Well I was listening this comparison video with headphones so I could hear it properly. The M-Audio sounds a lot more mellow and detailed. Yamaha sounds like an empty wooden box.

I must say this is a very accurate comparison. I have been thinking of upgrading my monitors lately just for the hell of it. Currently I have the M-Audio BX5 D3’s only my cones are red instead of black. Long story short, while the bx5s were closer to the source track, u will notice from 1:42 - 1:55 that the Bx5s sound way more boxy on the low end of the vocal, as opposed too the Hs5 where it sounds considerably more ‘crispy’ bx5s are great and have an incredible bass response. But notice in the comparison that is not always a good thing. I’ve been fighting the boxy Bx5 sound on my vocals for about a year. ( a lot of extra eq-ing) it is never good to have to work backwards guys. Hope this helped!!! Bx5s are good tho no doubt!

Listening on Sennheiser HD 300 monitoring headphones. M-Audio wins but if I owned them I would want to EQ the bass slightly down and the high mids slightly up. Just ever so slightly. Thing is, these are so different sounding that it would work having both pair for mixing. Go back and forth between the two. The Yamahas sound great for highs and the M-Audio sound better for the lower frequencies.

i have the bx8a's and have had them for almost ten years. keep in mind i bought them because they sound great. HOWEVER... after all these years im convinced the high frequencies are absolute shit for monitoring. They are GREAT for playback and audio consumption, they are horrible for audio monitoring and frequency analyzing.

Yeah, call me nuts but IMO, the Yamaha's are far likely to better serve the intended purpose of studio mixing since they are flat and true. The M Audio sounds like what you might finally be hearing in your car or home hi fi. Yamaha's are pretty crystal clear throughout with pretty awesome clarity.

Not when you are comparing them to source audio, the Yamaha sounds nothing like the source audio, that too is misleading... The Yamaha is super tiny in the bass region, mixing a song with one of those would lead to you adding too much bass to compensate imo, and causing the audio to become muddy on other speakers.

I have the bx8 and my music mate uses bx5, his bx5 sound good but a bit bass heavy. In this comparison we can hear how much the hs5 pair sound clear with better separation and clearer voices, imaging is a step upo from the bx5. The bx5 costs anyway less than the hs5, so maybe the price difference is justified.

I was Just saying hs5 sounds cleaner in mids and highs because the bx have a small bump in the lower region that makes them Warmer. I would anyway blindly pick up the BX5 over the hs5 a thousand times, the HS5 are the kind of speakers I'd never like to have on my desk.

Thank you for the test. Listening on Sennheiser HD 280. IMO Yamahas are clearly superior - much clearer mids, while in BX5 mids are huffled and the bass steamrolls everything. You can always add sub later to boost bass, but perfect mids are essential, there is no way around it..

I think out of the two Yamaha's are quite flat in sound which is the primsry purpose of havin a pair of studio monitors for production purpose. Whereas M AUDIO are more punchy on bass end and bodies the mids more than yamaha. Also, i heard that m audio getting hot quickly running above 50%. Something which is not favorable. But i think Yamaha give more true and natural sound. But BX sounds full and amazing.

They have the acoustic switch with is actually a high pass EQ, it cuts 80Hz and below by the values indicated. Just don't use them on flat.

Guys, are you serious?!!? This is studio monitors comparison, not some hi-fi speakers. Of course Yamaha is muuuutch better for studio work (mixing) than M-audio... This is not about which sounds "better". This is about which one help you make the job done easier. The flawoured, warmer sound of M-audio's isn't any better in this case.

To show which speaker have the more detailed displaying of sound ist not the goal of this test. The goal is which speaker is more near at the original recording. And there i think M-Audio is much more closer. On the Yamahas it could happend that you do too much bass in your mix cause they play to less bass. That would be at M-Audio not happend. But the Yamaha sure could display more detailed. But i think M-Audio would be a good additional reference to check if your sound track have good frequency response balance.

Hello bro. Do you recommend the Yamaha h5 as a box for listening to music? I am not interested in audio monitoring at the moment, but if I do in the future, I can purchase the second box. I found the h5 more interesting with only one box due to the power provided compared to some other types like edifer that close the price, the range power offer is similar and don't give such a faithful sound. NOTE: I live in an apartment and I play the guitar with a 7w mini katana that have more power than enough for me. In other words, I don't need a high-powered box. Thanks.

alex tes my brother is a dj and he has been around really good audio including his pro gear and when I had him hear my bx8’s he was really happy with them . I was in the market for a jbl sub before I got these but I no longer needed to buy a sub . THEY ARE FINE THE WAY THEY ARE . You could buy a little $60 mixer to where you could control the low end and amp it up a bit more . But to answer your question if they are stronger on bass than the b20s? I don’t know . But they are really strong . Most of the time I have to turn down the low end so I won’t be a disturbance to my neighbors . I’m sure if you buy the bx8’s you’ll be very satisfied!

I am also a little bit critical. I see the problem in the microphone frequency response. But if this was measured in in the room and the room interferences are calculated out at the microphone recording. I think you get an aproximally impression. Important is that you get the source track balanced on your speakers on which you hear the video. So than you can check how far away the tested speakers from the original source track. Or did so see any other problems in this methodic ?

The HS5 exaggerate the high frequencies. If you mix your song with an exaggerated tweeter like these HS5 has, your song will end up muddy when you play it on other speakers.
