We play "Calliope House" occasionally for the dances of a local contra dance/folk dance society. I play bass with this band. This is how I became familiar with this tune.

This was my mother's favorite Christmas song. She would love it. She played accordion when she was young. She grew up in Deutschland during ww2 and after. My grand parents had a saloon in Germany and everyone in the family played in the band. My foster grandfather played tuba, my Uncle played Clarinet, so music is in my family's blood! My dad bought the first Beatles album, yes, the one from Vee Jay records with "I want to Hold Your Hand"!!!

The tenor banjo has been assimilated more into Irish traditional music, more than the five-string, but the rhythmic structure is similar to old-timey string band music.

It's always nice hearing you play with accompaniment :) If you have a recorder or something, maybe you could record the sound from the mixer too? Just a stereo mixdown to maybe mix in with the camera audio, might be an improvement. Thankfully your playing cuts through very well :)

You killed it, Phoebe! 🙌 I have to say it, I found it odd how the violinist kept on turning around to either face you, the drums, or the singers.
@JKwakulla7 күн бұрын
If you watch this again, notice whoever the fiddle turns to is up next. At one point Phoebe nods her head as the fiddle player turns. It is fairly common that first violin, or in this case, the only violin, is the musical head of the orchestra or group. For an example, if you watch The Peterson's, Katy, on violin, is also the musical director of that family band and does all of the arrangements.

Dang! I always hated this song, but this arrangement is great!
@Greencheez-y7 күн бұрын
Great playing! I was just wondering how you're achieving those rolls you're doing at the beginning and throughout the song. Are you utilizing the "California roll" technique where you're also up picking with your index after the drop thumb? Or is it a series of pull-offs while drop thumbing?
