The diving bottle I use in the video:

I tested the small 0.7L Smaco S500 scuba diving tank.

1:38 How to assemble
3:07 How to fill
5:12 Pool test

You can use the small SMACO S500 to do short dives without heavy equipment.
I do however recommend you get a scuba course.

I worked in a Scuba shop in high school in Jersey City Nj USA. This was 1973-4. A man in the town invented and produced an item called. “Snork-Air”. It is exactly like this except instead of a normal built in regulator , The mouthpiece had a small lever in it. Instead of giving air based on inhalation, you actuated the air flow by pushing up with your tongue! When you had a breath you let off the lever with your tongue and a spring would return the lever to the No flow position. It did not sell well and was discontinued long before I worked there but the inventor was a customer when I filled his tanks so I got to try it. I can not find anything on the Internet about it and I forgot the man’s name but I tried it in the pool and it worked fine.

I dive with a SpareAir and love it. I sat on the bottom at about 40 feet and took more than 20 breaths before I got bored and just went back to my normal reg. I am sure it would be good for a safe ascent from my normal dive depth of 70-90 feet as long as I breathe normally during the emergency.

We used to carry tanks like that on our vests when we were doing drug interdiction in helicopters out over the ocean (probably only about a third the size of that one you tested). We were told we could only count on two or three good breaths (and after that if you were still in the sinking helicopter, it probably didn't matter anyway). I always wondered how long they would have really worked.

"hot air expands a bit" Well, it actually expands A LOT! Thats why diveshops with a compressor often have an heat exchanger (cooler) around the ducts that exit the compressor. It easily brings 20 bar of additional pressure when a filled divetank is left to go back to room temperature.

So I used to be an avid swimmer prior to having heart surgery (was born with a heart condition that got missed for 20 years and almost died...fun times lol) so honestly this would be something I would use because it's lightweight and simple to use. I've seen variations that have a carrying case and a hose attached, so would probably do that then one where you're basically holding it out of your mouth. And the only thing I could think would be to stay about 8-10 feet for a while, maybe a little deeper. But not something where you couldn't easily get to the surface. But I'll take 8-10 feet for detached snuba, essentially, than nothing. I'm probably never going full on scuba diving again with the complications I've had since surgery

I agree with Garbossa, Spooks and others that these cylinders should not be used except by qualified SCUBA divers, and even then only as an emergency bail-out in a low-air situation. Although no diver worth his salt should get into a low-air situation in the first place. There is the danger of lung expansion injury (aka "burst lung") on the way up and even the danger of ruptured eardrums on the way down without proper training. This half-baked discussion of SCUBA techniques seems to be getting more and more popular on KZbin and should be avoided. Get proper, certified training and stay within your limits. I've worked as a DM in the Med, Indian Ocean and Red Sea and seen enough "qualified" divers doing stupid/dangerous things. Diving is a wonderful, safe pastime but only if you follow the rules: ALL of them.
@Christian_Wedoy
@Christian_Wedoy 2 жыл бұрын
I agree anyone using these should get scuba training first. But I see nothing wrong with a certified diver using these for shallow dives (down to 10m as it says on the instructions for the tank). There is no bigger chance of lung expansion with these tanks than with a regular scuba tank. The physics is the same. And the chance of getting the bends is slim to none as at 10 min you don't have time to get enough nitrogen in the blood to make any issue.

I think of this as an accessory to freediving or spear fishing, when you are laying at the bottom of 6-10 meters, you can use this to fill up your lungs. Which might make it last for longer as you are laying still. Still about 5-7 minutes is probably the max because of the pressure underwater making it half capacity from what it would be at the surface
@earlgrey2130
@earlgrey2130 Жыл бұрын
1. This thing creates bubbles, which means the noise is going to scare away fish. So it's useless for spearfishing. 2. The second you breathe from this you are no longer freediving, but scuba diving. And since scuba tables really aren't developed for multiple short fives with fast ascend- and desend-rates and few breaths, they are basically useless. Which means you are just gambling with your safety as you wont know what actually happens in your body. There is no point in accepting so much risk for extended dive time. Just become a better freediver or vice versa switch to scuba if you are unhappy with your dive times.

@Christian_Wedoy
@Christian_Wedoy 2 жыл бұрын
You usually get a free flow problem after some minutes when diving in close to freezing water because the compressed air lowers the temperature when it expands. If you use this as a spare air source it will not freeze before after you start using it, and probably not before it is empty anyways. If you want a spare air supply, I recommend the Spare Air that is made for that.

I can see some uses for this. Boat maitainence would be a good one. Spearfishing or snorkeling would be another. Any situation in which you would need a bit of air in short intervals rather than one long dive. I do have some concerns about accessibility though. Compared to a full set of SCUBA gear that costs thousands of dollars, most people who don't have proper certification wouldn't bother making that type of investment. Something like this that costs only a few hundred dollars isn't the same financial barrier to entry which leaves the door wide open to people who have zero experience or training in dive safety.

It's a simple maths and physics : 200Bar x 2L = 400L. Average lungs capacity (men-5-5.5L, women 3.5L), Average inhale qty - 12-14/min so, if we would take the lowest capacity 5L x 13 times/min = 65L/min, 400L : 65L/min = 6m15s :)

Hey so I'm looking at this as something to get for fun and get more used to being underwater before I take actual SCUBA certification classes. I don't want to spend a fortune on this so I'm wondering if there's a cheaper way to fill it with air? Would a bike pump work? I'm really new to this and don't really know anything about air compression or anything like that.

No. You should not use a bike pump. That would contaminate the air

Take the class first. At least then you’ll be aware of all the dangers of breathing compressed air. You’ll have more than enough opportunity to “get more used to being underwater” in your course. While your at it, ask your instructor what they think of this product. I doubt it will be favourable…

if you take a breath at the surfice you do not need to worry about lung expansion. Lung expansion only happens durring diving when you breath compressed air at a depth and accend from that depth. the expanding air will cause lung damage.

bro these facts about lungs exploding and eardrums exploading makes me nervous to go deep
@kick0777
@kick0777 2 жыл бұрын
The reason why this happens is because the air in a scuba tank is compressed. As you go deeper, the pressure from the water compacts the air in your tank and your lungs and makes it more dense. If you breath the compressed air to fill your lungs at a lower depth and start to go up, the air in your lungs will expand because of the lower pressure. If you hold your breath, the air has no place to go as it is expanding and then pops your lungs like a balloon. This is why you never hold your breath when breathing from compressed air. You can still hold your breath when freediving or breathing from regular surface air because it can only compact as you go deeper and expand back to the original state when you surface.
