Katy Perry once said, "Using blasphemy for entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke" and I LOVED her for that. Like, a fart joke may be funny, no one's denying that, but it's a cheap, easy joke that takes zero artistry or effort. I think about this literally any time I see artists doing stuff like this.

She said that about Lady Gaga's Judas, right? Because to be honest, I did feel that the christian theme in Judas made sense as an artistic choice - it was provocative but it effectively used the imagery to convey a message. Same for Like a prayer.

It’s sad because montero was genuinely a moment and didn’t come off as a cheap move to generate controversy, it was a statement about his gayness and how the masses perceive gay people. The album itself didn’t even focus on being religious or satanic at all, industry baby addressed the common thought that he would simply fade away as a one hit wonder and also joked about claims of him being an industry plant. J Christ throws all that out the window, now coming off as a shallow attempt to cause controversy with no meaningful thought behind it. Lil Nas X already proved that he can make it without controversy with songs like “That’s What I Want” Or “One of Me”… I don’t understand what he’s doing, he’s honestly losing credibility as an artist.

I dont think the song flopping had anything to do with religion and blasphemy ( since when did people care what Bible thumpers think lmao ) . I actually think the REAL reason why it flopped so hard was because Lil Nas REALLY overestimated his relevancy, taking a 2 YEAR LONG BREAK when you're STILL an up and coming artist is a death sentence , I feel like most people didn't even know he released a new song, and the few who did know he was about to release a come back just saw that he's still on the same concept as Montero and just didn't bother

People comparing his controversy + work to Gaga, Madonna, and Doja will never not be funny to me. He's actually comparable now to Jason Derulo and Megan Trainor cause the only thing that fuels his career is virality and for an artist, that's not enough to be one of the greats. Strip off the controversies Madonna, Gaga, and Doja associated with their art, they would still be art cause they are true creatives. LNX on the other hand is nothing if you take away the trolling cause he can't sing, can't rap, and can't write songs. I've seen people giving him praises for Montero but for me, it's meh. People have already forgotten that album and it's not worthy of revisiting unlike Born This Way and Like A Prayer. LNX's talent is to be gay and weaponize it by trolling to go viral. I'd rather listen to Troye Sivan who puts much effort into his craft without getting controversial cause even if he goes controversial, he still has the talent to match it. LNX is just a nuisance at this point.

“Hollow provocation…” 👏🏽 I love that. You just summed up modern American popular music! …tbh, it’s nearly all forgettable, mostly, whether a single is a success or not. Like, for example, “WAP” was a (brief) moment, but what about in five years…? 🤨 Not much staying power to me. “Munch” is iconic and fun, i guess, for what it is, if not noting as hell… but in ten years’ time? 🤔 meh, Time will tell. But when every track and album released is a ‘moment”, and fades into obscurity quickly, that does sort of zap the music’s credibility. Hence why ppl like Beyoncé have surprise releases & surprise visual albums, without saying a word… it feels more epic, & the art is experienced in its rawest form. Unexpected and without preconceived notions… announcing that your next single is coming out “soon”-soon meaning YEARS sometimes-means fans will likely be waiting for it. Then when the time comes, and it’s not a bop, you look like you’re all talk. That’s society nowadays, though. All talk. Sigh.
@TanJRHeaux3 ай бұрын
I think one thing that is also often overlooked in these cases, is that these female (pop) artists that he’s being compared to often have a majority gay fanbase, & a lot of gay men hold internalized homophobia….. leading them to be much harsher on males doing the same things the pop girls are. There is something to be said about how women have carved out the pop landscape, and that many popular male musicians get popular from doing below bare minimum; but that also begs the question: how much are males allowed to be expressive and move about before they’re called “flamboyant” and told they’re “doing too much?” Are male musicians confined in a way, due to heteronormative expectations of males? To be fair, I’m not really impressed with this rollout either and it seems like a stale grab for attention & controversy; but I do think the aforementioned thing should be considered.
@adontecook8103 ай бұрын
The issue I have with this new rollout is it’s not new and he’s going put himself in a niche he’s not going to want to be stuck. Controversy is fine but it’s can’t be your only selling point that’s what pushed Madonna through

gonna be honest, i never liked the devil stuff with him. and i love to hate on religion. people tried to say he was “causing controversy” but he was literally doing nothing new or groundbreaking. it always came off to me like he was TRYING to be controversial, but his fanbase is majority women and queer people. so all he actually did was purposefully piss off some conservatives, which is a very easy thing to do and doesn’t break any glass ceilings. it had no real impact and this current devil stuff he’s doing again for whatever reason, just proves what i’ve always known. he believes his music isn’t good enough to make him famous, and his antics aren’t controversial enough to make an impact or a point.

He should trust his talent over gimmicks. The debut album showed promise, but it's time he took music a bit more seriously. The over-reliance on stunts is starting to betray a lack of confidence in the music's quality. Drop the gimmicks; let the substance speak. The question is can he sell without the stunts?Some would call his outrage marketing bold, brave etc. I disagree, it’s a crutch. It reveals an insecurity in the music's merit and its ability to make noise without the buffoonery.

I loved his promo and his music video. It was hilarious. Religious people aren't owed respect for their religious beliefs. People need to respect their right to belief, but not the actual content of those beliefs. What makes their beliefs special? People getting up in arms about Sam Smith, Lil Nas X, and Sabrina Carpenter are so silly. I will respect your right to belive that bushes speak to people, that boats can carry the entire animal kingdom, water can turn to wine, etc. But that is all nonsense. What separates a work of fiction from the contents of religious texts? Nothing. Just individual people convincing themselves that those texts are more important than anything else in the world and everyone should handle them with care since they believe that to be so. But isn't it a two way street? Others can see that as ludicrous and worthless and treat it as such. And you should respect that as well.

I wonder if I'm perceiving it different from you because I'm not American and I was raised by atheists and am pagan. Because neither Paint The Town Red nor this feel like "empty shock value" to me... it's just Christian imagery, it's like any other cultural imagery? Artists don't require deep messages to use religious imagery or anti-religious imagery. Maybe it feels that way to Christians or people who were raised around Christianity, but they don't. Anyone who was raised in a country where the laws and moral expectations around them were dominated by Christian morality has the right to use references and imagery however they like without needing a cause. Not all disregard is attention seeking. Sometimes it's just disregard.

It's just annoying that every artist who can't think of anything else to do decide they're going to insult Christianity. Ik Christians get a bad rap cuz there are bad people falsely represting the religion. But Christianity isn't the only religion that has a God, has rules they need to uphold, and call for rallying up followers. I wish celebrities would try this little gimmick with jewish, muslim or any other belief system. But they won't because as bad as christians may seem noones getting imprisoned, k*lled, or mutilated by the government for not believing in God. I just dont understand how people are allowed to poke at Christians, but Christians aren't allowed to poke back or speak up to defend their beliefs. Ik people have poor experiences with fake christians who try to make ignorant laws or argue about someone living their life differently but most of the time, those are fake christians. They dont represent the whole group and Christians are called to take a look at themselves instead of worrying whats in their brothers/sisters eye. God says that if you judge someone, you better be perfect because he will judge you double of how you look upon others.
