This is epic for me in so many ways, I saw them twice over the next 2 years after this. One note for this performance is a shout-out to whatever nerd rocked that wireless mic for Perry. It sounds amazing.

Steve Smith is a monster on drums. Incredible groove master. Always cool in the pocket. I took my girlfriend to see them in 1980 and bought tickets behind the band just to watch him. What a classy move 😆

It just looks like it flows effortlessly from their fingertips.
@Mr._Mints5 ай бұрын
In this case, it flows effortlessly from the tape that they’re miming to. 😂 That being said, surely in the actual venue they were really playing live. So why does the TV broadcast use a recording, instead of the actual live performance??

I was never a huge Journey fan, though everyone I went ro school with was. I did like some of their hits, though, and there's no denying Steve's talent. Thanks, TMS.

Is it because you weren't into the heavier bands? Journey was "heavy" music in those days.
@StephanieJeanne Жыл бұрын
@@gregoryduncan3067 No, not that. I liked Queen and Led Zeppelin, among others. Like I said, I liked their hits, I just didn't go out and buy their albums. I don't know your age so I don't know what bands you were into at that time. Are you old enough to have been into Journey, or did you discover them later?
@gregoryduncan3067 Жыл бұрын
@@StephanieJeanne I'm 47. It's hard for me to think somebody wouldn't like Journey stuff. Even their non-hits were pretty damn good. Their Evolution album was great, I think. I was into them in the 80s.

@@StephanieJeanne The thing is too is that you weren't familiar with their non-hits material. In those days, you had to pay ACTUAL MONEY for music.

Great deeper track from this album!! Didn’t know they performed it on this show. Awesome! Although, I have to say that I think this is, unfortunately, a canned performance. All the overdubs and layered backup vocals from the studio recording are here as well as the fade. Midnight Special was overwhelmingly live, and Journey has been live in other clips I’ve seen, so not sure what happened.

Quality performance * I think this song had some 'sweetening' much like the live KISS albums, for broadcast * extra vocal layers added
@callielucas1197 Жыл бұрын
It's just straight off the album and they are lip-synching and playing along with the album version. That happened a lot in those days, and everyone knew and accepted this type of fake performance. It wasn't the same as live concerts that use a backup track and pretend they aren't. I don't know why they didn't do it live like they did in 1978 on the Midnight Special, especially since later in this 1979 show, they did a live Jam Session with Journey with Herbie Hancock and many others, with a song called Roadrunner. That can be found on YT by searching for it. That's one of my very favorite performances ever, especially for Steve Perry's incredible rhythm blues funk style singing and improv, as well as the hand jive people surrounding him in front of the stage. Very 70's, and shows off the real talent of the Journey members outside of there usual style. Just search for Journey Roadrunner Midnight Special 1979. I'm going to go watch that now.
@artbell259 Жыл бұрын
@@callielucas1197 I have not heard the studio version in ages, so maybe I got fooled. Good fakery by Steve Perry since it may he's up well. I notice the drums are being played very gently which is a huge sign of fakery.
@artbell259 Жыл бұрын
@@callielucas1197 one counter point, no copyright claim was made by journey to grab this video's earnings. Perhaps the TV show's audience noise and some effects were enough to claim full rights, or the band was not as strong as David Bowie at the US Festival - who refused to release video song rights to the promoter
