Just wanna say a couple of things for anyone considering these two options: I've bought the BX5 D3's, and not heard the E5's in person, so I will talk mostly about the BX5's. The BX5's are getting a lot of hate, but I believe unreasonably so, they are really excellent monitors for the price, and they are as flat as they seem in the video, which is excellent for a first pair of studio monitors. In my opinion, I would hesitate now to get the E5's if the video is correct, because now having got the BX5's, they seem very equally voiced, and so I imagine the E5's are quite hyped up there. The mid range is particularly good on the BX5's, and I've found it very helpful in my mixing (though I also check on many sources like headphones etc. which is normal to do anyway). The high frequency takes a week or so to break in. A couple of things to bear in mind: they have rear firing ports, which I didn't realise when I bought them and I don't have lots of space. However you don't need tons of room, just about 18 inches if you can spare it away from the wall. Don't get monitors if you haven't given any thought to treating your room, these would sound awful (as would any monitors) if I hadn't put up any panels. Don't buy egg box style foam, watch PresentDayProduction's video about free acoustic treatment and how to make some panels - timber, and rockwool or earthwool is easy to find in a hardware store. And also watch their stuff about panel placement, that's half of the work. Definitely do this though, cos having monitors make a tremendous difference, but not if there's no consistency to your room. TL;DR: From experience, the BX5's are very well balanced, and though I have not heard the E5's in person, they would appear to be overly bright relatively speaking.

Awesome and I agree with you! I have the BX8" and my room is treated and quite ideal for this size. At first I was expecting a lot of bass, but this is my first time getting an 8 after letting go of my Yamaha HS5. Surprisingly, it sounds sooo natural and neutral! I listened to my old mixes and boy, they are thin! Now I can judge and adjust my bass and kick properly without worry. I highly recommend 8 (any brand will do depends on your preference) to anyone who has the budget and are working in the mastering role. Now I defy the myth telling everybody that 8" monitors will ruin your mix because of the power of the bass (at least in a small untreated space). I can now prove that 8" monitors are actually VERY very helpful! They give you data in the sub bass region which a 4 and 5 struggle to provide unless you're A/B-ing to hear if it will sound good on 4, 5" consumer speakers in the real world. It's not because you want bass to party but you need bass to judge the mix (and it's not even hyped), and it's not wrong to desire and want an 8 because you want to finish a quality and competitive mix or master a mix faster without fatiguing your ears. And as a guy who have listened to a pair of E5, Rokit 5 (G2 and 3), Mackie CR 3, HR824mk2, HS5, NS10s, 8" Genelecs (wonderful but can't afford), and 8 such as the BX in the price range of a 5 plus they're a pair is unbelievably a steal for the price but sounds serious like those in the mid-level price range. Anyway, I still A/B with my Auratone 5c and headphones... and car, LOL!

Feels like the Presonus lacks low end compared to the M-audio but saying M-audio is closer to the mix is debatable. The lack of low end on the Presonus makes it sound a bit harsher but if you focus on midrange and high end, I feel like it is more precise and accurate. For exemple listen to the guitar at 3:50 on the M-audio and on the Presonus
@demigodbga62803 жыл бұрын
Interesting. To me the M-Audio monitors do sound marginally closer to the original source (especially when listening to vocals) and the PreSonus monitors (in my opinion) over emphasis the high end, making the vocals sound cleaner than they actually are. If you listen to the "Long Drive" demo, the PreSonus make the vocals sound crispy but when you listen to the source track they're actually quite warm. That's just what I hear in my headphones though...

For anyone using these to compare, often the source track seems to be in stereo while the recorded version much less so. I found that setting my pc audio to mono made for a fairer comparison, when listening back on headphones. Might be worth suggesting in future videos! With neither of these producing the bass of a sub, I'm leaning towards the Eris E5 for better vocal reproduction and clarity, and using headphones to check the lower end if necessary. Thanks for all of these videos!

I love this idea and it shows a great comparison. But the cylinder stands are a perfect place for lows to resonate, which is why the Auralex isolation monitor foam pads would've helped a lot. Auralex pads are 2 inches thick. The foam underneath your monitors look about 1/4 inch thick, that's not enough. Is the microphone sitting on a box stand? The microphone should be isolated mid-air. Infinite focus on your camera can keep the microphone and stand in focus as well. Anyways, I'm hearing a boost in the 300hz range on the M-Audio, and a boost in the 4000hz range on the Presonus, but the hi-hats seem more separated and clear on the M-Audio.

It's just to get a vague idea of the difference between the two as they are almost similar in terms of price. Of course it doesn't reflect the sound they will produce in YOUR room but it's still better than having to spend 400 euros to try both at home... With this video you can figure out that the Presonus Eris E5 is (in my opinion) more adapted to a small room and mixing precisely whereas the M-Audio BX5 D3 will be a better choice if you have more acoustic space to cover, don't need to be too careful about the low-frequencies (neighbours...) and generally work on mixes involving "deeper" low-frequencies (electro, brass, some kinds of keyboards, etc...)

To my ears, the M-Audio monitors are closer to the original sound. They both have about the same characteristics in the high end, however the Presonus lacks natural low end warmth that would be nice for mixing. I used both of these. The Eris had better midrange transient response for better, sharper clarity, but despite that the M-audios did better on piano overall subjectively speaking. However be cautioned that the Eris is fundamentally flawed for a monitor design. It has a front-firing bass port. This design in most cases creates enough turbulence which eff's up the woofer's bass and low mid-end response on almost any speaker that's trying to be an accurate monitor. Placing a port next to a speaker cone is a terrible idea and will always result in destructive and constructive interference - both modes are bad because of unintended wave-front distortions no matter how the port is designed. Front ports like this can only be designed to work together effectively with the driving cone for a small range of frequencies and amplitudes to "artificially boost the bass response", but the frequencies surrounding this narrow band will be affected significantly. The problem is very obvious in these Eris monitors. Also as is well known ported designs are inherently not conducive for tight, punchy bass response with minimum resonances. Front firing ports are always a poor design choice for an seasoned engineer to be forced to make based on his marketing team's recommendations for so-claimed higher sales potentials on a smaller, already compromised speaker. Everyone wants big bass from a small driver, and because tricks like this can be an illusion for most buyers which satisfies their untrained ears, it's a no-brainer for the marketing folks.
