a lovely rendition. I love the dark timbres of instruments and voices here. It perfectly recalls the image of the boatload of old books sinking into the wild seas around Ireland.

Lorcan I cannot thank you and your colleagues enough. I discovered these pieces during the lockdown. I spent a great deal of time in the back yard building a earthen mound, maybe a passage tomb eventually. I listened to your songs here for... what felt like... years. As I worked with the mud and the clay I could feel my heart beating faster and faster. I want to come home to the isles.

This is an extraordinary beautiful rendering of Amhran na Leabhair. This interpretation has resonances of times past, ancient times, early celtic monks and the seas and wild life around Scilg Michael but possibly also more distant seas and lands like the middle east and the Coptic tradition. Lorcan, Daire and Sean have created something very special and memorable.

☘️🦋ヽ♡`♪`༄◦✧`💖 WORDS: Tomás Rua Ó Súilleabháin (1785-1848) MUSIC: Trad. Arr. Tim Dennehy For a brief biographical note on the poet please check song number three, 'Maidin Bhog Álainn'. Tomás Rua, schoolteacher and poet had been transferred from Derrynane to Portmagee. He placed his huge and valuable library of books - both printed and in manuscript form, all leather bound - and his clothes on a boat which was travelling from Derrynane Bay to Valentia Harbour. He himself travelled by road. Unfortunately the boat overturned near Carraig Eibhlín Ní Rathaille just outside Derrynane Bay and his priceless library was lost. 'Amhrán na Leabhar' also known as 'Cuan Bhéil Inse' was his poetic response and is probably his best known song which is also very popular with pipers as a slow air. Go Cuan Bhéil Inse casadh mé Cois Góilín aoibhinn Dairbhre Mar a seoltar flít na farraige Thar sáile i gcéin. I Portmagee do stadas seal, Faoi thuairim intinn maitheasa D'fhonn bheith sealad eatarthu Mar mháistir léinn. Is gearr gur chuala an eachtara Ag cách mo léan! Mo chiach, mo chumha is m'atuirse! Mé im iarsma dubhach ag ainnise Is mé síoraí 'déanamh marana, Ar mo chás bhocht féin! Mo chuid éadaigh chumhdaigh scaipithe, Bhí déanta cumtha, ceapaithe, Is do thriaill thar thriúcha Banban Mar bhláth faoi mo dhéin. Iad bheith imithe san fharraige Ar bharr an scéil, Is a thuilleadh acu sa lasair Is mé go támhach trém néal; Ba thrua le cách ar maidin mé Go buartha, cásmhar, ceasnaithe, Is an fuacht a chráigh im bhalla mé Gan snáth ón spéir! In March 2023, when I came back from work, I parked my car in the parking lot in front of my house. It was late evening, at night actually. Seagulls were flying above my head, but they were flying differently, these seagulls were screaming and flocking above me. I don't know why but I thought about the island of Skellig Michael. Then a huge desire to see this Island was born. The next evening I drew what I saw, seagulls flying in the night sky. Planning a trip to Skellig Island, I found Portmagee. A few months later I came to Portmagee, I sailed to Skellig Island. I had the impression that I was in another world, in the world I wanted to be in. I found the rocks of Skellig Michael to be very similar to tattered, old books. I had the impression that I was seeing individual pages and whole books. It made a huge impression. I drew another picture; night, the setting sun, and a girl sailing in a small sailboat with one sail through the night towards the island of Skellig Michael. On the deck of this sailboat were thick, old books... For several days I have been thinking about Ireland, about Portmagee. I found Amhrán on Leabhar, in my mind's eye I saw Tomás Rua Ó Súilleabháín wandering in despair... A huge sorrow appeared in me. I also felt a certain peace, that Tomás Rua Ó Súilleabháín had found his comfort. Thank you.
