Lopunny-Line Solo Challenge - Pokemon Platinum

Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, or save states
4. No movepool evasion-boosting moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- I make no attempt to have the exact same rule details between generations.
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- Evasion boosting is allowed if the move is not obtained from the Pokemon’s movepool. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed.
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1 & 4, banned in gen2, and allowed only to bypass terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- Items obtained with the ability Pickup can only be used if the starter obtained them
-- The footage is sped up & slowed down to match the pace of my narration

At least on the Buneary end, the friendship and frustration is a reference to how reserved and distrustful bunnies are as pets, and the happiness evo is how rewarding it is to go through the work to earn that trust.

26:15 Weird thing about Jump Kick and High Jump Kick: The recoil mechanic for these moves changed every single generation for the first five generations. When missing one of these moves, in gen 1, you take a whopping 1HP of damage. In gen 2, you take 1/8th of damage you would have dealt. In gen 3, it was increased to 1/2 the damage dealt. In gen 4, it largely stays the same, but they added the ability to crash and take recoil if the move is used against a ghost type, in which case, you to take damage equal to half of the target's maximum HP. In gen 5, it was changed to always be 1/2 of the user's maximum HP, in every situation, which is the effect it has continued to have ever since. edited for initially misreading the gen 4 effect.

Scott, have you considered buying the Metronome item instead of the Silk Scarf? You can also buy it from the game corner for the same price as the Silk Scarf, 1000 coins. It takes time for it to ramp up compared to the Silk Scarf, but if you're only spamming the same move and aren't potentially needing ranges early on, and if you're going to use the same move more than 3 times in a row (it becomes equal at 3, and lower only on 1 and 2 when compared to the Silk Scarf), the damage output becomes greater with the Metronome. Sure it resets when you change your move in battle (or miss), but the increase in power otherwise can reach as high as 2x, as opposed to the fixed 1.2x that the Silk Scarf has.

@@bobosmith101 But if you're getting a guaranteed OHKO on at least one of the first two without the item boost (or a guaranteed 2HKO on the first mon), what difference would it make? The idea behind this would be to get a further damage push on larger teams that the type boosting items can't provide due to their fixed boost. It would also decrease move menuing since you lower the amount of times you'd have to move the cursor in the event you select a different move. This would be because the Metronome would incentivize you to keep the same move selected due to the rate at which the power ramps up. In the event you'd need to hit 2x power (Bertha), you would effectively hit resists as if you were hitting them normally without a boost. Yes the damage effectively becomes equal only after 3 turns of using the same move, but if you're needing that 4th turn in battle then your boost in power is suddenly up to 60%, whereas the Silk Scarf keeps you stuck at 20%. There were fights in this run in particular where having the Metronome would have made a material difference. Notably, the Gyarados against Cyrus 3 would've been taken out in 1 hit since the item boost would've been up to 40% with Return. And the Luxray would've gone down in 1 hit as well, assuming no activation from Static on the Raichu. In both cases, it just barely didn't KO with Silk Scarf and its 20% boost. The only way this outcome would change would be if the Houndoom somehow didn't go down in 1 hit with no boost.

@@Lotus_RT This sounds like a rollout situation, and Scott isn't very fond of that move due to how constricting it is. Powerful, yes, but only if the attack chain isn't interrupted. This would be absolutely broken though on a pokemon with the No-Guard ability, ensuring it will never miss. Imagine a No-Guard fighting type with dynamic punch holding a metronome. Absolute carnage.

I remember back when i played gen 4, i didn't know how powerful Return could be. I used to think that friendship goes from 0 to 100 and it would have at best 100 power. So instead of using it, i just give Lopunny Strenght as a main normal attack and Giga Impact for a finishing move. Ever since i started watching your series, i now undestand that Return is a pretty good move, even for non-Normal types.

11:17 Something else to note about using Grass Knot against Fantina too, is that since it deals weight-based damage, and both Haunter and Mismagius are under 10 kg, it would only have a base power of 20, so it would be even worse than just Haunter resisting the move, it's straight up a waste of time. Guess you could say it was a lot of foresight to keep foresight. 20:55 Something to keep in mind about Aftermath is that it only deals 25% of attacker's max HP as damage if the KO was dealt by a contact move. Special attackers will have no issue against that Driftblim or other Aftermath users, if there are any other notable ones.

Bunneary and Lopunny've always been fun pokemon to run Gen4 with, really cool to see how they performed alone. Though this has gotten me curious about one of the other notable "female" pokemon the Internet loves, and how it compares with its other evolution, so if you could, I'd love to eventually see a Platinum VS of Snorunt into Glalie and Froslass! I'd be interested to see a comparison of evolving over time like you approached this vs simply investing the time to run back and forth enough to have lopunny for the first gym. At 4 x speed my guess is this would be roughly a 5 min time loss at first but I'm sure you'd make that ground up through the rest of the playthrough. + return would be max BP from the start.

As someone who tends to friendship evolve at the first opportunity, it's nowhere close to 5 min. For a "normal" base 70 friendship pokemon it takes about an hour (at 1x speed admittedly) before you get the bike, and for buneary you have to factor in the extra 70 friendship from base 0. I could see it easily being a 20 minute time investment, and that seems hard to make up

The implication is a Tsundere. Buneary is the Tsun, Lopunny is the Dere. Goes from angry to happy. Also, Lopunny is the only pokemon to learn Return naturally, and Buneary is the only one to learn Frustration naturally.

I always thought using frustration was bad because it meant the pokemon didn't like you and as a kid I thought using it would prevent the pokemon from becoming friendly. Brilliant choice of Pokémon considering the day and I love the depiction on the negative friendship Buneary and the max friendship Lopunny for the thumbnail. 0:49 - Lopunny was very... unsubtle about it's influence. To think they would get even more daring with the likes of Tsareena later on. Though Lopunny would also get more daring with it's Mega Evolution and it's... ripped stockings. 1:58 - I feel it'd be more befitting if it started off with Frustration but I suppose that would also be pretty busted when encountering a wild one so early on in the game. Nice choice of the eventual Fighting type Chimchar as the rival Pokémon. 5:55 - Really? Amazing they were able to keep track of such a factor along with everything else. An interesting bit of trivia that I never knew about. 9:12 - I was expecting that early crit against you to prevent a first time but you just managed to Frustrate your way through Roark here. Well done, Scott and Princess! 10:31 - A very purposeful pause to build up the suspense here I see. So nice to go up to Mars with a Fighting type attack at the ready. 15:34 - To be fair, Return makes its way into most of your videos. Here, it at least befits the Pokémon perfectly. 20:26 - To be fair, it’s not much of a detour to get that Fist Plate; plus you raised your Friendship along the way. Interesting to hear you didn’t need it when you still have Byron and his Steel types to face. 22:34 - Diggersby though! I actually rather like Diggersby and how much it contrasts with Lopunny in design, despite both being rabbits. Shame the Pokémon was intentionally nerfed because it’s Hidden Ability is Huge Power. 27:00 - Recoil damage breaks Substitute; good to learn. It is really surprising that you didn’t go with the Fist Plate for this battle but also lucky in this crash landing incident. 30:44 - You do remember to equip the Ghost attack increasing Spell Tag though, redeeming your mistake with the lack of the Fist Plate from before. 33:17 - Funny enough, my younger brother also taught his Lopunny Ice Beam so she could slay dragons. It seems oddly iconic to the Pokémon given Dawn’s Buneary started off with Ice Beam. 34:14 - “Hey”… what? A funny little inclusion but I’m not sure why it was done. 36:34 - Three back-to-back Fighting type move knowing Pokémon in a row. Yeah, that is quite a challenge to face. 40:05 - Princess pulling through with her Critical striking Jump Kicks. 42:52 - Cynthia’s not playing around here; she heard your comment about the dumb CPU from before. 44:52 - B Rank for Lopunny? I love the video. I love using the buneary line when I go through platinum too. A tip for if you do this run again. You can get shards and heart scales for the elemental punches and mirror coat. Those always helped me when I add a lopunny to the team

Buneary & Lopunny have been my favorite Pokémon since I was a little gay boy playing Diamond for the first time. They are just so adorable & rabbits are my favorite animals ever. I know it is coming, but i'm ready for Gen 5. It is going to be the longest playthrough since it is story driven, but the difference between Black/White and Black2/White 2 makes it feel complete. It is also the First Gen that makes the True rival feel like Blue from Red and Blue.

Now, the starters aren't that memorable, but they do give you some strong team players. The amount of strong Ou and UU pokemon in singles and the amount that are stupid strong in VGC will make your head spin came from gen 5.

Saturn is a guy. If you ever have any need for them/have time for them then the move tutor moves obtained via shards can be really good, for example fire/ice/thunder punch are amazing on Lopunny but that depends on if you can get the shards easily without grinding since you try to do these runs fast.

In a second playthrough, I wonder if you could push through gym 1 at level 18 or so if you just didn't get crit on (which I think is around a 50% chance throughout the battle). Frustration just being a bit more powerful with less happiness there could help a little.

I'm wondering if Bunneary would have benefited from blackout training against Gardenia (potentially Roark but less likely). Mostly since you gain slightly more friendship by entering the fight then you lose by fainting. Also that trainer boosted exp. Not sure if it would save time at the end of the day though.

I feel like substitute could/should potentially join double team for banned moves in platinum, the ai will always spam status moves into the sub allowing you to set up as much as you want in a lot of important fights which is just incredibly broken and solves way too many fights for a move that almost every pokemon can learn

Not sure if it's also the case in Platinum, but in Diamond and Pearl there's a bug when using any of the bitter herb healing items in battle.The friendship reduction can underflow all the way to max if used in battle. I've used it to go all the way from 0 friendship to max friendship with Buneary, since it starts with 0.

Looking at that moveset for Barry made me think of something: rock type pokemon are likely going to be brutal in this game. Grass knot will do massive damage since rock types are mostly heavy, so Gardenia will be tough. Wake starts off with Intimidate and is a hard fight to begin with so he’ll be tough. Sure, all of Cyrus’s pokemon are weak to rock moves so you don’t spam candies there, but all of Barry’s pokemon at the league (with the exception of Rapidash for the non-Infernape teams) have rock coverage. You probably use some candies before Wake so they can’t be too overleveled. Then there’s Bertha and 4 of Cynthia’s pokemon all have coverage for rock types. I’m looking forward to the eventual Cranidos video

So I once did a Lopunny run in X/Y (giving it the mega stone for lopunny at start because I wanted to be able to mega it and didn't know where that stone was normally) My move set basically the entire game was return, hi jump kick and for a while I had forsight for ghost coverage. Then when I got the ability to Mega that became ghost coverage since Mega Lopunny has Scrappy. Turns out ghost is the only way that normal + fighting type moves can't hit for at least neutral damage. Was funny to do.

Regarding the Drifblim fight (foresight plus return vs shockwave) I think the calcs are a push individually based on damage. A 60 power non stab, super effective move given the SA and SD stats in this situation comes out to more or less 1 extra point of non crit damage. But obviously it doesn't require the foresight set up. Because the attack formula is so complex I won't make sweeping statements. But assuming a pokemon has relatively balanced D and SD, this bunnearys special attack is roughly good enough to be as good as a resisted stab attack Lots of caveats on that but this sample makes me want to try and test out a generalized rule of thumb of when it's OK to have coverage that uses a worse attack stat and when it's better to just stick with brute force. I'm sure others have done it but I might find a way to test this sort of thing for my own entertainment

Like if I can say "as long as your SA is about 75% as high as your A, coverage for the non stab super effective moves is more useful than not" just so I don't waste my time in nuzlockes with moves that aren't effective without needing to do Calcs every fight

When I ever (read, always) caught a Buneary, I would ignore battling and just run back and forth on a long stretch of road to gain the, then uncapped, Foot Step Happiness boost. Every four steps, either you gain a point or you have a 50% chance to gain a point. Can't remember how it went in Gen IV. Either way, I did that so that the resulting Lopunny could evolve before or right at 13 to gain Return super early.
