Thankfully I've worked at a Platelayer on the tube for the past 10 years Those flashing things you can see on the District line that is closed indicate the defined posession limits. One is Flashing red which indicates you are Entering the worksite, and the other (Flashing yellow) indicates you are Entering Possession, followed by detonators. Fun fact that Rail Gap indicator on approach to Ravenscourt Park that you pointed out is right by the Ravenscourt Park Substation. So would in this case be known by Pway works at a Substation Gap or Sub Gap. 👍 The person providing protection for us on the track During Engineering Hours has to test the next section after the sub gaps is off if we were to say access the track from Hammersmith and our work was on the other side of Ravenscourt Park

When engineering possessions are set up, do they place anything that will short out the traction supply to guard against anyone screwing up and turning the traction current back on?
@Bvetube101
@Bvetube101 Ай бұрын
@@leeroberts1192 Yes, the Person Providing protection on a posession worksite will work with other PWTs to place short circuit devices on the positive and negative rails to prevent re-energisation. These are usually found at the possession limit boards (which I've indicated already). I do believe I have seen these devices also stored in the driver's cab of LU stock (Dale can correct me if there isn't on the 73ts) that drivers can use to short out the conductor rails in the event of an evacuation at track level, but is very rare indeed since the line controller will ensure traction current is off if such events happen. Hope this answers your question 😊

The headlights are really only marker lights so some poor sod on the track would see what's coming to collect him. If I recall, Dale or another Tube driver on a different channel said they did trial bright lights like headlights on an automobile, but those were roundly disliked and done away with. Cheers from Colorado, USA!

Thank you for another different video - including the illuminated RGI (rail gap indicator) on the adjacent District line, which isn't something we'd get to see too often. On that topic, if the traction current was discharged on the District line in the vicinity of the Hammersmith underpass/tunnel, then I believe that'd explain why the lights are illuminated in that area - i.e. they're most likely to be working as designed rather than there being a fault. (The discharge of traction current causes the tunnel lighting to turn on automatically - that's my understanding, anyway.) I'm now intrigued to discover the issue you mentioned in relation to the middle platform at Cockfosters... hopefully, it's something you'll be able to cover fairly soon! Enjoy your trip to NYC with your nephew - and have fun shopping!
@calvinhenry-cotnam9097
@calvinhenry-cotnam9097 Ай бұрын
As Dale mentioned, an illuminated RGI indicates that traction power may not be present on the track ahead (track in rear of the RGI). Power off is the likely cause, but not the only one. For example, it could be a failed COLR (current on line relay). A COLR is energized by the traction power and if the power is off, it drops and it's contacts will illuminate the RGI and may do other things (possibly like illuminating tunnel lighting - not saying that is the case, just that it could be done).
@principalsignal
@principalsignal Ай бұрын
For information, COLRs generally aren't used for the illumination of tunnel lighting; that function is provided by other means. COLRs and RGIs are signalling assets, whereas tunnel lighting is not, hence the difference - i.e. COLRs are used for the illumination of RGIs and any repeating RGIs, etc., as you mentioned. I don't believe I was challenging or contradicting what Dale said in his commentary; I was merely trying to point out the most likely reason that the lights were illuminated and that, therefore, they are unlikely to have been faulty. My remarks are based on many years' experience as a professional signalling design engineer with LU, including a number of years in the role of Principal Engineer as well as having held track certification at the level of SPC (Site Person in Charge) at one time - though I certainly don't claim to know everything... but, of course, nobody is an expert in everything 😊
@calvinhenry-cotnam9097
@calvinhenry-cotnam9097 Ай бұрын
@@principalsignal true. Sorry if I sounded like I implied you were contradicting what Dale said, I was just attempting to fill in a few blanks, like why an RGI may be lit while traction power might still be live. I have not heard of or seen any drawings of lighting being controlled by a COLR, but couldn't say for sure that it could never be done, even if indirectly. My experience is limited to training and maintenance manual writing for the wayside equipment used on the 4LM project (the sub-surface lines that use S-stock trains). Incidentally on 4LM, COLR contacts provide input to the CBTC system which in turn drives outputs that illuminate RGIs. So, RGI operation is indirectly from COLRs via software.
@principalsignal
@principalsignal Ай бұрын
@@calvinhenry-cotnam9097 It's all good, and there's really no need for an apology - I think we're on the same page, albeit from slightly different viewpoints. I suspect that when I referred to the lights being on on the area, you may have taken it that I meant the RGI as opposed to the tunnel-type lighting... I should have been clearer! As I haven't been involved in 4LM, which was in its early stages when I left LU, I wasn't aware that the RGIs are an output from the CBTC system (though it makes good sense, at least to ensure that they are in correspondence) but, of course, I appreciate that the COLR status is needed as an input in order to control trains according to the apparent status of the traction current for the section(s) in advance. Anyway, many thanks for that information - it's appreciated.

@LUAu101 Ай бұрын
On the main line a Possession Limit Board (PLB) consists of a stop board (red octagon exactly like a stop sign on the roads) with a single flashing red light and does indicate the start/end of a possession. Work-Site Marker Boards (WSMBs) are double-sided. They have two flashing yellow lights on one side and two flashing red lights on the other. Flashing red lights indicate the start of a work site and flashing yellow lights indicate the end of a worksite. Obviously the start of a worksite in one direction is the end of the worksite in the other direction and vice versa. Obviously in a possession movements can take place in either direction.

I really don’t know how you do it daily for 7 days a week going from Peterborough and in to London and getting home at 3am then only getting like 5 or less hours asleep then go back out again to work if I was doing that I would be finding a house a lot closer or joining a normal train company what does from Peterborough et 😂
