Low back self massage technique is great to address stiffness and spasm of the lower back muscles. The lower back muscles are often a source of lower back pain. They can be the primary source of lower back pain: muscle strain, overuse, excessively tight. But they can also be a secondary source of lower back pain, to a deeper injury to the lower back. If a joint, disc, or deep connective tissue of the lower back is injured and causes pain, the lower back muscles will tighten and spasm to “protect” the injured lower back. This tightening of the lower back muscles often causes more pain!
The lower back gets caught in this injury cycle, leading to longer recovery times and greater frustration from the individual. Safely and effectively performing low back self massage, can help alleviate myofascial sources of low back pain while simultaneously decompressing the lower back.
This is my favorite exercise for alleviating lower back pain at home. All you need is a ball in the lower back, stay relaxed, and pull your knee to your chest. You may need to use a tennis ball versus a lacrosse ball if you find this exercise to be too uncomfortable. A massage ball for back pain can sometimes really help with a sore, painful lower back!
