When my fiance 'officially' asked me to marry him we both knew what the answer was going to be, because we'd decided together it was what we wanted. I think if a proposal is a genuine surprise, there's something wrong in the relationship.

The way I asked someone out was by repeating to myself "That feeling is pride screwing with you" and "This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time." You build up a tolerance to fear. And when they reject you, you feel free, free enough to go out with someone who actually likes you.

April 2018! I discovered John and Hank a couple years ago via Crash Course, but have only recently begun binge-watching all the Vlog Brothers videos. After a frustrating discussion about who shall propose to whom, my significant other and I agreed that when one person proposed, the other shall offer an equally elaborate answer. You know how some people choose to rent out a sign or go to a fancy restaurant, etc.? The other person is also given that same opportunity to arrange something special in order to provide their answer. If you're not into that idea, just know that marriage is something that the two of you should have spoken about LONG before a proposal. If the proposal is the first time "marry" has come up in conversation, something is amiss and you should take some time to think about it. It doesn't matter how public it is, it doesn't matter how much that significant other spent on the proposal or the ring; what matters is YOUR happiness. And also theirs, this is a relationship after all. But your happiness matters EQUALLY as much. If you're not ready for that, you better let your significant other know. It would be unfair to them sign up for a lifetime of partnership, just because they asked, if you weren't sure you really wanted it as well.
