The girlbossing is just a symptom. Look at the synopsis that describes Hera as "leading a resistance." Rohan is not "the resistance." They are the power in the land backed by the world's mightiest nation. If anything, the Dunlandings are the resistance/uprising. But modern writers cannot fathom that. It is actually inconceivable for them to make a story where the good people in charge have to fight someone not in power trying to overthrow them. The protagonist MUST be framed as the oppressed party, even when that makes no sense.

"Kings built tombs more splendid than the houses of the living and counted the names of their descent dearer than the names of their sons. Childless lords sat in aged halls musing on heraldry or in high cold towers asking questions of the stars. The hero of the War of Rohirrim is Fréaláf Hildeson, the nephew of Helm Hammerhand. He wasn't expected to inherit because Helm had two sons, Haleth and Hama. Unfortunately, Haleth was killed defending Edoras and Hama was lost searching for supplies during the Long Winter. Helm himself went a bit mad and went out into the winter slaughtering Dunlendings until he froze to death. Fréaláf Hildeson was able to rally the rest of the Rohirrim, lead an attack to retake Edoras, kill Wulf, and drive the Dunlendings from Rohan. He's the hero of the story, not some unnamed daughter.

What made her a good boss was her lack of ego and a willingness to listen to people in the field that had far more experience than her. She would determine what sounded best to suit the company's needs, and she would defend the choice if it didn't work out like intended. She would go to bat for us. It seemed at times that she worked for us more than we worked for her. She could make a grown man cry if she had to. She was a damn good boss. Hollywood doesn't understand what it means to be human. Gandalf was the one wanting the conversation. They probably just wanted to name drop Gandalf but that was the reason. @@Wriath9 cool. except this never happened. Tolkien never had Hera take over and defend Rohan. Its hilarious you think these people know better than Tolkien. @joeygk2990 sure tolkien would never would have used Hera as a name I agree. I honestly believe the reason she was left in charge was the writers didn't want to make Helm the protagonist and wanted to keep close to the lore. If that is the thought process then Hera is the only choice to take command since Helm dies and his sons are dead at this point as well. The other option is create a completely new character but is that any better? Personally I think Tolkien's intent was Helm's daughter died as well at some point. Which is why she wasn't named but since he didn't specify that the writers took advantage of having a character not Helm be a protagonist.

@joeygk2990 I never said Hera took over and ruled after the movie she in fact doesn't. Her cousin becomes king at the end of the movie as is canon. She only takes over command of helms deep for a very short amount of time being the last living heir Helm. She gives only two commands (I believe) which is to evacuate helms deep and another to take Helms armor to the tower. The list of things they changed is very short and mostly minor. The end result of the movie is the exact same as Tolkien wrote. They obviously added quite a bit but I don't have an issue with additions as long as they fit. Only a few thing don't really work Hera's name and a details all of which are minor.

Movie was nice. Aside of some animation problems (esspecialy at the start), was the movie entertaining. Hera is a good, likeable chara. She is good looking and friendly. She isnt arrogant. She isnt allways correcting others. She needed multiple times help (even, when she doesnt had one clear defeat, that had i wished for it). She is on the same niveau, as many female anime mc or like Ashoka or 90er cartoon Mulan. Yes, she has taking the role from the second king, when you know the original story of the events (wiki stated, that Frelefal did most of this stuff, and it was Condor, who came to rescue at the end, the movie changed it, that she did most of the stuff and he came to the rescue at the end). But, it doesnt bother much, if you dont know, how it was supposed to be (like in my case, i dodnt knowed anything and was neutral to it). And, because Eowyn is the storyteller of the movie, could you even say, that the movie is a lie. That she changed some facts (not uncommon in mediviel storytelling), because, she wanted to inspiring girls to become shield maids. Its happens sometimes in stories, than in-universe character are changing stuff for the audience. Like in "No Game no Life Zero", where the god stated at the end of the movie, that he changed some details at the end, to make more interessting. Or, to create more connection to the present time. The movie was in overhaul really good.

The fundamental problem with 'strong female characters' as written by feminists is they are boring. There's no struggle, overcoming obstacles or character growth/arc when they are already perfect and stronger than everyone else. It also exemplifies an attitude of arrogance, hubris and narcissism-saying women don't need any help from men, ignoring the fact that no one can accomplish many things alone-no battle has been won by a single person, it's a group effort. For the record, I love actual strong female characters like in Japanese anime where the roles are often reversed initially (the male character is weak, but then becomes strong and saves the woman after she has saved him).

I don’t think it is fair for you to presume this is the fault of feminists…because it isn’t. The idea that women should be written to be perfect at everything and can only be respected through “masculine endeavors” like sword fighting or horse riding is something that feminists are staunchly against, something they have been fighting against for years (at least the real ones). Galadriel in Rings of Power is a masculine fantasy of a “strong woman” and this thinking has trickled down to women themselves internalizing it.

Harry Potter may be the chosen one, but he'd have been dead a hundred times over if not for Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, Lupin, Sirius, and even Snape. Hell, even Lockhart taught him expelliarmus. I took my granddaughter because her father, my son, is no longer here to take her himself. He died 2 years ago. "The patriarchy" Yeah, that's the biggest problem by far. The ludicrous notion here that Hera's story wasn't told because, from what I have heard, she didn't "settle down and have children." Are people forgetting about freaking Joan of Arc? Like, what are these lunatics getting at? The very idea that a woman who excels beyond her expectations would be "left out of history" despite her achievements is absolute bullsh**. Its this made up idea by feminists that "men always take credit for a woman's work!" or such utter nonsense. The stories of exceptional women are in fact told. Its because they are exceptional that we know about them. Its the same deal with men, too. Most men throughout history are a mere footnote. Eowyn will be widely recognizes as the one who slayed the Witch King. That was the only thing of importance she did, but it was an incredibly feat that should have been beyond her means, yet she still did it. If Hera somehow ended the war, even if she didn't marry and become queen, leaving it to her cousin, HER STORY WOULD BE TOLD! Even if she's "not" a girlboss / Mary Sue, this narrative utterly destroys the story of the film. "jumping off a 30 foot wall" Wait, literally again? I actually thought she didn't do much to really hate her anyways. Helm kept gassing her up as Ms. "You Can Rule the World". Whatever you say, big guy. But her most significant contribution is throwing an alley oop to Frealaf so he can look more badass when he comes. That's it. I guess the retreat to Helm's Deep too, but her fucking handler broke more of a sweat than her. All she did was take Helm into Helm's Deep, something the soldiers and her remaining brother could do as well. If they really wanted a female perspective on Rohan at the time of Helm Hammerhand, Hera could've just easily been an actual shieldmaiden. You know, a soldier? Perhaps a dame (that's a female squire or knight) for Helm's retinue? And Helm and Frealaf would've been the main focus of the story, as is with the lore, with this random female soldier bearing witness to it all. A literal retelling of a legend from long ago, from the eyes of a normal person in Middle Earth. That would be interesting, in my opinion. Having a regular knight live through these events, interact with the normal people of Edoras, trying to put up a tough and hopeful resolve whilst her fears and sorrows gnaw at her, and watch as their faith in the good of the world helps them survive another day, thanks to these legendary heroes that she knew personally. She could've had her own story adjacent to the lore of Helm's Deep, watching her soldiers and fellow citizens deal with the worsening situation, fighting the urge to drop their posts and flee for their lives, and if Rohan would even survive at all. I'm on the side that the movie was... generic, to say the least. Inoffensive if viewed on its own and with no background with LOTR. But the potential was there.

No matter how skilled and strong of a fighter a woman is, she’s not going to stand a chance alone against a skilled male fighter. We see Hera have the strength to literally overpower Wulf. How is this possible if she is a mortal woman? They tried so hard to make her like Eowyn without understanding why Eowyn’s victory aganist the witch king was believable. Eowyn won because 1) the witch king underestimated her 2) she had Merry’s help, Merry had a corporal dagger that could keep the witch king in the physical world when he stabbed him with it. Then Eowyn ran her sword right through him, landing the finishing blow. She nearly died and it took her a long time to recover after the attack. Hera on the other hand has no difficulty at all, fighting with ease and with the strength of 10 strong men with the body of an slim adult woman. she isn’t written to be convincing, rather she is someone’s self insert. But oh, I guess she’s likable so therefore she is a good female character?? How low the standards are.
@calonarang7378

@Nopeasaurus Well it depends on how they execute it. Because there has always been a battle between brains and bronze. But main point is We must ask ourselves if she fallows the proper steps to achieving her goals. Example: The Last Airbender vs Legend of Korra. Does Hera go through the steps, test, and learns or is handed stuff & then thrown out into the world?

Éowyn was a *real* strong female character in the original films, and it is insane that they got her actress to narrate this anime, trying to draw a parallel between her and Hera, like Hera is anywhere near the same level as her. Éowyn earned her power and her respect through her blood sweat and tears. Her onscreen presence is not soon forgotten. Who is going to remember this generic anime redhead? People complain there aren’t enough female characters in the stories… but all the ones that do appear are forces of nature - Galadriel (Cate Blanchett, not the other one), Arwen, Éowyn. These characters are literally and figuratively powerful, and perfectly portrayed by the actresses that played them. We *don’t* need “girl bossing” because it is shallow and fake and demeaning. Girl bosses have plot armor and male incompetence because the writers can’t imagine women being capable to do hard work on their own without those things. They admire strong characters like Èowyn, but they can’t write those character themselves because these writers are shallow.

There’s plenty of things Jackson’s version changed from the books. For instance: Arwen’s involvement (she’s barely in the books), lack of Glorfindel, no Tom Bombadil, the change to the Paths of the Dead, the way Saruman died and the scouring of the Shire. Particularly, the decision to have more of Arwen was definitely an outside agenda by the studio to have a love interest that was palpable on screen. For the most part, I love Jackson’s movies, but there was plenty of agendas, as there are in all big-budget movies.

Because they have to push their political agendas, the Lotr stuff is simple Troyan Horse makeup for us masses to sit and consume their speech.

@@timz9862 No, Arwen involvement works because many of the movie watchers are going to be non book readers, so in a way introduce her to the audience. Nothing wrong with that. It isn't a major loss to remove Glorfindel, since he is just there and then gone.

@@xWriterclarenocturnexx Liked the new movie. I dont know the books, and dont knowed what was to happen from the lore, that existed to the new movie. Aside of some animation problems and the weird background, was it mostly nice. Story was good. All the character are likeable in there roles. Hera is a friendly, good looking character (rare for the western side) and is someone, who needed multiple times help and resuce. I only had wished, that she had 1 clear defeat in the movie (each times when she had trouble, came the rescue nearly instantly). The fights was even equaly, because she used a shield, while the others didnt (my complain to that: by the arrow scene: Why didnt any rider used the shield, that they had, and how did the arrows pierced thought every armor, like it was butter). Its true, that practicly all the stuff she did, was in the original lore the second kings doing. But, it doesnt bother, if you dont know that lore. And, because Eowyn is the storyteller, could you even say, that she was changing some stuff, to inspiring girls to become shield maids. In overall was the movie entertaining and Hera as a character is on the same lvl, as most other female anime mc or charas like clone wars Ashoka or 90er cartoon Mulan.

I saw the writing on the wall when they did the Hobbit with an unnecessary female hero character insert. Because it was Jackson, I gave it the benefit of doubt, but the more I looked at Philippa Boyens, and even Fran and found all of the feminist push in the movies came from them, even as far back as the original trilogy. They were constantly pushing to expand the female roles and make them less as Tolkien wrote them, and more in line with modern expectations, which is why Arwen's more of a warrior elf, and Eowyn goes on a "ain't no man gonna tell me" arc. They wanted Arwen at Helm's Deep until it was leaked and received a bit of a fan backlash, so she was removed. Apparently she's still visible in some shots of the theatrical release. In the originals the agenda it was just 'relatively' low-key, but you can see how they gained more ground with each movie. Alas, the modern Message has insidiously worked its way to New Zealand too.

What was that, 60 companies tried to make this animation? That explains why in these snippets, the animation alters between fluid and rocky as heck. Just so the makers know, the old anime movies and series looked like that because the studios had to cut corners left and right to afford to do their own projects inbetween comissioned stuff like those series done after european children's books, back in the 70's. doesn't mean it does not make people'ys eyes water. But back then the scripts were good, so we kids suffered through nit happily.
