I'm an American who lived in Serbia during the late '90s, and in my experience the Serbs tend to break down into one of two types of people: they were either incredibly friendly and would happily share their last bowl of soup with you or they were secret police/army and some of the scariest psychopaths you'd ever meet. In either case they tended to be extremely knowledgeable about their history, I remember asking one of our embassy drivers "What's the story of that castle?" I was expecting a quick little response, instead he begins by saying "It all started 500 years ago when the Turk invaded..." While I was not prepared for such a lengthy answer at the time, I definitely believe that the Serbs helped instill my love of history.

@@dominickd16 I live 30 min drive south of Hamilton now, but grew up just east of Hamilton in the suburb city of Stoney Creek, it has probably a 60-70000 total population, and 55000 at least are either former Yugo’s, Italian, Polish, or Siek Indian, it’s the craziest little city in Canada, for the most part everyone gets along, but because everyone is so different people keep segregated amongst their own a lot, and actually tends to lead to most of the problems there, but when people come together, everything seems to work out, and can cross those cultural boundaries. I like to think I had a very unique perspective of the situation as I was very much an outcast in that I was from a Dutch family, so I didn’t have the choice to keep segregated, I had no choice, I had to interact with everyone. It was also weird because growing up I was one of the few kids in my grade who was actually born in Canada, yet I was the odd ball, the misfit amongst my peers. Made for a weird childhood, but with many experiences not many other typical white boy’s got growing up in North America.

There is actually a pretty easy explanation to the stereotype of Bosnians being stupid. My great-grandfather was born while Bosnia was still "technically" part of the Ottoman Empire, so he was schooled in alhamijado writing, writing our language with the arabic script, using arabic letters to represent single sounds pretty much like the Latin or Cyrillic alphabet does. During his life, he went from Ottoman school kid to Austro-Hungarian Jäger to being a train conductor in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia to a pensioner in Commie Yugoslavia. Even though he spoke 3 languages and knew how to write in 3 different fucking scripts, he pretty much did not know any well. Oh, and obviously as Muslims, pretty much none of our grannies went to more than 4 grades in school, leaving many of them literally illiterate. I still remember this 90something year old woman signing a document with an X, as she did not know how to write, as her dad did not consider schooling girls of any importance. So yeah, kind of explains it. :D

Interestingly, the German speaking Slovenes over the border (who vehemently deny their slavishness due to historical persecution) in the Austrian province of Carinthia also have a distinctly "soft" Austrian German accent. As a slovenian I think the stereotype also comes from how slovenia was always more progressive than other countries from balkan, for example, it held the first pride parade and was way more tolerant of queer people than something like bosnia or serbia for example, alot of queer people fled the other countries for better life to live here. That's just my theory tho.

The monkey thing for Macedonia started as a barebone insult from the greek and greek aligned views, initially it was received fiercely to a point of physical and insulting combat however it was simmered down over the years because the ultras/supporters for the football team from Prilep blatantly call themselves "Majmuni" or monkeys. So it stopped having that initial derogatory meaning where there is no need to aggressively respond to it. Just a little info dump.

As someone from Merica, I know little of the Balkans, but I have a stolen story. So this Army recruiter comes to our high school, and he yammers on about the army, and someone asks him about stories from where he was stationed, and at one point, he was stationed in Macedonia, and he and his crew were given r&r, so they went off to explore the place they were at right? Well one of the first things they discovered, was that a US servicemen’s salary translates quite well into Macedonian currency, so they rented a hotel room normally reserved for literal diplomats, and spent most of their time there just drinking and partying, and came back to the base at the end having spent less money in a week then they would have if they had just stayed on base. They net profited from partying in the Balkans. That’s all I have, y'all have a good one!

Stereotype about Croatians as bootlickers (or sometimes as "Austrian hostlers") was coined by Serbs. It stems from the fact that Croatia was a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Reign of the House of Habsburg brought many improvements, made a big cultural impact and actually built Croatia in those times. Even today, there are roads and buildings made by Habsburg monarchy, which are still in use. But, under the reign of the A-H empire, the fact is that Croatian people of the time were recognized as a constitutional nation. And that right was earned during wars against the Ottoman expansion toward Croatia and further toward Central Europe, when Croatians fought and bled heavily in order to stop Ottoman's progress and to keep their cultural heritage... which they've actually succeeded, as opposed to other Balkan nations/countries, which were for centuries entirely occupied by the Ottomans. And that's one of the biggest reasons why Croatia and Slovenia are culturally different from their eastern neighbors, and why their cultural heritage is more aligned with the western civilization. The other big reason is acceptance of the Catholic church (lead by the Roman Pope), after the division of the Christian church into Catholic and Orthodox (so called the great Schism of 1054. AD).

On the flip side to the Slovenia not being under Ottoman rule (much): the 3 times the Turks tried to invade Austria with the Sultan at the helm (Siege of Vienna doesn't count, prime minister went rogue there) 2 times going through Slovenia broke the advance and ended in a route one way or another. Mind both times they experienced summer rains in Dolenjska, which for those who don't know the forests are a coinflip of regular forest & concealed bogland, uneavewn terrain and general river silliness like the Krka river carving a ditch where it flows meant the camels got sick and died off & the bronze canons were lost in various ways.

Greetings from 'North Monkeyland'-adjacent Bulgaria. I just found your channel, it brings me much joy because no one west of Rijeka or east of Bucaresht truly understands the balkans and the intricate racism we have woven over the past centuries.

As a Mexican who lived in the Balkan for 2 summers it was so weird how similar we are lol. But serbia is my favorite! Živeli. Should do a video on the 90s war songs 😂😅

As a Serbian I was also surprised to see how similar we are with people from Latin America. I guess our similar traits stem from very difficult lives. If tou think about it drinking too much alcohol, eating too much food, dancing and singing despite all the shit going on is a must if you don't want to go crazy during difficult times. Good health to you and yours brother. PS rakija is better than tequila

Nope, nobody there loves each other. Slovenians and Croats kind of tolerate each other, both being of Western societies, but that's about as far as it goes. I wouldn't push it. And it's suspicious how it's always the Serbs proclaiming "brotherhood", "unity" and "love"...

Yes, there is nothing in between. Either we love each other and would give a last drop of blod to our neighburs or we thing we are theonly normal here and everybody else is an animal. So stupid. P.S.: there are any people that hate and love in the same time - they hate other nations but love that man/familiy form a few houses down the street and don't care that he is from that other nation...

You’re right, we Americans also have a lot of stereotypes for each other (even though we are all pretty similar). Northerners (especially New Englanders) like myself are sometimes stereotyped as being as cold, mean, and snobbish.
