Hello and THANK YOU for making this video. I got a "rash" on a new Explorer ST and the new wheel would be $1200.00 bucks at my dealer. Ford dealer service advisor told me he had a service that could fix the wheel, but I did not believe it. He said I would never know the difference. He was right...and I could not figure out how he did it. This explains what the Ford dealer did, and I feel great understanding it now. Great video. What a great find! Wish I had run into someone like that when my TT careened down a long, steep, snowy hill a couple months after I got it. I ended up buying snow tires of course to protect the remainder of the car and occupants but it was a horse out of the locked barn as far as the rims were concerned. Since this info/service was unavailable at the time, I painted the rims Alizarin Crimson (as in the song by Donovan Leitch ca. 1968) with the caps a very bright yellow. Blue first gen Audi TT (no air dam) so it was a truly primary clown car. I was pissed until I liked it. But it cost a small fortune when the lease was up. What an uncomfortable car.

People laugh when they see playing cards in my mechanic and bodywork toolboxes, as if I plan of wasting time on the job by playing cards. I used them for masking bodywork, and also for things like getting the nasty grit sitting on a ring out from between a piston and the cylinder wall if I'm doing a head. Also pretty good for cleaning out dried buffing compound from between a fascia and a body panel. In a pinch I've used them as precise body filler spreaders and also as spacers when I'm putting a fascia back on. Pretty good and cheap tool.

@JayH where's your video on how to repair wheels then??? Let's see it.
@JayH77452 жыл бұрын
@martin I take care of my car rims, I don't do (hide the damage) work. I baby all my cars and keep them spotless inside and out. Hand washed, hand waxed and detailed by me on a regular basis. Every car I've ever owned looked near mint when I traded them off for new models. Even cars that I owned a long time. Better resale value. Cars are a major investment and you have to take care of them.
@Mardy722 жыл бұрын
@@JayH7745 well good on you. Sometimes though, in the real world, accidents happen. This man is just showing people how to fix one of these boo-boos quickly and cheaply to get the car looking semi-presentable. It's not a professional repair, just something that the average person can do at home and feel good about doing after an unfortunate mishap. If you didn't know it had been repaired, you probably wouldn't even notice. Give the man his due for helping people save some money rather than criticizing his video.

Thanks a lot, man! I did this to the rims of my 2010 vw cc which I just bought with onlu 50k on it, but the rims were scratched and dinged worse than yours. The only thing I modified is I just went ahead and scuffed the entire rim with sandpaper 120 after I sanded the bondo filler. The scotchbrite is not enough to get some foothold for the primer. I also did not use the primer filler because it left uneven areas and I did not want to sand it again, so I used a regular primer for metal (epoxy primer). Other than those, they came out perfect for me. Of course, some areas I over sprayed with both paint and clear coat. I tried to follow your advice to start with light sprays first...but I got overzealous.

Why mask off everything behind the wheel and the wheel nuts? Taking it off is much easier. Also, you can see the filler underneath the paint where you havent sanded down enough. You only want the filler in the hole/scratch. Anything proud of the scratch will show through and will look bumpy. You need to sand the filler flat with the surface of the wheel. Another 10 mins and the wheel would have looked great!
@vergecryptocurrency45525 жыл бұрын
It took 20 seconds to mask the brakes. Would have been longer to jack it up and remove nuts. Then put them back on after. And you still need to mask tyre if you take it off.
@bootcampeddie5 жыл бұрын
Yes but when you crack the nuts to take the wheel off the paint will pull and rip off from around the hole. Im a sprayer and would always take the wheel off to perform such a task. Each to their own I suppose ;)

Your initial actions are good.you should always key the surface with at least 180 grit for the filler.then sand with 180 grading down to 500.after this you always apply primer to cover the filler.if your doing this at home with an aerosol you should choose the highest build primer available to try to cover any pinholes in your filler.ALL FILLER HAS PINHOLES.then sand with 320 grit down to 500 for a smooth surface ready for paint.remember to always apply topcoat to seal the base and acheive the desired look🍻

@@ladyshrink22222 lol I drive a camaro. It is very low to the ground and has a shitty blind spots in the back right and left rear. I also can't see the ground directly in front of me or beside me and I can't see over any vehicles in front of me if I'm too close. I think it is more bad depth perception. Spatial awareness has nothing to do with being able to see the curb with your eyes. You need to be aware it is there and how far away it is but you can see that on the approach. I curbed my rim one time at a gas station and it was the most embarrassing moment of my life. Every single person looked at me like I was a douchebag. And I looked like one. I paid to get my rim fixed before I found this video. Should have tried it myself but I am unsure if it works with aluminum rims.

When I had to get a couple of Toyota Alloys repaired there was a code stamped on the wheel that identified the paint finish. Not sure if that applies to all alloys but worth investigating as a starting point.
@maxmillion42166 жыл бұрын
That's why you take it to a pro. They have all the paint codes for all different types of cars and wheels. Besides you don't have to paint the wheels the same color. it's your call on that one.
