Louisiana's republican governor Jeff Landry just signed a law ordering all schools to display the 10 commandments in every classroom. Let's talk about it, and remind ourselves what the 10 C's actually are and why this is so silly.

Tbf, from what I understand "don't take his name in vain" is supposed to be more "don't pretend you're speaking for god when you aren't". People just turned it into "don't say his name" because that's better than admitting they're not supposed to claim to know his wishes when they're talking out their asses.

It's also partially likely due to magical incantations as well - most religions believe names have power, so using their god's name in vain would be to invoke their power (and draw their attention), thus debasing and offending them.

I am a retired attorney in the USA. As an attorney, I had a good deal of expertise in the intersection of religion and the law. Until a few years ago, I would be completely comfortable in saying that the use of government resources to promote religion was a clear violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. That has all changed in the Trump era. I no longer feel that I can predict how courts are likely to rule on this issue. Perhaps worse, it would be difficult to advise clients how to proceed in the face of shifting political agendas and the fact that these political agendas are influencing the courts. I think I might be more inclined to argue these days that posting the Ten Commandments in a public school violates the rights of those students who are not Jewish or Christian under the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. The logic here is that a student who is taught to conduct his life according to the principles of somebody else’s religion is not free to exercise their own religious beliefs. It is ludicrous on its face that one clause in the First Amendment might be more important than another clause in the First Amendment but that’s my best guess on how things might work out in practice.
@cardinal_Arche

As a, hopefully, soon to be attorney who is currently studying for the UBE. Thank you for your comment. I hadn't even considered the implications of advising prospective clients on what courts are likely to rule based on recent history. But, as your comment illustrates, it is a concern that clearly needs addressing. If nothing else, the events since Trump's election have demonstrated that our judicial system has been tangibly compromised by bad actors with political agendas. Trump did not start it, but his appointees definitely highlighted the problem.

@@lcplaztec One of the reasons the founding fathers did not adopt Christianity as the official religion was that they could not agree whose version of Christianity they should adopt. Nobody wanted to be forced to practice somebody else’s version of it. The folks clamoring for Christianity to be adopted as the national religion today have lost sight of this fact. Would the Roman Catholic Church, the Methodists, the Four Square Church, the Baptists, the Church of Latter Day Saints, the Church of Christian Science, the Pentecostals, the Seventh Day Adventists, or somebody else be dictating the way in which Christians and non Christian’s would have to worship? As a strong advocate for the separation of church and state, I really think we should be hammering this issue home to the Christian right.

The thing is, everyone in schools are perfectly free to pray and practice their religions. People are nostalgic for the ‘good old days’ when everyone recited a prayer every morning. 100% This is entirely a tactic in the overall goal of getting rid of public schools while installing fundamentalist American Christianity in public spaces, to the detriment of all citizens. Yup. If you think critically about the policies that the "religious right" actually support, it becomes quickly apparent that they don't care about religion. It's just an easy talking point to radicalize their base and use as an excuse to justify their political agenda, even when the religion they claim to be following doesn't actually support said agenda. Nothing is actually for religious reasons. It's all carefully calculated publicity stunts and pushes to further political agendas. It's the same level of hypocrisy as the people banning books that so much as mention the existence of LGBTQ people "for the kids" being the same people who support child labor. At one point, I thought they simply didn't understand the faith they were trying to follow, but it didn't take long to realize they simply didn't care about religion at all.

Buddhism has five precepts that are simply better. 1. Don't kill, with an exception of defense, necessity. This includes animals. The Bibles do not murder allows the government to have people kill and the church, you can commit genocide and it's okay. 2. Don't steal, this is the same. 3. Do not commit sex offenses. No kids, no cheating on or with people in committed relationships, no rape, no sex with monastics. There is no requirement for marriage, no anti LGBT. 4. No false witness. Surprisingly, the exact same as the Bible, and people also assume it means no lying when it actually means no lying when people ask you to be a witness. This rule is because lying as a witness helps to break the first three precepts. 5. No getting intoxicated or sloth inducing drugs. This one is because being intoxicated leads to breaking the first four precepts. While sloth inducing drugs keep you from performing your duties. Casual drug use and having a couple of beers or wine is fine. Overall, a ton more reasonable. Not explicitly religious, either. Implicitly religious because if you break them your reincarnation could be in a bad place

This has been a common practice by Republican governors in recent years. Basically, they sign bills in the hopes that they get challenged to the Supreme Court to see whether our current 6/3 conservative court will side with them. If the court has integrity they would stand on precedent and rule the laws are unconstitutional, but the court doesn't have integrity and it's already work in Republicans favor a couple times. To Emma's point as well, it's a win win for the governor because they get to look like a good conservative when they sign it, and if it fails they get to play the oppressed conservative card for easy political points. Sabbath is the name of the 7th day. It is also used as part of the name for any Holy Day in Judaism. The Sabbath can't be moved any more than Saturday can be moved. So, the Sabbath is Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. If you are going to keep that commandment, that is the time frame. Of course, this isn't even about religious instruction. Most Christians do not even believe in the 10 commandments anymore. Their theology says that Jesus supersedes the Law. The entirety of the Law is now, "Love God and love your neighbor." So, here we are. Christians are demanding that the 10 commandments be put up. Why? They say because it is a historical document that is important in terms of law and the development of our law. That, of course, is in stark contrast to the actual historical documents we have. No, the real reason is because they want to create a coercive environment. They want to take advantage of government to give political power to a particular faith. And you can bet that Christians wouldn't stand for this if it were being done to benefit a different faith.

Unfortunately, the question is not "is this legal" (quite assuredly not) but rather "what are you going to do about it?" Basically its an excuse to flaunt power and show off how close they are to a theocracy because no one else could get away with this. I'd say that something like the Buddhist Eight-Fold Path is far more relevant to students and US law (Drunk driving, speeding, drug which commandment would those fall under?). But you can damn well bet noone is going to get a Buddha statue in front of a courthouse.

That's what we had in Quebec, in public schools. There was a class called moral class. When I did the interview, the school guide asked if we were catholic. If yes, there is a religion class and if no, there is a morals class. Now that I think about it, it is weird that they had a catholic class but at least it is not forced on everyone. In morals class, they talk a little bit about the various popular religions. They talk about respecting your fellow man. That was in the 90s. Probably the catholic class has been eliminated now.

Honestly, religion in schools is the best way to create atheists. Forced belief is no belief. And even the Christian sects don’t agree on matters of faith… Lutherans vs Baptists anyone?

The Louisiana law has very specific wording for the ten commandments, which a) would make it harder for kids to understand and b) would upset other branches of Christianity

in the bible, only the second list (with the boiling the kid in goat milk) is referred to as "The Ten Commandments". In the story it's clearly god's preferred list too. Paraphrasing, god says that Moses wrote the first list and probably made mistakes, so he'll write the real list himself and give the final version to Moses.

So....i grew up in small town Louisiana. Lemme give you the short version. I was a kid with Aspergers, who liked dragons, swords, rock n roll, anime, all that good jazz. I was also very interested in religion. I was raised pentacostal and was pretty devout about it, but i read up on the catholics , the jews, the hindus, ect. gnosticism, masonry, just like fucking everything. It was when i relly started questioning shit that things got hella dicey. I was already a weirdo, and serverly bullied. add in being an atheist who knows too much about religion and the fact that i was a punk by now, and i was like public enemy number one. I remeber having to fight to not stand for the pledge of alligence, as i wasnt comfortable with the under god thing, or the oath in general. My issue was mostly extreme bullying, i got physically assulted a few times for being a "devil worshipper". That was what they called me. "Devil worshipper". I got called that even when i was still christian. sorry for the lore dump but my point is Christian fundamentalism and a sense of xenophobia is so engrained in the culture down there to begin with, its no suprise this has happened. I can only imagine how horrible things are now for free thinkers. It's legit dangerous. This theocracy shit has been a long time in the making. There's an article from 2019 called " How Gene Mills Is Using Democracy to Make Louisiana a Theocracy" and it goes into much more detail but TL/DR : Dominionists used Louisiana's ingorance and prexisting christian tendencies to worm thier way into an already notoriously crooked goverment. This is how we get people like LA Rep Dodie Horton (the bill's author) saying shit like "I’m not concerned with an atheist. I’m not concerned with a Muslim, I’m concerned with our children looking and seeing what God’s law is.” Number 49th in Education. Number 1 in Violent crime. Something is very wrong with Louisiana.
