degradation from age causes.

Only got in 10 minutes, it's kind of boring when the presenters are re-explaining things that have been spoken of for at least 5 years if not over a decade. Really need to have an appreciation for the executive summary, avoid spinning tires without moving. Otherwise people will lose interest and move somewhere else.

Even if we did find a way to reverse aging we would still eventually die, age reversal would just give us more time and we would not need to die from old age, but we would not become immortal. One could still be hit by a car and die.

@@SlamminGraham so am I 😄 and everyone else for that matter, at least if it is presented in the right way. My point is that the word "immortality", or "living forever" is wrong in this context and just confuses people.

@@orhanmekic9292 I think immortality has taken on a distinct meaning in this community. Not having to die of old age is a ridiculous step up, especially when you consider that just about dying from ANY disease will quickly follow suit. In fact that may come first given the difficulty of solving ageing. From there it only gets more and more hardcore as we eliminate pretty much every way there is to die and master things like augmentation, mech suits, mind uploading, advanced rejuvenation etc . It will get to the point where we basically are indeed immortal. Only things like the heat death of the universe will be a threat at that point
