Great collaboration between a credible and thorough local historian and international experts. Congratulations, Scott Dawson, on adding fascinating detail to American history.

A dozen of the last names of the original settlers have ages ago been discovered among the Lumbee Indiana in Lumberton and Pembroke, North Carolina, where they remain today. Your story is incomplete.

No mention of the 28 carved stone tablets and the tomb of Eleanor Dare that were left over a track of several hundred miles while fleeing and her tomb. From the tablets she seems to have married a high king of what are now called the creek tribes. Richard Thornton of the people of one fire has an interesting series on this and other events from those times and earlier.

All around that area is a ship graveyard, the coast of North Carolina has had activity on it for over 600 years. The stuff they are digging up could literally be from anyone.

I think the Roanoke group splintered for one reason or another. I also think that glass, copper and other artifacts could have come from sources other the Roanoke settlers. Without actually encountering the Roanoke settlers, Native Americans could have obtained Old World items from the Roanoke settlement through trade or discovery. I tend to believe a sizeable number of the colonists were assimilated into Native American cultural groups that lived in the Hatteras area.

It wasn't really a failure he wasn't able to turn return due to the Spanish English War for 3 years long before then they probably thought they were abandoned and I believe the vast majority of them survived despite the fact that the local Chief said he had all of them put to death

There have been genetic studies that suggest English DNA is present among the descendants of the Native American populations on Hatteras Island, formerly known as Croatoan Island. These findings are part of ongoing research into the fate of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, the English settlers who disappeared in the late 16th century.Researchers have analyzed DNA from modern-day residents of Hatteras Island, as well as historical records and archaeological evidence. Some of these studies suggest a potential link between the Lost Colony settlers and the Croatoan people, who may have integrated the English settlers into their community.

If they had time to pick up and move, they would have left more than just a cryptic, one-word clue to where they went. If they all died off, where are all the remains of the people, buildings, tools, etc? When Raleigh came back a year later, there was no trace of them.

Without confirmation that a single soul survived beyond that point in history only means they found artifacts. Those artifacts could very well be the remnants of plunder from the colony being wiped out. I would imagine if any survived they would have found others who arrived later and made contact. It would also be written all over historic records especially considering who was lost there.
@Sampsonoff

No one went and looked for them. Only a hundred years later was any effort made. The Indians on Croatoan reportedly intermarried and had offspring that had fairer skin, but generations had passed already

I agree. Finding artifacts from English people in Native garbage dumps is not a sound argument for drawing conclusions that the two peoples coexisted together. I watched a television show with these guys in it and one of them readily admitted that this was personal and they had a chip on their shoulder with an agenda. Imagine if the wild haired dude from Ancient Aliens tried to say finding a rock from Mars on earth was solid proof that Martians visited earth and coexisted with humans. He'd bed laughed out of the room. Because he's drawing conclusions to prove an agenda. Show me solid evidence or I'm not buying any conclusions.

@@brob-zy8zi I am all for saying there's evidence of some sort of contact. I would imagine the English settlement was readily known about in the region even if it was only there for a short time. And for whatever reason they departed, friendly or unfriendly terms their encampment could have been salvaged, the goods could have been traded or they could have been raided. It is possible they could have assimilated into the natives Tribes willingly to survive or unwillingly as slaves or captives. It's possible none of the men ever survived and it was only the women taken in. Even if it were only a small group that survived how did their existence never come to be known after they disappeared is the real question. Maybe the answer to all of that is no adults survived and only children and the children depending on their ages couldn't tell anyone based off various reasons, inability to speak that language because of their age at the time of capture or who knows. It would be easy to keep some of the survivors isolated if the Tribes came across the English again. The possibility of interracial changes could be the result of women captured. I am all for finding clues but not saying these artifacts without a shadow of doubt means there were survivors. Unfortunately I don't think they will ever know what truly happened.

That wld be the only reason they left is bc the natives was attacking them. They was told if they abandoned the colony, to put the name on something but if they was forced to put the name with a x over it and John wld know they was forced to go.

or maybe they were taken in by the Croatoans or another tribe, there is solid evidence to suggest they went with them instead. There were records taken and even artifacts to suggest that they just integrated into their tribe when they didn't receive help from England fast enough. Theres even records of their descendants being on the island, also the Croatoans and many other tribes were known to be peaceful and accepting of European settlers.

What ignorance. No algonquins were there. The cherokees speaking an Iroquoian language were still not there until the late 17th century with british supplied muskets to conquer and enslave. Algonquin, North American Indian tribe of closely related Algonquian-speaking bands originally living in the dense forest regions of the valley of the Ottawa River and its tributaries in present-day Quebec and Ontario, Canada.
