Haulover Inlet in Florida is a popular spot for experienced boaters seeking a thrill. Known for its challenging conditions and strong currents, the inlet connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway and is famous for its rough waves and strong winds, which can make boating hazardous. Despite the risks, many boaters are drawn to the inlet's challenging conditions and the opportunity to navigate through it.

You pass port to port! The boat exiting was on the wrong side!
@GodBlessedAmerica

There are no “designated lanes”on the water. If that were the case, people would have to cross from one side of a waterway to the other just to pass port to port. In this particular situation, the captain of the vessel entering the inlet should’ve stayed to his own port side of the inlet. The exiting vessel was already holding a line on the north side of the inlet.

Port to port passing is the standard according to the Rules of Navigation. If a collision had occurred, the outbound vessel would have been at fault. It's amazing to me just how many boat owners have ZERO understanding of the rules of navigation.

Why has the State, County and City made the decision that it is safer to have No Speed limit in the Inlet? What is their reasoning for those kinds of speeds in close proximity to other vessels in the confined area of the Inlet thinking they are safer than slower speeds and better control of the vessels? It would be the same thing as them saying it's now ok to drive 70 mph through residential neighborhoods.

0:52 the boat coming in was in the right and the boat leaving was in the wrong. You pass on the right, navigations lights would also dictate this "red right", meaning if it was dark you would pass on the right of the red navigation light. The boat exiting didn't leave enough room for the incoming boat to pass on the right.

The captain of the Grady entered Haulover inlet taking a too narrow turn to stareboard and so he saw the outgoing boat at the last second ...... Having said this, the outgoing boat was also too much on the port side of the inlet, rather than staying on the starboard side. n case of a collision, who would have been at fault, the Grady White, the boat exiting, or both?
@GodBlessedAmerica
@GodBlessedAmerica 3 ай бұрын
In my opinion, the Grady White should’ve held his line entering the inlet and passed the exiting vessel starboard to starboard. The exiting vessel was already holding a line on the northside. I assume the exiting vessel was using the north side because it’s smoother on most days. The traffic on the water doesn’t have a “designated lane” to stay in. It’s pretty much common sense which isn’t so common anymore.
@BoatZone

@@GodBlessedAmerica Hello GBA. This situation is a bit confusing. The Grady White captain was coming from the south side of Haulover Inlet, possibly from Miami. As he entered the inlet, he was closer to the center line towards the south side of the jetty. After passing the open entrance, he turned to starboard, and that’s when he got on a collision course with the exiting boat. Do you think the Grady White captain did the right thing by turning to starboard, or should he have stayed closer to the jetty on the north side?
@GodBlessedAmerica

The Grady White took the appropriate measures at all time. first attempted to pass to starboard of the oncoming boat, slowed and when all failed was forced to go to port. The boat exiting the channel put the Grady at risk as well as others possibly entering the channel. At no time was the boat exiting knowledgeable about navigating a boat, coast guard should track the boat down and impose a heavy fine. And this BS about boater safety license doesn't make you a good boater....AS a boater I have to say any boat that goes over 45 Knots a the captain should have a special license to operate...too many clown out there.

No different than driving a car in this situation....If both vessels are approaching head on then do what the boat entering the inlet did...THE BOAT ENTERING THE INLET DID NOTHING WRONG...HE DEVIATED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION... LITERALLY... If head on , be it a vessel, a car, and even people walking along the sidewalk...unless unable to turn to the right would be the only reason... SIMPLE RULES... >If another vessel is approaching you head-on or close to head on...each vessel is expected to TURN RIGHT... > If another vessel is approaching you from the port side or left side of your boat, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY & SHOULD NOT CHOP OR CUT YOUR THROTTLE..MAINTAIN YOUR SPEED AND DIRECTION... > If another vessel is approaching you from your starboard side or right side, THEN THEY HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY AND YOU DO THROTTLE BACK TO ALLOW THEM TO PASS... Otherwords, the VESSEL CROSSING FROM THE LEFT HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY...This is referring to a T type crossing not head on...head-on...Geez, just do what have done since been a kid walking on the sidewalk...turn to the right... This could have been really bad situation...at the speed the moron in the outgoing boat was travelling if he hit the rocks or his hull catches a rock under the water..that boat is going to hit the rocks...and within 1/4 of a second is gonna shatter, obliterate into 1000s of pieces ...doesn't matter if they collided or clipped the incoming guy or small roller or wave tosses the vessel 2-3 ft to the left towards the rocks..at that speed...whoever was on that vessel would be in a forever box right now and that is assuming could find all of the pieces...even worse is the vessel would have literally exploded into 1000s of pieces and very likely literally explode if it hit the rocks...whoever is fishing or even possibly walking on the otherside of the Northern Rocks would likely have had what would be like Napalm splattering all over them...the gas/oil/hydraulic fluid would be thrown through the air...igniting and whoever it engulfs or lands on is going to have a very bad day...no one on the boat would have survived... Thank goodness CAPTAIN KHAKI WAS NOT APPROACHING THE INLET WITH THIS MANIAC EXITING...or someone paddle boarding around the Northern breakwater... VERY VERY CLOSE TO BEING A MASSIVE DISASTER IMO... THE INCOMING CAPTAIN QUICK REACTIONS AND THROTTLE CONTROL DISCIPLINE SAVED LIVES IN THIS INCIDENT... WELL DONE INCOMING SWURVY CAPTAIN GUY...WELL DONE INDEED!!!

Surely, like any road, you travel on one side of the throughway - in this case, the channel ? What is absolutely clear, one of the boats was on the wrong side of the channel. Then when it comes to speed, seeing there is no limit, traveling on the correct side of the channel is of utmost importance. This would then also obligate jetski'ers to transit only, and get the hell out of the way, instead of stuffing around in the inlet for their amusement. Pontoon drivers are as big a menace as jetski'ers.
