6 April 2019, seen this video tape. Im going to be 98 , within a short time. I knew Lucy Ball, on a personal level and business. I began my career with Shirley Booth, "Hazel" , in 1961, over at NBC Burbank Studio's Los Angeles. The show ran '61-66. '65-66 show was recast and moved over to CBS Studio's in Los Angele. Mrs. Booth, for her own reasons chose to end the show in 1966. It was while we was filming there, I was able to meet Lucy. When our show ended it was Lucy, who ask if I would work on her show. I worked for her till 1974. A remarkable woman. I never was out of work till I sold off my company in 1990s. I owe my career to two women who gave me opportunity to work. God bless them both. Thank you Benjamin Hahn Beverly Hills CA

I am creating a new show that will be released first on local television, then KZbin to retain my rights so I can sell it as a local show in Nevada or Massachusetts. Anyway, I will be back in California next month to graduate and film some episodes. If you would like to do an interview with me, I would be honored to come see you at your convenience I am interested in three things: obviously anything you have to say about Lucille Ball would be great. As a former Californian, I also care about your career and history because of what you witnessed. Lastly, I want to know what it's like for you to live in LA now, and how it was in the past. If you are interested, please let me know. Ivory Louise

As others have said, I would love to see a video with you talking about our past and sharing your wisdom. I am afraid my generation does not respect our elders or our history as they should. I was raised old school by my parents ( I am 23 and my Dad is 73 and my Mom 69), so I have been taught you respect my elders and to listen to the wisdom and lesson they have to share, and I love hearing storys of our past. My sisters and I agree that we where born at the wrong time and should have lived in the 1950s and 1960s. Our parents share their wisdom and often love to playfully rub in the life that once was, and they got to share a bit of. Please if you ever make a video could you comment on this so I will know and be able to see it? I want to learn and listen before it is to late, before there is no one to teach and share. Before (and I dread the day) my Generation is fully in control, though I see it coming closer every day. Thank you sir, and may God bless and keep you!

When she called Desi a "loser," I had to think about what she meant, since he was so financially, artistically, and professionally successful. I think she meant that it was partly that he failed personally, as a husband and father, but also something else - like he didn't think he deserved it all, so he deliberately sabotaged everything, with his reckless womanizing and drinking. That's pretty sad.
@mthivier7 жыл бұрын
Exactly. She was specifically referring to the self-destructive component to his personality (e.g. his excessive drinking, gambling, etc.). She did not mean it as an insult or a personal affront, but merely a factual statement. She was also extremely generous with praise for all of his hard work, building Desilu from the ground up, and basically inventing (what we now think of as) the modern sitcom format, as she states here. She gives him most of the credit, saying that all she did was show up and "play Lucy". So the "loser" remark was not made out of bitterness, but merely to explain what led to the end of their marriage.
@leemcdaniel50727 жыл бұрын
I think what Lucy meant when she called Desi a loser is that to learn the life lessons he needed to learn he had to lose everything he built. Lucy credits Desi for being the brains behind Desilu Productions and that he actually built the company from the ground up, but Hollywood would never give him the credit he deserved. I think Lucy had tremendous respect for Desi. It had to be tremendously awkward discussing her private details about her first marriage to not only the entire nation, but in front of her current husband. But Lucy's style was always candid. She did not shy away from a tough situation. This is what made her so special.

@@mandamank6846 Yes, it is unfortunate that Desi was a serial cheater, but ironically if he had not been a serial cheater, "I Love Lucy" would have never happened, because Lucy was primarily interested in the series in order to keep him home and save her marriage. Also, Desi was a brilliant businessman and innovator. He helped make "I Love Lucy" a success by hiring Vivian Vance [Ethel] and William Frawley [Fred], by helping to create the three-camera system and by insisting that "I Love Lucy" be filmed on high quality film which is the reason why its seen on rerun. In fact, he is the father of the rerun. She had it rough, you are right, but without Desi, Lucy would be a blurb in history, nothing more than a B actress who never amounted to much and of course, without her, he too would be a blurb in history. Probably the best reply here and the one most agree was the real situation. Arnaz was her 'man' and she tried hard to keep their marriage together. But, he also wasn't the marrying kind, and should have stayed single. He loved Ball as much, as he could. However, since she refused to play the submissive role and was the kind of wife Arnaz was expecting from his upbringing in Cuba he ended up finding it impossible to behave like she wanted. In Cuba it was accepted that men screwed around, but that they came home at night and took care of their wife and family. Men would visit hookers a lot and blow off steam, then go home and return to that role. Arnaz second wife was a bit more accommodating with him and let him have his play time. Ball wasn't going to play that game. And, Arnaz wasn't going to change either. They both often cite that as a major reason the marriage failed. Arnaz drinking issues only made things worse and eventually pushed Ball over the edge. She rebounded with Morton, and the two had a relationship with her in charge and him the passive 'wife'. A role Arnaz could never have filled.

Thank you for being there all those nights I couldn't sleep from stress, anxiety and broken heart - I would turn the TV on just for noise so I wouldn't feel alone and " I love Lucy" came on. Your voice, your beautiful red hair and your innocence ALWAYS calmed me, comforted me, you always stayed with me those long lonely nights. Thank you Lucy, and I love Lucy too.

I don't believe for a moment Lucy wanted to part from Desi no matter what. Under all the turmoil, like Burton and Taylor, they loved one another passionately and passion you don't find more than once in a lifetime.... Desi wrote a song for her entitled, "I Love Lucy" and sang it to her on one episode. She was in tears as she stood by him in an embrace....we all could see the love between them like a magnetic force. I don't believe for a moment they were ever that happy the rest of their lives as when the romance was new and the passion was alive.

She doesn't mean Loser in the way we normally think of a loser. She's talking about a self-saboteur, kinda like a gambling addict.
@cacatr44957 жыл бұрын
Yes, but that same thing is what drunks do; they sabotage themselves, they're irresponsible. Irresponsible people, whether they're drinkers, druggies, cheaters or not, whether they're aware of this or not, they sabotage themselves. They ARE losers, that's what the word means. They ruin things, they ruin relationships, and they lose them.
@idontlikesports7 жыл бұрын
I also think it's a generational difference. When She says "looser" it's not what We now think of as someone being a "looser". It's like how Shell Shock became PTSD. Different times, different terms.
@cacatr44957 жыл бұрын
The term has always had the same dictionary definition. The difference is in the modern mindset of the ones using the term. Currently, the social engineers have taught viewers to revile, belittle and demean others = Narcissistic abuse. So people throw around the term, Loser, for anyone they want to revile (means to abuse using language). So the current use is mostly that of belittlement, abuse. Obviously, she wasn't trying to abuse him, she was stating a fact. People can be high achievers and very diligent, and yet emotionally fatalistic and self-sabotaging, emotionally irresponsible with their thoughts and therefore their actions. Lazy and irresponsible are not synonymous. The words are often used together, it's true, but a person can be a high achiever and still be socially, financially, or emotionally irresponsible. Diligent and responsible are two different things. Diligent and wise are two different things. Our dumbed-down lack of nuance in language can leave people thinking that a high achiever cannot be irresponsible, when indeed he can be. High achievers wreck their health and their relationships, even their finances too often. Their emotional root is a sorrowful one. It stems from lack of understanding (wisdom) and a sorrowful fatalistic streak. They see themselves as Losers, less than, inadequate, even though they may have awesome giftings and talents. I also think this attitude can be culturally learned and taught, implanted by the culture. We see this a lot too. It's really not about self-esteem, it's about accurate thinking. We should not have an inflated view of ourselves, we need to discern truth of cause ( be it us, others, or the culture) and correct our thinking, our choices and actions with it.

I was told years ago that an interviewer was once not a person that just sat there to listen to what ever was being said, no. His or her job was rather to guide the conversation to the information requested (and well payed for) by the Network. It is well known that most networks had an agreement with the guest, at times sharing the list of questions BEFOREHAND, to guarantee the guest came prepared to answer and no awkwardness or mumbling was inadvertently shown. (Filming is still expensive. Retakes and editing to achieve flawless work makes it more so. Again, it was frown upon to waste time or film) Now, I think Barbara's prodding could have been the result of Lucy's obvious emotional answers...maybe that wasn't what the Network wanted? During the intro it's said that she doesn't know what to expect. Seems a bit misleading. Lucy was famous for being outspoken and spontaneous. Even if the Network was counting on this, they still only air what they can sell. And maybe Lucy wasn't responding as agreed? When this happens, the interviewer must tactfully regain control of the conversation by picking one of these choices: make the guest give more juicy details (possibly getting an exclusive) or redirect the conversation (by slightly interrupting and trying to change the subject). I agree, Barbara Walters wasn't too subtle. She never was. *Too bad the video was cut short. It would've been better if one could hear the end of what Lucy was saying.

With or without Desi, Lucy was never happy unless she was working. She couldn't stand idleness, to the point where if she had nothing to do, she'd go clean her grown kids' houses. She remained shaken by her impoverished childhood to the point where, when she had money, she didn't know how to let herself enjoy it. She'd occasionally go betting in Las Vegas, but in amounts much below her financial stature. She'd walk around at the conclusion of Desilu stockholders' meetings gathering the pencils on the tables and return them to a supply closet herself. "Why not? I paid for them." "Too much money confuses things. I was happier when I only owned two coats." The pinch-penny that Jack Benny pretended, Lucy actually was.

My ex-wife is a workaholic; and she thinks work is the only reason for existence. Not surprising, the people at her work love her. They don't love her for her personality, which is nonexistent. The only thing they ever say about her is what a good worker she is. Chinese are the perfect slaves I tell you. They only work; and have no desire to talk to people around them, because they have nothing to say. I have heard that the chinese were cloned, in order to create the perfect human slave; and that really would not surprise me at all.

Desi Arnaz was amazing. He skipped rehearsals because he was so busy running the business but would show up, do a quick run through and give a spot on and impeccable comic performance in a language that was not his own. Listen to her full comment. She's not calling him a bum; what she's saying is Desi was self-destructive: "I married a loser. He could win, win . . . high, high, high stakes. He could work very hard. He was brilliant. But he had to lose. . . . [He was] sweet, generous -- overly generous -- but he had to lose. He had to fail at everything he built up. Everything he built, he had to break down. And he still claims he's the same way." By the way, she and Desi remained the closest of friends until his death, speaking on the phone every week.

@Edster737 жыл бұрын
What she means by saying "I married a loser" is not what some people are thinking... she doesn't mean that he was a "bum" but that, deep down, Desi had a subconscious need to "lose" everything that mattered... there was clearly a mental block & a feeling of not being good enough or deserving enough to not only have what he acquired but to keep it... many people have this sort of mental block for, deep down, they don't feel deserving or worthy of being happy. I think this is what she was implying. Had she meant "loser" as in the sense of being a "bum", she wouldn't have defended him in the first part of the interview when she speaks of how he was unfairly attacked. That's my take on it anyway...
@gloriaseramulet46837 жыл бұрын
She said it, he had a business mind, he was the brain behind their show, he had to struggle when he came with nothing, his family had to leave Cuba, where his father was a politician, now you come here, you have the brains but some people did not think he was smart based on pure racism, Lucy was able to see far ahead and she knew this man could take her places and make money. Their kids never had to work much because their father never sold the rights to their show, the inherited enough to live comfortably, it was his idea to use the third camera for re runs. She sounded bitter, and I think life had been very generous with her.
@diane92477 жыл бұрын
I agree completely, Edster, in fact she elaborated on that after she said it. The poor quality of the video makes it hard to follow everything, but she did clarify.
@Edster737 жыл бұрын
@GLORIA SERA MULET Actually he did sell the rights to the show back then... they no longer owned the show by the 60s... CBS does... and there's more to a happy marriage & home life than just being a provider... he drank a lot & had affairs... this meant that he was hardly ever at home with her or the kids... his position as head of Desilu meant many hours away from home but with what little time he did have available for her & the kids, he chose to spend with other women... it's fortunate for both of them that this didn't happen during the AIDS epidemic or their story would've ended very differently... Mind you, I'm sure she had her problems too. Being shuffled around as a child from family to family while poor probably imprinted on her some "worthiness" issues too, so yeah, I'm sure she was a pain in the butt & could be a bitch too, but much of the conflict rests with him too. It took two to tango & clearly they both had their issues (welcome to the human race). It's a wonder they were able to accomplish all that they had. For that alone they deserve to be commended & remembered even after all these years.
@Edster737 жыл бұрын
@DIANE9247 Thanks Diane... yeah, the video title is misleading & the way she said it is as well, but she was speaking truthfully & matter-of-factly, not bashing him. It's as if she was saying: "I totally respect this man for his accomplishments, and he accomplished a lot in spite of how he was mistreated (which wasn't fair), but he was his own worst enemy... he had to sabotage himself so that in the end he'd lose everything and anything of value to him. He proved himself worthy to everyone but himself. The demon inside of himself just couldn't accept that he deserved what he had worked for so he had to ultimately lose it all".

ITA I think folks are so used to people being "politically correct" when they speak, that they are just jumping on one somewhat harsh phrase, an ignoring the context it was being used in. She was trying to explain BOTH the good & the bad of a man she obviously loved deeply & still respected greatly. To the point of repeatedly explaining all the good he did. She just was being honest and trying to explain the good & the bad. Anyone who can't hear the love & respect for Desi, and is only focusing on a phrase to explain a complicated man, is missing the point IMHO

not all of them, the last one was fully because of Lucy, as Desi had already sold his half of the production company to her, and she was the one who green lit the production for Rodenberry. They had a hard pitch to NBC to begin with as they didn't think Americans would be interested in such a series. Plus, the point she mentions of him being a loser is because he would build up stuff like that, then tear it all down- case in point him wanting out of the marriage, the company, everything. That's what she's talking about he has to lose, he couldn't handle being successful. That's why he wanted out of everything THEY had built up. He wasn't fully alone in all this, without her acting that show never would have taken off, and since they owned the production company with no one to sell the shows to, they'd have lost it all. She made that show, and the company successful. That's why they were a team, quit acting like it's all him, without her he'd have been still a band player with no production company.

There is two sides to every story. This is only giving Lucy's side of the story. My grandfather worked for RKO studios before Desi purchased them in the 1950's. He worked on the production crew as a camera operator. But he worked on the Bonanza set. He used to tell many stories of how badly Lucy treated the people on the set. As he put it she was a royal bitch. But he said that Desi was totally opposite. He said once they had a big fight on the set because Desi gave the set crews a Christmas bonus and she wanted to take it back. But Desi refused. So don't believe Lucy was the innocent victim that she used to make herself out to be. Desi was a good friend of my grandfather.

@anoop prashar, people who self-sabotage do it mainly because of a lack of self-esteem. They believe they're not worthy of what they have -- success and relationships -- so they sabotage them. When they ultimately fail, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Desi, Sr. was a "loser" because he lost out to his demons--dual addictions to sex and alcohol. He did attempt to overcome these, with his son's help, at the end of his life but way too late to have attempted a reunification with Lucy. However, they remained friends til the end and were loving grandparents.

She was the first woman to ever run a studio. She had to be extra hard in order to get men to respect her because she was a woman. If she was a man, they would’ve called her a “great leader” but because she’s a woman, she’s a “b*tch.” The problem is, people like you have created this image of her being like her character on “I love Lucy” which she was nothing like that.

True, they stayed together for a great many years, but he always knew & accepted that Desi was the true love of her life. My Dad knew Gary well in his youth & my folks went out with Lucy & Gary in Vegas. I don't want to be nasty, but let's just say they didn't see a lot of love between them. Combine them with how Lucy always spoke of Desi, vice versa, what the kids say, and that film of them playing with the Grandkids late in life in the pool (a MUST see) and I think she was comfortable with Gary, but her love was always Desi!!!

Nobody ever mentioned the racism Desi faced. He was the only actor on the show that was never given a nomination or award. He was as talented as the other actors on the show. Yes he failed as a husband n father but he was a very talented actor that was never recognized by Hollywood because he was Hispanic.
@rayarena8795 жыл бұрын
April @ I don't think that Desi wasn't given a nomination because of "racism," it's just that the straight guy in any comedy is usually overlooked. Desi was in the same situation that Sonny and Cher was in years later. We now know that Sonny was the brains behind Sonny and Cher. He wrote many of their hits, created the comedy routine and was the businessman. Cher let him do everything and followed his lead. Like Desi, Sonny was, also, overlooked and underappreciated. And while Desi was a brilliant businessman, the brains behind "I Love Lucy" and a real go-getter, he wasn't the most talented actor around. In terms of pure talent, Lucy, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley were more talented, thus the nomination or award.

what? they've talked about that over and over ad nauseum since the 1960s!!! Lucy never let the public forget what was said and done to her husband.

Why do you automatically equate that to racism? I don’t get it. Just run right to that right off the bat. Out of all the actors on the show he was the weakest.
@rondaallen72115 жыл бұрын
@@ebok98 because when someone won't buy your show or even give you a chance because they won't air a show with a Cuban husband, that's called racism. when you have to finance your own dream because of all the closed doors based on Desi's ethnicity, and have that said to your face, that is racism. the definition of racism, in fact. lucky in this case, racism worked out well for Desilu.
