Love what you guys have done. For two radio people to take on this challenge is amazing. My Grandpa had a farm that he first tilled the prairie in 1906 in Central Canada. Everyone were farmers back then so U had to be tough. But to just step into it is amazing. My Grandfather built a home in 1915 with a handsaw and hammer and nail. Can U imagine! Raised six kids. Gramma had a huge garden and canned. They had no power, everything was by candle or fuel lamp. Coal stove. He decided to go big everything was paid for and Reeves steam got my Grandpa to break ground for 35 acre custom farm that CPR rail commissioned on their land for immigrants. Everything was great no drought and crops sold, but he bought the steam tractor on debt with huge compound interest and default fees if U missed a payment. He was hit with the worst drought ever in 1930s . The debt grew to over 40k with depressed land value of 3k. No income from the farm. He had two heart attacks but still worked in newly discovered oil fields as a Steam engineer on the oil rigs and the family moved into a skid shack, no insulation -50 in winter. They were tough. The bank tried to foreclose but no takers. Talk about STRESS! But the family held together with strong Christian values. The memories years later were so wonderful. God saw them through! In 1940 farmers were abandoning their farms. The Government realised they had to protect the farmers. They put into force the farm debt restructure act that adjusted all debt to appraised value and allowed the farmer to pay off the adjusted debt from farm receipts. After 10 years of severe. Drought it started to rain. The crops were amazing and in just three years Grandpa paid the adjusted debt off and he owned the farm free and clear. They did not lose the farm but thrived and bought more land. In 1955. Then after 50 years of wiry and hardship Grandpa passed from a severe heart attack. Today he would have been treated and healed. I said all this to say farming is a long term hard business but a beautiful family experience. Jesus said “Do not Worry” Have faith and pray and it will work out. Family is everything! Not money.

We always kept one bull to breed the young stock. We had one bull that liked to service the neighborhood, and easily jumped any fence. A ring was put in the nose and a chain ran back to his hind legs to slow him down. We watched him walk up to a fence, swing his head, so the chain would end up looped up over hi neck, then easily jumped the fence. He was sold shortly thereafter.

Shorter breading season is what my Grandfather always said was best. If you could get a 90 day season in, he would prefer check and cull any cow that wasn't pregnant. Of course he always had a BSE done on the bulls to make sure they made good breaders. Shorter breading season means a shorter birthing season. Which he said was always less work in the end. Anyway, awesome videos!!

If you end up running a smaller herd due to the drought, would it make any sense to keep a couple more steers than usual for the farm store? Just curious. You have talked about diversifying the ranch with the pork, chicken, and produce that you raise. It may not make sense; I’m curious about your thoughts. Thanks for what you and your family do to educate, entertain, and feed us. Have a great week!
