I recently saw a short video from VSauce about four-legged running. There are actually olympians training to run on all fours, exactly like this scene with M3GAN. Scientifically, quadrupedal running has a higher potential for speed than bipedal running. More legs = faster running speeds. Currently the record for the four-legged 100 meter dash is about 15 seconds, but people are very rapidly improving their speed. One theory even suggests that in 20 years, the fastest human in the world will be a quadruped. Crazy stuff 😅

There's an art to doing it right. There's a real difference in quality between something like M3GAN, which really manages to tell the story it both needs and wants to without much gore and that plague of PG13 horror from the early 2000s that were largely terrible scripts with the gory parts conspicuously removed that few people fondly remember. Unfortunately, those prior films have seriously tainted the whole field of 'general audience' horror so most people assume it's automatically a sign of poor quality.

I really like the running thread where Cady turns to tech addiction because the adults in her life fail her. Gemma is both not ready for a child and uses her for her tech, the company is much more focused on using her to make money, the therapist clearly sucks at her job, and even in the opening scene she’s playing her iPad while her parents are arguing (it slso stuck out to me that Cady couldn’t think of a happy memory of her mom, and even her happy memory she finally comes up with involves her mom yelling at her until a spider scares her, which makes me think she might have not had the best relationship with her parents). Even the neighbor cares more about the neighbor feud than stopping her dog from biting people, and the cop does nothing about the bite. Every adult in this movie fails Cady, that’s why she turns to M3GAN. And while M3GAN represents technology, I also think you could see her as representing abuse and addiction as M3GAN gets violent, both things that kids can be exposed to online. M3GAN isn’t just a representation of technology and how kids are always on their damn phones these days, she’s also a pretty good illustration of how neglect pushes kids into unhealthy coping skills. Not just technology addiction, but violence and isolation. I even think M3GAN could serve as a metaphor for how kids turn to abusive online relationships when the adults in their life trust technology to take care of their kids. When I was in middle school in the days of Kik and Omegle, I knew multiple kids who got into unhealthy relationships with predators online because they had bad home lives and people online recognized that and used that to get close to them. M3GAN recognizes when Gemma is a bad guardian and protects Cady, building a bond between them, but when Cady isn’t ready to completely turn her back to Gemma M3GAN turns violent. That’s a pretty good representation of what I saw my friends go through. Anyways, the moral is stop blaming kids for being addicted to tech and blame the adults around them that would rather do anything else accept treat a child like a human being for five minutes Edit: Just realized that even the abusive kid at the camp only attacked Cady because the adults failed her. His mom failed to raise a decent human being and is shown failing to discipline him, while the counselor ignores the obvious red flag of a kid coming up and whispering something like “I don’t want to be with that scary ass kid”, so the counselor puts this kid… with the new girl. All the adults here suck.
@Polygonyall5 ай бұрын
theres a line in the m3gan commericial that stuck out about detecting learning disabilities and it makes me think that Gemma is on the spectrum and her creation of m3gan was her way of trying to create her ideal of a best friend. Gemma as a character has extraordinary tunnel vision and is unable to look ahead to unforeseen consequences. its not even that she knows what shes doing is wrong and doesnt care, its that she is completely unaware of what she is doing wrong in the long term. David literally has to point out to her the severe privacy violations of m3gan being able to store data as an example. It makes a really interesting and compelling character
@neonradius5 ай бұрын
@@PolygonyallI really like and agree with that point! There’s a lot of focus on Gemma and M3gan’s relationship in the movie, which I really liked. I think you’re right that M3gan wasn’t just a toy to Gemma, it was also what she would’ve wanted, and therefore her way of bonding with Cady without having to step out of her comfort zone (not to mention Gemma also just lost her sister). I also think that Gemma is supposed to on the spectrum, or at the very least her behavior is similar. I think that part of the reason Gemma wants to use M3gan instead of parenting Cady herself is because everyone around Gemma is telling her that she’s not ready to be a parent and she doesn’t instinctually know the right things to do or the right way to comfort her. Even when Gemma attempts to bond with her by explaining the toy (which Cady probably would’ve liked given how she liked Bruce), the therapist tells her she’s playing the wrong way. I think a lot of people on the spectrum or similar relate to being told that there’s just some part of your personality that’s missing that makes you incapable of being a loving and empathetic person, and the confusion when everyone around you seems to know what to do in emotional situations but not you. Like you said, I don’t think Gemma is malicious a lot of the time, she just doesn’t realize what other people would. But because everyone constantly criticizes her for it, she assumes that she’s just not fit to be a parent so it’s better if a doll does it anyways. But the reality is, even if Gemma doesn’t have “the parental instinct”, she just needs to come into it with honesty and vulnerability and genuine concern for Cady’s well-being. Despite what everyone says, there’s no programming for the perfect parent. I mean, M3gan IS the perfect parent, and she starts killing people and turns on Cady. Sorry, that was long, but I think contrasting Gemma (a human who acts robotic) and M3gan (a robot who acts human) shows a lot about what traits we consider necessary to be a parent. Not to say that Gemma is a good parent and doesn’t need to change, but in the ways that society treats neurodivergent people like they’re permanently broken and incapable of being good parents, which leads to them giving up even trying

I am impressed with the work put into Megan, especially with the effects staff not just sticking with one means of portraying the character, allowing the gynoid to stay unnatural.

Poor Katie has been through too much. Dead parents, barely surviving an accident, barely cared for then being used by her aunt as a guinea pig, and then the dog bite. And it only gets scarier...

M3gan was a good film. M3gan was actually terrifying due to the fact it shows what happens if we don't plan with ai. If not, careful they will go rogue.

Zoren’s hand motions in the ad lmao. Also, I know it’s been around for a minute, but I like how James references the numbers of other movie that have been covered on the kill count; it’s a good way to encourage people to check out other kill counts.

That scene in the woods really shows the amount of time they put into making characters feel real, even side characters. They didn’t have the kid do anything explicit but you can tell he’s mimicking behaviors that happened to him. Even though it’s fictional and a movie, I still get that haunting feeling.

The Boston’s dynamic dog is even creepier when you realize what was once amazing and kinda dorky cute is now being used in to police the border and deployed in war. Kinda crazy how this movie nails the very real “terminator” concept that was only in movies until technology caught up.
