A modern tale: the more you have, the more you spend, the more you need to spend on maintaining what you have. The circle of life.

Or, like me, you fly under the radar. You live in a nice, modest house, you drive a sensible used older vehicle, you don't wear flashy jewelry or clothes and spend your money on your family, and travel, but mostly keep it safe in the bank. That way, you owe no one and you sleep very well. Maybe, that's just an old tale though, and not a modern one! 😉
@nancyn347

@@d.d.mac.3773 It's the sensible one. Too many people are suffering now because interest rates are skyrocketing, food prices are rising, and they have no money in the kitty to weather the current financial squeeze. For too long, with 0% interest rates, people had been living way beyond their means, and "the chickens are coming home to roost", as they say.

I owned a second "income producing property", and I will never do it again. The tenants were horrible and I had to sell the place just to get them out of the house. Current Canadian "landlord/tenant" laws make it almost impossible to evict horrible tenants.

Funny how they just bought their forever home 18 months ago, and were happy with it and the area, until they won some money... Now they are stressing and trying to force themselves to like something else, just so they can spend the cash. There are other investments they might consider and I wonder if they shouldn't have spoken with a financial advisor (other than Phil!). Also, what's the rush? Perhaps they ought to tie the money up so they (she) can't spend it, until they know for sure.

It was very evident from watching this that the couple wasn’t compatible. Unfortunately they both went off the deep end from reading the article that was posted here. I think Roger’s instincts were correct in terms of limiting the budget although the house for 715,000 was quite lovely and would’ve kept them in the same location. Their huge mistake was quitting their jobs. They could have consulted with an investment manager and saved/invested the rest for retirement and or emergencies. They were quite comfortable before winning the lottery and all the money went up in smoke. I don’t fault him for trying to re-create a music career but he could’ve done that as an avocation in addition to the IT work, playing local clubs and such. Sad story. Hopefully they both are in a much better place now. No I don’t mean heaven, I mean in terms of their lives and relationship with their daughters and so forth

They should have gone and bought rental properties. That way they could have an guaranteed income. But that would also mean that they couldn't spend all that they brought in they'd have to run it as a business. Lower income housing is very profitable especially if you keep the rent as low as you can afford to. That way you can have long term renters instead of fly by night people who could be the type who mess up the rental. A steady profitable business is always great.

I’m positive after watching this that this couple were on very different pages. I just get the feeling that lottery wins so often lead to difficulties and I’m not convinced the house they put an offer on was the right choice -the wife was obviously raring to spend money and go upmarket whereas the husband looked far from enthusiastic even after having the offer accepted! I have to agree that none of the properties were very exciting considering at the time this was filmed you could get more for your money.

Roger and Laura won £1.8million ( Image: Ross Parry Agency-Leeds) The couple won £1.8million on the lottery in 2005. IT manager, Roger, and his teacher wife, Lara, both quit their jobs and bought a luxury barn conversion in North Yorkshire, costing £800,000. Griffiths also put £25,000 towards making a record with his old band from Lancaster University. Despite investing in property and a beauty salon the housing crash saw the value of their property plumet. The couple split in 2013 after their money had gone, with them both blaming one another for their loss in fortunes.

It’s depends on the show. Location Location Location is a lot better than most British house hunting shows because most of the house hunters have an urgency to find a house. They need a place to live and they’ve been actively searching. Even if they don’t find a house with Phil and Kirstie, they’re going to eventually find a house because they need to find a home to live. They don’t want to stay where they’re at. Something like Escape to the country, most of the couples are in the daydreaming phase and have just started looking, most aren’t even ready to move, and they just don’t have the same urgency.
