As a married person with my parents being the bad grandparents, every in-law issue is actually a spouse/partner issue. I know my parents are crazy. I am their connection to my nuclear family, so it is my responsibility to verbalize ours boundaries. If one of my parents said to us "hey, bring the kid over to my house so we can see him", I wouldn't expect my spouse to have to tell them no. It's my time to step in and say "No, you have a hoarder house with 7+ cats. We can meet at a public venue instead." The caller's husband should've stepped up and said "Mom, we talked about this yesterday. We wanted to have family time just us at the zoo. Maybe we can meet up for lunch, but you can go ahead and enjoy your solo zoo time and we're going to have a family day just the 3 of us." It is not the caller's job to manage HIS parents. Maybe it's the tism, but I don't understand how every adult child of crazy parents doesn't immediately understand this dynamic. Your parents are pushing boundaries and overbearing and you don't like it. Why subject your loved ones to the same toxic dynamic?
@falltowinter
@falltowinter Жыл бұрын
Yes. This is very important. My parents don't listen to me, but I am still the one who has to set the boundary with them initially - they listen to my partner, but I have to be the one to set the boundary so my parents cannot say that my partner is causing division or something like that. In the past, my partner has wanted to help and step in for me, but that led to my parents thinking that my partner was being controlling - we had to learn that if I set the boundaries initially and my partner then backs me up... that's just a partner being supportive and it's harder for them to spin that negatively. Honestly - I don't think they ever really thought my partner was being controlling - but if they pretend they feel that way it gives them an excuse to stomp the boundary - aka, "MY child doesn't actually agree to that boundary their spouse made for me so I don't have to follow it." They know that's not true, but they think it gives them plausible deniability. If you have boundary stomping parents, you have to think about how things are framed and what information is shared SO much more carefully than with normal people. It can be exhausting.

What’s crazy is using your codependent mother/mother in law to get your child care needs met and paying her dust lol. I totally understand crazy family but in this case she doesn’t seem crazy and overbearing, but needy and bad judgment because she’s not focused on self care. The husband’s not setting it straight because he knows he’s exploiting her generosity and prolly feels guilty but wants to save money. People, please do not use your unhealthy family members as a resource.
@a_o011

My solution in my immediate family has been me as a sibling be the voice of reason. My brother and I have overbearing parents. I don't give two poops about confrontation or creating chaos within the fam. My older brother is not confrontational. So when something happens or he wants to set a boundary I bring it up with examples and no direct affiliation to him of what my parents can and can't do as in laws. So if there's that sibling dynamic I say use it.

I can’t believe I didn’t think about how excited I am to see what she does with the rest of her career until I saw this comment! Because she’s just ICONIC! Maybe I never thought about the future because she just so embodies being so in the moment I can’t even think of outside the moment while thinking of her 😂

commenting because my roommate lost his key three times in one year: the 325$ is billed as the cost of replacing the locks on the door, a safety measure so that your lost key cant be used by a stranger to enter your room. telling them that your backpack was stolen will ensure you get charged for the lock replacement, lying that it fell somewhere unrecoverable is a slightly safer bet. many colleges also use a key logging system with a serial number printed on the key, so they can tell if the one you return at the end of the year is a copy. worth a shot but turning in a copy of the key at the end of the year may get you fined anyway. i really recommend taking your key and getting it copied the first day of class, then using the copy all year and keeping the original in a safe place. if you lose the copy, you still have the og so don’t have to worry about getting charged. please dont lose your key three times and have your poor roommate on the hook for paying for it😭

For the Mother in Law boundary thing - you also need to gauge if she'll stop giving free babysitting if you set boundaries, and if she does, could you afford that? Because if not, have your husband set gentle boundaries but largely just do not offer details. Like, "Hey! You can have a day off because we have the opportunity to take off from work and have time alone with our child(ren)!" If she asks what you plan to do with them just lie by omission - say you haven't set solid plans yet, but you're very excited to *spend time alone with your child(ren).* Reinforce that fact over and over again because she cannot take offense to it without sounding like an asshole, and also by reinstating that you don't get enough *time alone with your child(ren)* it makes it rude on her side to offer up plans that include her. She can't show up to plans she doesn't know about.

If MIL is a mentally healthy enough, you say hey can we talk about what happened at the zoo. It was an important day but I realize we didn't ask you if there were any special plans you had in mind. We appreciate you so much and this is such a gift for the baby that you can be here and help us. It's hard for us to miss out on so much time with our kid and need some time when it's just the 3 of and eventually the 4 of us. But that is about us not you. Because we don't want you to think it is about not wanting you around just about creating our own moments with babies. My mom want mentally healthy enough to listen to this so eventually shit went badly but it would have been the convo I would have wanted to have

Hi former RA here (did it cause I was poor and needed housing and food)! The reason it costs so much for the key situation is because housing is required to change the lock of the room for security reasons and make new sets of keys for that room. You might be able to finesse a new lock by breaking your roommates key into the lock cause you can blame the key quality for it… but it might backfire if they ask for your keys when giving out the new set of keys. Good luck!
@jules194
@jules194 Жыл бұрын
Not to discount what you said at all, but I'm wondering would it be more expensive if they broke the the key in the door, bc then they might have to replace even more of the door's lock/handle? Also for the caller, maybe it's less expensive to just tell them the truth because it's the end of the semester anyway? it's not like you lost it at the beginning of the semester so maybe you could tell them that (:

i know the soundboard pitches were mostly a bit but i'd seriously recommend the "oh-oh-ohhh-oh" sound effect from the show Big Time Rush-it played once every episode, typically after something surprising/problematic happened, and i think it would be a real hit with the younger audience who perhaps watched the show growing up

For the zoo story: guilt trip the grandma. Just say "well it isn't fair to the other grandparents if you're getting a whole extra day at the zoo, when we all met up yesterday! Also, you're getting to see her every workday, you're already clocking in so much quality time! You deserve a day off. Also, here's money to take our daughter to the zoo next time you're babysitting." But also Miles' comment of "why don't we meet up at lunch, we're going to the zoo now"(or however he phrased it) is a great one. Also also grandma should get paid something for her babysitting. That way you don't feel as guilty setting boundaries when she oversteps for feeling like she's 'owed' something.
