This makes sense. The only pokémon I consistently struggled with when fighting Cynthia in DPPT was her Milotic. Garchomp was never an issue because after (at the time) 10 years of pokémon experience, you learn that not bringing at least one ice move into the league is basically suicide. Milotic is scary though. I'm not the least bit surprised with its performance.

For a while now, I've been interested in seeing a race of Gyarados vs. Milotic: they're actually rivals, having the same stat values, just shuffled. I'd love to see how they do against each other in Hoenn, though there's no rush, obviously.

Fun fact, in double battles, if you knock out an opponents Pokémon with a move like Surf (like how you knocked out Solrock) when it hits the other Pokémon the power is no longer divided and the second opponent gets hit with the full power. Tidbit I learned from competitive doubles back in the day.

I started watching your content around 2 or so Yeats ago when you had less than 10k subs and your content has soared since then, your love and dedication to what you do always shows. You and Jrose are amongst the best of these challenge videos, and I appreciate the differences you have in your content and the fact that you show follow up, more optimized runs after the fact. 95*2 = 190 70*3 = 210 Means two ice beams only deal 10% less than three HP Electrics vs Kingdra. With the extra freeze chance and the chance for high rolls, it's definitely worth it since it's possible that Ice Beam could two shot when HP Electric looks like a three-hit.

I'm normally here on your Emerald videos to give advice, but I have nothing to add. Not only was Milotic really strong, but your routing was excellent and I didn't see any mistakes in battles that you didn't point out yourself immediately. I liked the way you handled your moveset especially. Going back to buy Ice Beam a second time.e, and the way you used Heart Scales this time around shows your growth since your early generation 3 videos, since you're not only remembering these things are here, but making strategic decisions around them. Good job, this video was a joy to watch.

Yeah, in the last two months I feel like my play in both gen2 and gen3 has got much better. Skill acquisition is a weird thing. For me, it always feels like I plateau for a long period of time (4-6 months) and then all of a sudden all the growth takes place over a 2-3 week period and I look back and wonder what happened.

Very impressive run, Milotic's massive special defense and the standard great Ice/Water coverage really carried it hard. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if it got a better time than Rayquaza even after a 2nd run for both, there's clearly still room for optimization here, although Rayquaza obviously has more so that's at least debatable. The big thing though is I'm glad to hear about your voice! Good that its taken care of and you can make videos at the rate you want to again.

The real time to beat is undoubtedly going to be Kyogre. Compared to Milotic, it has the same typing and similar moves, but even higher stats (especially SP ATK), free Rain and access to Thunder. I don't think there's an encounter in the game that can really threaten it. The only downside is the slow growth rate, but even then it should be able to brute-force basically everything with tactical application of Rare Candies. I wouldn't be surprised if it can finish up under 1:50 on a first attempt, and will likely be ten minutes ahead of literally everything else. Mewtwo had Poochyena problems, Rayquaza had ice vulnerability and some awkward early moves, Groudon will be strong but Sun does so much less for it than Rain does for Kyogre, Deoxys is very fragile, Ho-oh and Lugia have to wait until level 22 to learn an attacking move, Tyranitar is slow and fears Brawly, Salamence has similar issues to Rayquaza, and Dragonite has them worse with its early movepool...

I remember being upset I could never obtain this Pokémon when this game first came out. I was 8 years old. 19 years later in the summer of 2022 I hunted for a Feebas and I found the spot in my Sapphire copy. You bet I caught as many as I could until they stopped spawning in that location. Hi Scott, I haven't commented on this channel for years but I would like to say, I have always loved your Pokemon Challenge Runs along with MahDryBread and Jrose11. Them and you, inspired me to do my own Pokemon Challenge Runs and I just want to say keep up the good work and I have loved Pokemon since I was 3 years old and my favourites are Fire Red and Emerald. Those games were a huge part of my childhood and thanks to you three, I started to play them again ages ago and doing solo and random challenge runs in updated, quality of life styled rom hacks of the games, so I can keep up to date with the modern, newly released games and still play the regular vanilla game with slight changes to them.

One small piece of solace for your eventual Slugma playthrough is that at least it isn't part Rock yet. Fire on its own is a pretty solid defensive typing (outside of Gen 1), even before the introduction of the Fairy type. Slugma still has a myriad of issues of course, but at least it doesn't have double weaknesses to two of the most common and potent offensive types in the game (especially in Hoenn, where there is infamously "too much water.")

Also, I am glad that you've mentioned doing a solo playthrough with Gardevoir since it is my favorite Pokemon so I am very much looking forward to it! Although I do not expect it to be very good thanks to its Slow growth rate. In any case, I am still looking forward to the playthrough and seeing how my favorite Pokemon performs in your hands!

I can't wait to see Platinum runs, Cynthia's triple threat of Milotic, Garchomp, and Lucario I reckon are gonna be nightmares for some runs based on the type coverage needed and how together they're a mix of special attack, physical attack and tankiness. Her Garchomp is rightfully iconic but the one-two of the Milotic into the Garchomp was devastating back in the day.

This run is interesting because it looks like there are a ton of spots it could be optimized. With the erratic growth rate, it might be better to use more rare candies earlier, since there's less reward for saving them. Water types also feel really strong in emerald. They have a good matchup vs Roxanne, Flannery, Tate/Liza, and Steven, have ice moves to deal with Drake, and don't really have any bad matchups against any of the gym leaders in the game. The matchup vs Wattson isn't even that bad because water hits magneton for neutral damage, which completely hardwalls a lot of pokemon. I was expecting Milotic to do pretty well because of all this, but I'm gonna guess other water types will also do pretty well in this game for similar reasons.

But then one day, a BEEG space baby was catching feebas and naming them after her members, and then decided to evolve the weakest one. I was the second feebas, and also the weakest, and thus became her 1 Mylotic. Since then it's had a place in my heart as one of my favorite water types, behind Lapras and Dewgong

I wonder if for the erratic growth rate should the rare candy usage change? Normally it’s clear that rare candies should be used as late as possible. But since the growth rate experience is so wonky maybe you should be using rare candies as soon as you pick them up. I haven’t done the math, but just a thought

Milotic is the gen 3 Gyarados in a sense. It's over powered, and has a great ability with some incredible stats to back it up ,on the defensive department. Marvel scale is great ability, and I think that you could have used it more on early game, especially against Brawly. Because I think that you'll that extra defense boost to outlast his attcks . With marvel scale that could be possible in theory. Because once Milotic is inflicted with status, it's defence is increasing by 50%. You can poison it by fighting wurmples or Roselias that could poison Milotic in order to activate this ability.😁 By the way ,the art for Milotic for this video was really beautiful. It captures the essence of the beauty of that Pokémon. 😊 I really like how you put a lot of thought to these tiny details. Well done.😄

I think you might find that medium-slow isn't as much of an advantage in Emerald as it is in yellow. Yellow version the final level is generally much lower due to being a shorter game. In Emerald, there's more time spent in the mid and late games which might end up giving fast and erratic pokemon the advantage in this version. I'm sure you're pretty excited to see how this pans out 😁

Also, u may want to consider like swagger for early game like grovyle battle with Brendan 3. Milotic is actually a really good Pokemon, but has historically been one of the hardest Pokemon to obtain in the games. Feebas in third generation can only appear on certain tiles based on your trainer id. I do like using it in battle though.

One to adjust Milotics's base stats. Everything seems great outside of that 60 Attack, 79 Defense and 81 Speed. Would change: Attack to 70, Defense to 90, and Speed to 85.

Milo was so hard to get in gen 3. I'm glad ORAS changed this to a 5% encounter on whatever route it was on.

I never used a Milotic, didn't have the patience to get a feebas and make it pretty. Fun to see its potential, but I still resent its evolution requirements! When I completed the pokedex in X/Y, I just traded for the milotic. XD

Milotic is very good at what it does, but it can only do that. It’s begging for a secondary typing. It desperately needs coverage, but even in newer Gens it only gets some Physical coverage.

So when it comes to comparing EXP groups, I think total EXP is the best metric to do so. Even if you're using less EXP to get to the next level, if you're behind on total EXP you'll still just be a lower level, so with that in mind its time to look at Erratic and how it compares. Erratic is slower than the Slow growth rate all the way until Level 38. It's slower than the Fluctuating growth rate until 46 and is exactly on par with Medium Fast at Level 50, both requiring the same amount of EXP. It's slower than Medium Slow until 55 and slower than Fast until level 71, where they both require the exact same amount of EXP again. What this largely means is that the Erratic growth rate is really bad in the early to early-mid game, and only starts beginning to outpace the other growth rates past level 50, which is pretty late into a run. I think Milotic just benefits from being a really solid Pokemon overall with good stats, typing, and movepool. Ninjask has the Erratic growth rate so uh. Be prepared for that one! Also fun fact: while the exp needed to get to the next level grows in a pretty stable fashion for the original 4 growth rates, Erratic and Fluctuating are named that because they actually have strange curves. It's not very noticeable with Erratic, but towards the back end of the curve, Fluctuating has levels that jump up and down by thousands of EXP. For example, at Level 70, it needs 19,980 EXP to get to 71, then 28,017 EXP to get to Level 72, and then it drops backdown to 21,446 EXP to get to Level 73! It's really weird! During the final few levels, the differences between the peaks and valleys is almost 20,000 EXP!

Milotic did really good though, and the fact that it powered through its honestly kind of detrimental growth rate is a real testament to just how good this Pokemon is. But I also don't want to forget the better play too! Eventually I think Emerald will have a period much like Crystal where times across the board start to fall as you get better and better. So while Milotic is sub 2 hours, I definitely doubt its going to be the only one, or one of a few, for very long!

For those interested, here are the comparisons for Fluctuating too: Faster than Medium Slow Until: Level 21 Faster than Fast Until: Level 26 Faster than Medium Fast Until: Level 38 Faster than Slow Until: Level 62 Faster than Erratic Until: Level 46 Hilariously this growth rate is so weird there's also a brief moment at Level 11 where Medium Slow is faster by 3 EXP, and then becomes slower again. Really just a bizarre EXP curve.
