While I don't have any statistics (theory only), I think the reason 410 is so hard to find is because of all the Taurus Judges in the market (and now the S&W Governor). As for pricing, amount of materials used is always a secondary consideration. Volume of sales is the determining factor, and the 410 is far less used than 12 guage (fewer shells sold = more cost per shell). Even before all the "fun and games" these past few years, 410 still cost more than other guages even back then. The third factor is "panic buying". In anticipation of future difficulties finding ammo many people bought lots of ammo. Remember, demand is one of the factors that help set price.

I use 303british brass .. fire formed it out in my 410... I reload that... No resizing required. I use a shot card on top and a bit of elmers white glug to hold card ... Work great... Has lasted many many firings without issues

Turns out you can use Matt's Bullets .41 cal hollow base wad cutters as perfect .410 slugs. Cheap and they fly perfect and straight with 16 grains of 300-MP powder. Give them a try. Just use a nitro card over the powder, a 1/2" fiber cushion wad and then as many nitro cards as needed to get the column height right for your hull.

Hey I found out that if you use a spent S&W 40 cal shell . Use thick paper or a vanilla folder and use the 40 and a hammer to punch out over shot cards. I use tweezers to get them out of the brass shell

Necessity is a mother of invention. If you don't have the tools to make your own for 410 rounds, just use the side of your drawer to finish the crimp.

No but you can use any size lead pellet you want for any lead shot load, all that matters is the total lead payload weight.

Banging upload mate, the .410 gauge is quite appealing. I'm very tempted to buy a mossberg hush power .410 (when I'm awarded my sgc), as I can shoot it in my back garden or a friends, since it is silenced

Hopefully my industry experience will help shed light on the shortages. Like a lot of rifle calibers, one of them I love (257 Roberts (AI)), manufacturers are putting the raw materials into higher demand products that will both sell faster and at a higher margin... 410, albeit easy to make etc, probably isn't as high of a demand as 12 and 20 gauge (the two most popular gauges in the US)... The same thing is happening with powders and primers. Ammo manufacturers can make way more money putting powder into a shell than they can in a canister for us reloaders... I predict the market will catch up with those gauges, like 9mm and .223 rem have, and we'll start seeing more obscure/obsolete cartridges come back in plenty... We've already started seeing it with 16 gauge and 28. Soon with 410 I bet... Soon.

I repacked some 410 rounds with .177 BB gun rounds. 3 triple odd buck. Some f bird shot. For some poor man's defense rounds. Seeing if you can reload a 410 with a 41 caliber bullet?

Only if it’s cylinder bore you can. A 41 caliber bullet, as in for a 41 magnum, with a copper jacket wouldnt squeeze down safely for anything except cylinder bore, maybe IC. But yes it can be done for sure.

@@scottshipley525 muzzleloading primers won’t work reliably in 410, the powders used for 410 loads are very slow burning and muzzleloading 209’s have half the power of a standard 209. Powder ignition would be hit and miss. Ballistic products have Cheddite 209’s in stock and they can be used in any shotshell with any powder. We’ve used thousands and have never had a failure. Component costs have very little to do with availability and prices. It really comes down to supply and demand. 12ga is cheaper, despite its higher component costs, because it is a popular gauge. This popularity means more manufacturers are out there making more of it and competing with each other. This increased supply and competition keeps prices lower than for something with lower demand, and thus fewer manufacturers, such as .410. If a manufacturer is at max capacity, why would they make more .410 when they can use all their available capacity for 12ga knowing that the market will soak it all up?

The demand for 410 is incredibly high right now, if you go to Facebook and look at any ammo manufactures posts, it’s full of people asking where all the 410 is. I seen a couple boxes of federal game loads recently and they wanted $35 a box. The $5 box of Winchester super targets are now $10.49 at Walmart. It’s crazy to see how high ammo has gotten and seems it’s just getting worse.

@@theshotgunscientists I get that it's high, but we are looking at comparative demand. The demand for 12ga far outstrips .410 by a wide margin. The sad reality is that the margins in ammo manufacture is not great, meaning that it is considerably harder to generate an ROI on adding new capacity and any new capacity that they can add takes a long time to get up and going. I know that the question that they are asking themselves is, "Sure, there are shortages now, but will we still expect to see the same demand in 5 to 10 years?" I don't know that there is a good answer to that, given that our current shortages are spillover effects from the pandemic, as opposed to organic market growth
