There are undoubtedly lots of arguments to be had, and tubs to thump. But the inescapable fact is that London's air pollution at street level is worse now than it has ever been. That is a proven scientific fact. What we do about it is where the debate begins. If we did nothing, and then in 20+ years time, the life expectancy of those living within a certain distance of the worst affected areas, dropped by 15+ years, then the outcry - why didn't we do something about it? - would begin........ It's a tough call. I'm just glad I Iive 250 miles North of London....... Whatever the solution ultimately is, it's going to cost money.......

@@Brian-om2hh Air pollution on the undergrouund is higher than above ground , there is evidence of this, and Khan ignores that.

Within London Khan put affected households as 10% but figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders shows 84% of cars in outer London comply with emissions standards, which means that at least 280,000 cars - or about one in six - do not. 1.5 million are affected beyond London. So the effects are widespread and the gains are postulated rather than observable from actual cause of death data. Politicians are causing millions of people to spend thousand to ten thousands of pounds for something with no observable benefit.

There should be INCENTIVES to keep OLD cars on the road. Replacing ANY vehicle (electric / ULEZ complaint or not) is far more damaging to the planet than just keeping your old car running.

The camera system will be used for a million and one charges once installed. I expect them start morphing it into road charging system by tolling congested roads at peak hours next. Hackney is starting a road charging trial soon.

I don't honestly think that's the aim Derek, because frankly the Government would lose *way* too much in tax revenue. They rake in £35 billion per year from the motorist now, so if most of that vanished then what other taxes would need to rise to recoup the lost revenue? Then there's the issue of over a million jobs lost if private car ownership disappears. For a start, 800'000 jobs would be lost in UK car manufacturing alone, then there'd be the jobs lost in car dealerships, car repair workshops, oil refineries, petrol stations, petrol tanker deliveries, car body repair shops, tyre fitting depots, Halfords, Local Authority road maintenance crews etc etc....How would any of this be of any advantage or benefit to the Government or it's finances? And with respect, the cost of an EV is hardly a factor Derek. After all, what's the price difference between a new fully electric MG4 at £28k, and a new mid spec petrol Astra, Focus or Golf at £28k? Plus there are used EV's. No difference there between a £6k used EV or a £6k used petrol car either.......Not really wishing to get political here, but you may care to notice that much of the Eurozone also has high inflation, and is teetering on the brink of recession.......Unemployment in the UK is low, and job vacancies are plentiful...... If you truly feel the UK is now a 3rd World nation, then what's keeping you here? Sorry, but I had to ask......

I live just outside London - I’m actually tempted to flog my “compliant” car why the price is strong and finding a diesel in really nice condition (thinking an E320CDI or 335d coupe). You’re going to be charged to drive in London whatever you drive before long at all if he gets away with this anyway.

I totally agree. My 2014 C200 diesel isn't ulez compliant. Having covered only 61k miles is less than half way through it's potential lifespan. To scrap it now would be madness and not environmentally sound. With it's dpf, egr and catalytic converter it's also already exceptionally clean and according to the V5 actually emits less NOX than some similar sized petrol equivalents.

The existing ULEZ zone isn't working because it's difficult to improve on the already good air quality in these zones. This "toxic air" lie is simply a way to justify the massive investment in ANPR technology which will ultimately be used for pay-per-mile road pricing. The greatest risk to health in London is regularly using the tube network.

Can't see them moving from Euro 6 anytime soon. Almost all work vans are still running diesel. Moving petrol from Euro 4 to 5 will hardly make any difference to emissions like for like. It would have obviously likely reduce them due to less cars being on the roads. Also worth mentioning that some cars were Euro 6 well before 2015 and it will automatically say you are not compliant. You need to get them to add your car to the list.

@gavjlewis
@gavjlewis Жыл бұрын
@@Brian-om2hh Well I guess they will move to Euro 7 diesel at some point, but it won't likely be until 2035 or something before that standard is required for ULEZ zones. They will probably move to Euro 6 petrol at the same time. So vans will be less than 10 years old (along with very few diesel cars) and petrol cars less than 20 years. Seems reasonable.
@chevchelios8582
@chevchelios8582 Жыл бұрын
There are LB’s saying they want all diesels off their roads soon and are starting the pit extortionate parking etc. TfL have listed 2025/26 as a target date for road charging too. Even a Euro 6 isn’t going to last long before being charged.
@gavjlewis
@gavjlewis Жыл бұрын
@@chevchelios8582 Well yes I'm sure at some point we will get a congestion+emissions based charge. But it doesn't single anybody out. In Norway for example it applies to everyone who travels around Oslo. £2 for a diesel car down to about 80p for an electric car (or less if you live in the outer zone already). So you are essentially paying £1.20 pollution tax because you drive a diesel. Well that's much cheaper than £12.50 here. Besides TFL love diesel. They have have 9000 diesel buses and are still replacing them with diesel hybrid versions and will be until at least 2027. TFL are in dream land if they think they will get to 80% public transport use by 2041. Even if it was free to use they wouldn't get to those levels. First thing they will have to do it automate buses, trains and the tube because you can't have strikes or people off sick as it will all grind to a standstill. Then it will have to be free as there will be nobody to police the payment. The only real way to reduce car usage is to stop selling cars. Maybe that's the plan. Get everybody into electric cars and then just stop selling them. Slowly you reduce car usage by there not being as many cars to drive.

The CONservatives, in the form of Boris Johnson as London Mayor, first introduced plans for Ulez in 2015. The CONservatives, in the form of Grant Shapps as Transport Secretary, Boris Johnson as PM, and Rishi Sunak as Chancellor, forced Mayor Khan to extend Ulez, by writing a letter to Khan in May 2020, demanding he extends Ulez as a condition for funding TfL. Rishi Sunak as Chancellor, Boris Johnson as PM, and Grant Shapps as Transport Secretary, designed, implemented and funded policies for Active Travel, which released £millions to local councils that implemented Central Tory policies for traffic restrictions across the UK. All roads lead back to Central Tory MPs.

How does the ULEZ report indicate the saving of 4000 lives in London due to the lower emissions when there is only one recent case of a death with the cause given as pollution? Furthermore after lower emissions are achieved you will not find any specific person who has been saved as a result. So the science supporting ULEZ is undemonstrable. The 4000 is based on a model using Cox's proportional hazard model. In this, for respiratory lung disease for example, all the factors affecting the disease are listed and regression analysis performed. However you have to know all the factors and you need data for the factors you include. Without this knowledge then the limited set of factors you include may appear more important than they really are. Also you assume proportionality, a necessary simplification. People need to understand the difference between data and mathematical modelling. Getting millions of people to spend thousands of pounds prematurely for a benefit that can never be demonstrated by actual data is very silly.
