Im light skin, and Ive always thought that I wasn't "true Black" because of my skin colour. Im not mixed either. I've felt guilty for having light skin, because I felt I was a bad person just because of my skin colour. I've also thought I was a bad person for being Black. It's like we can't get out of the negativity we feel and the discrimination we get just for being Black, and then us hating ourselves, then colourism within our own community. No one should hate anyone for being darker or lighter, dark skin is beautiful, all shades of Black people are beautiful. We are all Black. We already struggle just being Black, and then people have to be ashamed for their own skin, light or dark. Even as a lightskin, Ive been called several racial slurs and have encountered many racist schools. Racists dont see darker or lighter, they see Black. As dark and light skin, we should stop hating each other, and stand up for eachother, as we all experience discrimination. If you think you better for having lightskin, quit that bull. We are all Black brothers and sisters in this struggle. It's really heartbreaking.

Bruh. I’m white and just seeing how so many sitcoms constantly show us mixed girls, with Eurocentric features portraying a black girl with two dark skinned parents , is the massive prove that colorisme TO WOMEN is a real thing. My friend have a dark skin, perfect facial features and a perfect body, but people treat her like a below average looking white girl. She’s treated like garbage by black men, and when she started to date my cousin “ who’s white” and who adores her, black men and some lightskinned girls started to call her a swirler and a race traitor. They found it horrible, that she refused to stick to, some black men that will constantly remind her that she’s the bottom of the barrel, no matter how pretty her face is. Light skin girls, ( and white girls) who deny their privileges are just humble bragging.

Personally I think pretty privilege is the real privilege. Skin tone alone does not make that much difference. I bet if this girl allowed herself to get really dark in the sun nothing in her life would change and she wo be treated the same.

Darkshadow no. Eurocentric beauty standards are real. If it wasn’t the case then blonde hair and blue eyes wouldn’t be described as the epitome of beauty. Black women have to look like Naomi Campbell to be considered barely above average, while a white girl with blue eyes , just have to not be hideously ugly to be considered cute. That’s the hard truth. If being light skinned and white, didn’t gave you privileges, then you wouldn’t see dark women bleaching their skins even tho it’s harmful for their skin texture and brunettes dying their hair blondes, even tho it’s harmful for their hair textures. We always preach that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but you always see peoples ( especially straight men), showing the contrary. I just hate sugarcoating things. I never saw a white woman wishing that she was black, a light skin black woman wishing that she was darker and a blue eyed woman wanting brown eyes, but I always see the opposite. There is no smoke without fire, these women don’t wish to have lighter features out of nowhere but because they saw the privileges it can give.

I would be in line at the grocery store and hear black girls behind me talking about my hair and why would I get a weave like that and how ridiculous I looked. None of the black people wanted to help me when I found myself needing help, most just looked away and didn't talk to me nicely or anything. I had to get help from every other race except my own, especially the white people who were very nice and helpful to me. FFWD 3 months, a new hire joins (DS black man) all of the black people were joyous to help him and even went out their way to be so much more welcoming and helpful to him than they did with me, it was so obvious too. I did not have this problem with white, asian or hispanics though. Keep in mind I was the only LS biracial man with curly hair and they totally made me feel like I wasn't welcome and it made me despise myself for not being accepted by my own people, especially in a public work setting. I grew up comfortably, far more comfortably than most black people, and since second grade, was always bullied for being the lightest lightskin kid out of all the black kids in my school. At age ten, I layed in 35 °C heat without sunscreen for 3 hours straight in hopes that I'd somehow become darker and ended up violently sick for a week straight. The nickname "coconut" followed me through all of my 12 years of schooling and especially in highschool bc I'd thrown myself into being more "hood" in order to fit in. It didn't help that I never spoke with a "blackcent" (bc it was shamed out of me. Or that I never went to school hungry until I developed an eating disorder. Or that I didn't understand half of what other black kids said to me bc I was "raised white" and they got angry at me for my mother buying "white people" foods. I can't even remember the amount of times I've cried bc my mother forced me to straighten my hair for school bc my curls looked to "untidy and wild" It took my own father admitting that he ID's as black bc of our roots, for me to even try and lay claim to the "black" label and our culture. Yes, I recognize my privilege as a light skinned black person, but the shade of my skin doesn't mean that I haven't suffered, and I'm sick of anyone trying to tell me otherwise.

HA I WISH my light skin got me some privileges. Any time you look black or black mixed you will be discriminated against subconsciously. I’m light and my nephew is white skinned but we have black features and we still get profiled, get looked at like we are up to no good. We were stopped by police at the hospital I work at because a white woman said we stole her iPhone. They then took my and my nephews phone to let her see if it was hers 😅 I sued ofc. Just the other day with my husband in the store I was waiting on him to try on sweaters. He was in the dressing room and I guess I stood still too long and some old white lady came to see what I was doing and proceeded to follow me through the store until she saw my husband who is Asian and white. So uh no, maybe a few select rich light skinned people may have privileges but the average light skinned or mixed woman does not and I’m so sick of hearing it. We struggle just like you because no matter how light our skin is, you can’t easily erase blackness.

When I was growing up I was picked on by dark/brown skin people, I hated going to school and I always felt like an outcast. I have been told multiple times throughout my life I am not black because I am light skin I am not black enough because I am light skin. I have had to deal with hate and jealousy from all women of different complexions. I think what is most important is that colorism is addressed and the cycle is broken. The only way this can truly end is if people stop seeing color and I don’t know if that will ever truly happen. It is important for people to have confidence and love themselves, you should not think you are superior then someone else because of your complexion that pertains to a light skin woman or a dark skin woman. I have overheard darker women talk very badly about lighter women I do not think that that is fair because they do not like when we talk badly about them. We all must be fair and stop disrespecting each other and start viewing each other as human beings all of this colorism/racism bullshit is for the birds and it is something that I will not participate in I see people for who they are not for their complexion.

No one is better than the other and everyone has experienced racism and colorism and everyone continues to propagate colorism. I was bullied so hard for my hair, skin tone, the way I talked, etc... this “light skin privilege” that people speak of does not apply to all and its also dependent upon other factors like where you live, your socioeconomic status, the schools you go to, etc. I’ve seen black guys that don’t date ds women, sure but I’ve also seen the opposite where they won’t even give you the time of day unless you’re darker. I disagree I became a monster because of what I endured for being light. I was born and raised in Watts, CA. I was beaten, molested, raped, jumped, and basically torture until I became a beast at the age of 13. I was called Casper, ghost, light bright, glow worm, and ugly. I’m 41 and still don’t believe I’m pretty. So I learned to fight, I studied hard, I learned to sing, dance, play instruments, write poetry, rap, draw, and paint and was still beaten. At 13 I got jumped by 3 females and 2 males and they beat me up really bad. I thought they were going to kill me. I was told I would never be shit and no one loved me. So I learned to fight and started gangbanging. That was the last fight I lost too. I was depressed and didn’t care about anything, I lived my life to die. I got into one abusive relationship after another until I became pregnant and turned my life around. Now I help kids like me. So I don’t believe in light skinned privilege! I was fucking tortured and then they blamed me when I became a monster! I couldn’t help my skin color, or eye color, or my hair length and texture, but I beat the hell out of anyone who had a problem with the way I was born! I’m light skin and I have darker skinned sisters. Adults in my community would always tell me that I was lucky I was light skinned and they would always compliment me in ways that belittled my sisters. My sisters had my back in school and I was always too young to have theirs because people would mistreat them for being darker. In high school, I was bullied by a dark skinned girl but it had nothing to do with me being lighter because she bullied darker skinned girls as well so I don’t really have the experience most light skinned girls say they have or had with bullying like that. I think this colorism situation has really turned me off these movements altogether because when it comes to issues like racism and body positivity, people can easily explain why those they deem privileged should not say certain things or even do certain things for the sake of their comfort but when it comes to the colorism movement, whenever dark skinned girls say that they are called bitter and are told they are dismissing others. I’m not saying thats not true but I’m sick and tired of people trying to make that a dark skinned girls thing because most people in society do that these days. Let’s not generalise is what I think will work. Not all light skinned girls think they are better and not all darl skinned girls are bullies. I feel like if we deal with things as we see them, things will start to change. If anyone is being bullied, speak up there and then. Don’t reward colorists in your communities with your time and respect. Don’t reward people who belittle others based on their shade of black at all.

Yes coloring is hugely prevalent, and gives us lighter skintones better treatment than on darker peers, but this all stems from white supremacy. We aren't white, we are proudly black! In order to beat this colorist and racist system, we have to stand together FOR EQUAL RIGHTS, instead of one of us benefiting from the others harsh treatment. Instead of insulting our darker peers because they are "too black or more dangerous and threatening. " We should be UPLIFTING THEM. Instead of insulting our lighter peers by saying they aren't black enough, we should BE UPLIFTING THEM AS WELL. If we are so divided in ourselves that we don't acknowledge the privileges and disadvantages within our community, then nothing will ever happen. We shouldn't blame lighter skin tones for having it easier just because of a system that is rooted in white supremacy, but at the same time we should acknowledge that we have a privilege because of this twisted system, and use it to uplift our darker peers who don't have that advantage. You're absolutely right. Dark skin women struggle different. I just wanna point out, though, that she didn't say a dark skin woman can't tell the difference between colorism and racism. BLM is a movement fighting racial injustice and prejudice not colorism, so why wouldn't a light skinned BLACK person be able to stand for BLACK Lives Matter if we are black? DO you see what I'm saying. Like she 100% validated Asian Dolls experience because she clearly has an experience that lead her to write that message which is fine. Sis simply shared HER experience as a black, light skinned woman being told that she can't stand up against racism because of colorism which as you pointed out is not totally unrelated in the general topic but she personally has never practiced or embraced it as the message suggests. Being bullied and being oppressed on a societal level are NOT the same. A white person who grows up in a predominantly black community can be bullied by black kids. However, that does not negate the fact that societal he is privileged based on his race. Same applies to lightskin. Lightskin face racism...because they are black. They can also be billed, sometimes by dark skinned people, however, it doesn't negate lightsking privilege. People need to understand nuances. Divided we fall and truly were all victims to something that got broken along time ago smh . As someone who is mixed and white passing, I have to disagree. I’m fully aware that they’re are many light skinned black women who don’t like to be lump with us, but I think SOME of our experiences are comparable. And with that, in the black community, yes, we do have privilege. We’re treated better, are seen as prettier, smarter, etc in black communities, for the most part. I can’t say EVERY black person, since there are darker black people who will hate us from the moment they see us. But for the most part, we are treated better in black communities. Now, in the mainstream (white) world, that’s a different story. Even me - as someone who is white passing, I have do have white privilege...as long as I’m fine with letting white people assume I’m white, which I don’t. And once they know, all that privilege goes out the fucking window. Colorism is definitely an issue that needs to be addressed without throwing any black person under the bus. Playing into colorism- where we separate ourselves in way that we think we’re better than other black people because we’re darker, lighter, or mixed, instead of more of the nuanced ways we experienced oppression or privilege, is just playing into white supremacy. And if anyone thinks I don’t know what I’m talking about - remember, I’m white passing, and I’m privy to A LOT of what white people say about all types of black people when they think no black person is in the room with them. Edit: just wanted to say that I don’t think lighter skin women are nicer or prettier - but the black community does see us that way and it’s weird. I once was friends with a dark skin woman who was a freaking model and I was still treated better. There’s something weird with some people who can literally ignore a Mona Lisa, saying that the stick figure is better. 🤷🏽♀️ yet another edit: I now realize that the title was click bait 😂

We’ve all had the experience of other black women bullying us especially during childhood and often we referred to it as “jealousy” when actually it was probably the build up frustration and pain from either home environments due to colorist family members, other kids being mean or spewing animal or racial related insults towards them.
