Light vs Dark Lure Color: Which One REALLY Catches More Fish?

Dark water or dark bottom = dark lure / clear water or light bottom = light lure - it’s really that simple. Only reason to change up is bait in the area… fish eating lots of dark mullet = dark lure, fish chewing on white bait (green backs, shrimp) go with that lighter lure - match the hatch as river fly anglers do.

Most of the time that’s true but I have seen occasions where there will be a shrimp run or some other bait moves in and the fish will key in on that color. Or some dirty water moves into an area where it’s normally clean and the lighter colors still work better. I believe you can’t go wrong for the most part just matching what the fish are eating.

If only lure color selection was truly that easy. I think there are some general rules that work well, and yours are as good as any, but nothing is 100%. I carry a LOT of different colors but I think an angler needs just three basic colors---light (slam shady, white, glow, etc), dark (black, brown, purple, deep blue, etc) and bright (orange, hot pink, chartreuse, fire tiger, etc). If you're carrying one color from each group you have most scenarios covered.

I'm stoked about the glow in the dark 2.0 coming out, and hoping your other soft plastics will be available in glow. I'll have to find places without ribbon fish to use them because those things are brutal at night around the Chesapeake Bay all summer. I suggested glow in the dark about a year ago and I'm happy to see it happening. Ordered my first pack today.

i use both but i found out if fish are hungry.. they will gobble up both.. once again the 10/90 rule comes into effect...just saying🤣🤣🤣

100%!! When they’re chewing they’re chewing! The difference is when they get picky.
