Also, for a video about being more Asian, after watching the video there’s a surprising lack of Asians in the video? When Lor said she thought it was all about Asian representation, I assumed the majority of the cast would be as well. But they were mostly just youtubers who were popular at the time? No hate towards Lor, obviously she had no control over this, and really I respect her more for showing us this as a learning experience.
@LovelyLor5 жыл бұрын
If you look at Yomyomf's other videos they did have a lot more asian representation over all. I definitely think the reason so many youtubers were jammed in this video was because of KZbin just thinking if they put big names in it that it would do well. I totally agree with you and I just wanted to clarify because I think that The Fu and Yomyomf definitely had a different idea/motive/creative direction that didn't get executed :(

This reminded me of the whole Adam movie situation. This is a movie that is based of the book Adam (a transphobic book about a cis straight boy who poses as a trans man so he could date his sister's LESBIAN friend who he later r@pes and everyone acts like that's okay???) There were actual trans actors who were casted for the movie, told nothing about what the movie was actually about, and were constantly misgendered and treated horribly throughout the filming. We shouldn't blame the actors for being in the movie because they were tricked and used. Just like how Lor didn't know the exact details of what she was filming until after she had signed the contract and got paid. Either way Adam is a terrible movie and nobody should go watch it. (Don't worry. The trans actors already got paid so we can boycott the hell out of it without hurting them.)

I'M IN THIS VIDEO! I'm cosplayed as Zatana with a wig so luckily people cant recognize me, my actual hair is pink/purple/blue so it would have been hard to hide. My brother is an actor and invited me to cosplay during it. I was pretty sure it was terribly cringy so I never actually watched the music video. I did skim it once and then literally told no one about it. The song burned itself in my head for weeks due to the choreography. Dark times all around

It seems the "geekery" video was made by Asians and intended to be a parody of stereotypes of their pop culture. It actually somewhat reminded me of the movie "History of the World, Part 1" by Mel Brooks, in which there is a Hollywood- musical style parody of the Spanish Inquisition, complete with what looks like Orthodox Jewish men in black suits singing while being tortured, and culminating with a synchronized-swim routine done by Catholic nuns. (If you're not familiar with the genius of Mel Brooks, I know that sounds absolutely crazy!) Pushing the boundaries of good taste, definitely, but somehow funny - which is what Brooks, who is Jewish, was known for, parodying aspects of his culture. That type of humor is not popular anymore and actually highly offensive.. but I digress. It seems you thought you were being invited to be in a video about Asian subculture/lolita fashion, when in reality it was a parody music video not quite on the level of Weird Al Yankovic (another comedy genius). Crass, but obviously making fun of stereotypes. The garish purple light coming up at you at an angle was done, I suspect, to give you that creepiness that they were trying to make fun of. You looked great anyway, as you do now in that lovely coord, as many have already commented. And all I can say now is.. I'm sorry you unknowingly became involved in something that offended your sensibilities. Your earnestness is commendable, but don't be too hard on yourself. It was supposed to be funny - well, that was someone's idea of humor.
@verybarebones4 жыл бұрын
Is Spanish catholicism his culture? Because if not, i imagine that's why it fell out of fashion, because it's not all that cool to mock other cultures and religions now...
@ladylibrum71452 жыл бұрын
@@verybarebones I'm revisiting this video after so long and see there was a comment left here. Many decades ago it was acceptable for comedians to poke fun of other races, cultures and religions. It was, for the most part, done goodnaturedly, with no malice, and with the understanding that stereotypes were a superficial way of pigeon-holing groups of people (because people are all different, of course). As for Mel Brooks, he was Jewish. I think in his case his parodying the Catholic church, as well as Hitler and Nazi Germany, was a kind of "comedic vengeance". If you can laugh at the devil, you've got him beat, so to speak. And yes, what is considered humorous has drastically changed over time. Look up "celebrity roasts" from the '60s and '70s, you might be shocked if you are not familiar with that era.

Watching this again in 2022, I can feel her pain more deeply. My sister referred to a lolita dress I made as a "costume" and I instantly felt indignant. People who love this fashion hold it very dear to their hearts, so I can see how painful this experience of being in a musical parody must have been for Lor at the time. And I love that she has bows on her elbows!
@Bee-of9uu5 жыл бұрын
I kind of actually like this concept of a video? Initial preconceptions aside, it satirizes this exact scenario; something being played and hyped even though it’s not that way irl, and then being spun in a more sellable product to get more views and money. It did exactly what it was criticizing in a way.
@mariamigorena64395 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for making this video ! I love your honesty and you're really brave to show us this. Everybody can make mistakes and I'm so glad you adressed it !
@juliam81345 жыл бұрын
At first all I wanted to do was cringe my face off, but honestly, I agree with Charlie Gates' comment, it feels like it was a parody that didn't succeed in translating the fact that it was a parody. I would even give them the benefit of the doubt that the blatant misrepresentation of each stereotype (like "lolita costume" instead of "lolita fashion") was an intentional jab at the people who see these dramatized and incorrect stereotypes as correct. For me, your apology, however well thought out and presented, really isn't necessary because if they had better portrayed the meaning of the video, it would show that you weren't actually misrepresenting lolita fashion with your cameo. If they had put at the end some dialogue between the brothers like "is that really how the internet sees Asian cultures / subcultures?! *face palm* " it would have worked so much better because yes, it's beyond cringy, but that's the point (if I'm not giving the editors too much credit lol).

I actually think the "Lolita Costumes" line is fitting, not in the sense that Lolita is ever a costume or that you, Lor, see or wear it that way, but taking into consideration that the "voice" and "pov" of the lyrics are coming from clueless executives who are trying to tell actual Asian people how to behave, and then YOMYOMF lampooning their assumptions, them using the wrong terminology just underscores how uneducated and ridiculous their attempts at control really are. Your own negative, corpse-like reaction to the poor terminology is then even more successful, because it shows a real Lolita having contempt for these buffoonish executives who are trying to dictate, but don't know wtf they're talking about. So, rather than being cringey, I say well done!
