Sumo hasn’t evolved because it has insulated itself in it a bubble of tradition and isolation. It has nothing to do with being perfect. Itagaki hyping sumo up this much is so silly. We’ve seen what happens when sumo wrestlers actually go outside their sport to fight.

It's a manga about all aspects of fighting. He is japanese, ofc he is going to show sumo respect. After all this is not sumo practictioners competing in a different sport. This is ancient sumo at its best. A death match, the whole point of the arc is to draw parallels between the main cast of fighters and the sumo equivalents. These are not athelets, these are fighters, big difference in the baki world

I don't think it has anything to do with their artistic capabilities. they arent hating on it for its aesthetic quality - only the story. from what I mostly see from people is that they just find the sumo arc boring. the mangaka is a japanese nationalist so of course he is going to try to depict sumo as something much more incredible than it might really be and therefor gets ridiculed for putting one of the most japanese things so high up on a pedestal. I myself am indifferent. I was invested enough to wanna see everything that happened but also kinda just wishing for some of the old, more interesting plots to advance instead.
