Whoever asked if you wanted Adagio to be redeemed... They obviously forgot who they were talking to.

Someone once suggested I redeem the over-the-top, hammy-ass, Disney-style evil queen in my novel. That someone got a stern talking-to. >.>

5:10 Oh God, now I'm getting flashbacks of all the "both sides" arguments I had to debunk. To this day, I *still* get comments every now and then trying to make a case for how both sides were wrong or, worse yet, how the Pillars were *completely* in the wrong. Well, at least I got some good tea out of it.

This was a good "writing and critical theory lesson", you have a good eye for picking out things a lot of people like myself just don't notice. Actually, I've been wondering something as of late. Since a lot of cartoons have been laying on the angst changing their shows from fun and happy-slappy to 'heavy and serious' (see Star and Tangled), what would be your 'recipe' to making a show that includes and balances both of those factors? I presume it would be a similar approach to sympathetic villains (give them a legitimate reason for their villainy/angst-ness), but since this covers a full story, would there be anything else to keep in mind?

This helped quell an ongoing desire I've had for the Sirens to return. You are totally right that any version of an episode involving them would have them be written as sympathetic like every other villain "redeemed" in the show. Thank you for setting my mind straight.

As furthur evidence of the merit of this type of villain design, look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU focuses on it's heroes and their arcs and development first and foremost and always uses their villains as an obstical for the heroes, and they don't need to be anything more. Killmunger does have a point that Wakanda could be making a big difference in the world, but that's the extent of it and he primarily serves as a wake up call boss for T'Challa and Wakanda as a whole. He's more a physical manifestation of the consequences of Wakanda's isolation policy then a full character in his own right. Zemo is the physical representation of the theme of "The Avengers actions have consequenses" that drives Civil War; he exists to push everyone in just enough of the wrong direction as to get what he wants. What makes him so powerful is that he airs Steve's biggest mistake "keeping Tony's parent's murderers a secret", and it result's in the first time the Avengers fail to overcome an obstical as Tony becomes the final boss for Steve. He also serves as a sort of dark mirror for T'Challa, who finishes his micro arc by getting to pick up for the Avengers slack. Even Loki, to date the only recuring big bad, fits this design. He was an obstical for Thor in his solo movie and then an obstical for the Avengers in their movie, he just stucj around to become a very iffy asset to Thor in the next two Thor movies.

*Claps hands once* YES! /Thank you!/ I thought I was the only one who thought Glimmer's entire existence, motivation and redemption was bullshit! Sweet /shit/ it's nice to not be alone in a crowd anymore! Little Miss Hypocrite aside, this is a solid video. I've never even considered the points about classical villains that you raise here, but this new knowledge has made me reconsider everything I thought I knew about writing characters, and that's a good thing. And I'm also feeling rather gratified that someone else also shares my opinion about redemption arcs, especially for those characters unsuited for it.
