Vegan six years, on a minimalism journey and trying to be zero waste. In January 2017 plastic bags will be outlawed when shopping on our little island of Puerto Rico, USA. yay!🌴🌴🌴🌞🌴🌴🌴

Mother Earth they already charge about ten cents per plastic bags! most of the people bring their own bags or none at all, well at least in california.
@TM-ng2bz7 жыл бұрын
Where I live (not USA) plastic bags cost, but people buy them quite often still. I don't think that is a waste at all, because it's what most people use as trash bags. If I have enough bags, I can bring some from home, but quite often I need them. Also if I travel I put my clothes in a plastic bag to protect from water if it rains and to separate clean clothes from dirty ones. If I don't buy plastic bags when shopping I need to buy them separately.

I've been obsessed with watching minimalism videos for a few months now and slowly started incorporating the ideas into my lifestyle. About two weeks ago I made the big jump and just cleared out my apartment. 17 bags of clothes, shoes, bedding, and gosh I don't know what else. (Just goes to show we collect what we don't need when you don't even remember everything you've gotten rid of!) what've I stopped buying? Everything! Lol. But really- I have. Because i am using up all that I kept. I won't be buying cups anymore (i invested in a glass water bottle and two tervis cups) won't be buying more clothes til what I have don't fit (weightloss) and then will only be basics. I don't buy knickknacks, decor, blankets. I love blankets. But I live in Florida. We don't need 50! I've condensed my bedding to two sets. Makeup I'll use up and only repurchase the basics. Same for haircare. I only use 2 items for facial. Cleanser and moisturizer for eyes. Utensils I keep 2 plates, 2 bowls, and use 1 utensil of each. I plan on buying to-go ware and donating all my other utensils to shelters and goodwill. Minimizing has been tough but so liberating :)

When you were talking about fast fashion shopping and everything, I was just thinking about how much time and money I'm actually spending on fashion and that was like A LOT! Specially when it comes to time, because that's a thing no one could gain back, the amount of time I dedicated to following fashion by watching youtubers or following fashion bloggers doesn't make any sense to me any more. I'm not a minimalist but this video literally inspired me to stop spending my time and money on fashion. Thanks a lot :)

I've drastically reduced the amount of clothing I buy, but then I went through a period where I basically just replaced clothes with makeup. But I'm working on this now. The Canadian Diabetes Association has this program called Clothesline where there are these big red bins where you can donate clothes, shoes, etc. I've got a few in my town and estimate that I'll end up donating about ten large garbage bags of clothing when I go through my wardrobe.

No unnecessary makeup No bottled water (and only exceptional soda, like once or twice a month) No more DVDs unless I am sure I'll watch them a thousand times (I'll buy the new Harry Potter and bought Deadpool) No excessive book shopping No plastic bags (If I forgot mine, I'll get a cardboard box from the store) No more canned beans (I buy them dried and use as many as I need, and they look pretty in the mason jars in the kitchen :D ) No more sugary muesli stuff (We have an awesome brand in Germany, called MyMuesli and they make costume muesli exactly how you want it, all eco friendly, a bit on the pricey side but if you don't eat it that often totally worth it) No more shower stuff just because it smells nice. Well.... sure because it smells nice but only if the other one is almost empty and then just one. I got rid of a lot of books, dvds and my wii U lately because I don't use it, and it hurt so much but now... it's totally worth it. I'll get the new nintendo console anyways :D so why hanging on to stuff you don't use (Well... I'd never sell my N64 because I just love it, it's nostalgia....)

Chloe M Hauls are the worst! I stopped watching Zoella a while back because she's a bad influence for people wanting to reduce the amount of unnecessary stuff they consume. And really, so many of those people get the products for free or are paid to advertise them, so it's not much different from a commercial on tv -- and yet we get so sucked in! I've noticed that a lot of companies are starting to make fake vlog and haul-type videos for their ads now so that they can trick people into buying their products. Shady!

This is one of your older videos but I was brought here by you're new-updated one. I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel because it's inspiring seeing other people trying to pave the way towards the same/a similar journey like mine. I've been cutting out all plastic from my life and trying to go zero waste. This has inevitably kept me from buying any processed foods and has made me much more aware of how much plastic is really around us in our everyday lives. I've bought a shampoo bar, don't use conditioner, and like you, only use coconut oil for mostly everything. I'm also going to try more vegan dishes, as I'm already a vegetarian, and see where it takes me! Thanks for the inspiration.
@korecelium5 жыл бұрын
I've switched to vegetarianism, stopped buying fast fashion, and wherever possible, I try to limit new purchases or get things secondhand. Currently I'm working on switching to more natural cleaners, and after that, I can hopefully get to decluttering my home and becoming more mindful about what groceries I buy. It's super nice to find a community of people striving to do the same!

Great video! On my journey to minimalism, I stopped buying tampons and use a Diva Cup. I buy most of my clothing from thrift stores. I carry a steel cup of water everywhere I go, because the idea of buying bottled water when I already pay for tap water is absurd. I also carry a fork and spoon in my purse to avoid using plastic cutlery and I don't use plastic straws. I use reusable shopping bags. I only put shampoo/conditioner in my hair. I only use foundation and mascara. Oh, and I've been vegetarian for 18 years.

So far, I've stopped buying disposables like paper towels, tissues, Q tips, tampons, plastic wrap, ziplock bags, and straws. All of these things have reusable alternatives. I've also stopped buying toiletries, and I'm going to switch to zero waste alternatives as they run out. I make my own laundry detergent (Lauren Singer's recipe) and dishwashing detergent (Bea Johnson's recipe). I made reusable dryer balls by covering old tennis balls in aluminum foil (haven't used them yet, I hope they work!). I haven't bought clothing in a while, and plan to shop second-hand if I need anything in the future. I also try my best to shop package-free in the grocery store by sticking to things I can buy in the bulk section and produce without packaging. If I need something that comes packaged, I choose a glass bottle rather than a plastic one. I use the library rather than buying books. Lots of great changes happening! :)

Hi Madeleine, thanks for all your super useful tips! I use soap nuts instead of laundry detergent and fabric softer. They are sooooo good, easy to use, zero waste. Just pop 4 nuts in a bag the come with, into your laundry machine and off you go. They will leave your clothes clean, soft and scentless. If you want you can put a few drops of essential oil in the bag before you place it. £9 a kilo which will last a year of washes!!! Brilliant! Also as a nail polish I use Nailberry, no bad chemicals and let oxygen flow through your nails. As a toner I use pure rose water. Hope this helps! Jo

Sweet video! I've never been a fashionista, but have thoroughly enjoyed my own minimalist journey. I think you're right though, Madeleine, some parts of our journey sound similar! I got rid of all my make-up, lotions, and nail polish around the same time I started no 'poo (August 2014), and the ball started rolling. Now I shower with water-only and a soft, natural bristle brush for exfoliating my skin, coconut oil and aloe for my face and body, no bra (6-8 months ago, I can't really remember), soap nuts for laundry, Castile soap, vinegar, and baking soda for everything else. I also wear only the most basic flip flops to protect the bottom of my feet, because I'm started enjoying the 'barefoot' lifestyle too (it takes a few months for your feet to adjust and strengthen, but my arches raised, and plantar fasciitis and the numbing issues with my toes went away). Vegan, minimalist, no 'poo, no bra, barefoot... I'm a modern day hippie! LOL!

I was vegan first and then discovered minimalism, although it seemed like an inevitable extension of my desire to reduce my carbon footprint. It's really awesome to see more vegan minimalists out there! I'm doing a second (or third?) massive declutter, and it's incredible how much stuff I find I've accumulated in just half a year - through people giving gifts or me just losing my way a bit. There's also so much that I couldn't seem to bear parting with the first time around, but now I've learned more about letting go, so it's possible to say goodbye even to things like old mementos. Thanks for this inspiring video!

Thanks for talking about these issues! I did the same thing with watching beauty KZbinrs and although I still love them, I'm trying to change my media consumption to minimize the influence it has on my shopping habits. I'm working on reducing food packaging by bringing my own containers to our coop to fill with bulk products. I used to be better about it so I'm working on that. You are soo right about the vegan minimalism thing ! I am learning, step by step, to stop being such a consumer, a compulsive buyer and I am getting more and more interested in the vegan way of life ♥ It's difficult, because I am materialistic and I somehow feel the need to buy things to feel complete. I'm feeling so ugly and uninteresting sometimes, that I buy makeup or cute things that make me look (or think I look) better... instead of focusing on real problems. Cotton, jean, plastic, meat are such huge problems that I totally agree with you. Plus, I spent the whole video thinking "oh my, what a beautiful hair, what a skin", you look so pretty and yet simple, that's inspiring :3 On my way to the no poo, decluttering my home, trying not to buy useless things, I'm happy to have watched such a nice video :)

I will make it till weekend. I will clear out my wardrobe and try not to buy unnecessary things. Thank you.

I just start my journey to minimalism. I am cleaning my room from things I don't need or that I have to throw away as old papers and stuff like at! My goal on the long term is to live only with ten hygiene and beauty products, to stop buying so much clothes/earplugs...

I really appreciate that you show how veganism and protection of the planet is also minimalism. I find it a conflict to call yourself a minimalist but not be vegan. Your voice is much needed!

My diet: I eat meat because it's in humans' natural diet and I need it for my health, but I always make sure that I buy meat from farmers that treat their animals very well and make their products in the most natural way. I live in Italy so it's easy to find ethical and eco-friendly farms, but I'm sure that anyone can do this. Compliments, going vegan seems brave to me, such a change! Love yaa🖤

I just found your channel today and I love it! My mission this year has been to minimise my shopping and my rule is that I'm only allowed to spend maximum of £20 a month on "non necessities". It has helped me so much! Subscribing to your channel 😊❤️

Stop buying all kinds of trinkets.. We moved out from our house which I decorated when I wasn't vegan... When I went vegan 4 years ago I realized I didn't need all the decor. Now with our new house, I'm completely keeping it simple and soft white colors.. With regards to clothing, I too stopped buying clothes. If I buy one thing, I need to know where it comes from and I donate one piece of clothing to someone... I agree 1000% with you.. It's amazing how little we really need!

Madeleine Olivia oh girl you're such a sweetheart! It's so difficult for me to acknowledge how far I've come because I'm around so much negative energy from people giving snide remarks and sly glances for me even *attempting* to make my life better. But I've binged on *all* your videos all morning and I'm feeling so motivated and happy! just reordered some coconut oil and DIY no poo shampoo ingredients so I can get back on track! thank you so much! and I hope you get all the support and success you deserve for making everyone's lives so much better!❤

hi Madeline i wanted to say how i feel about minimalistic living. i believe in having useful things which serve 2 or 3 useful purposes and then each thing i have is multipurpose. then things take up less space. the things i have are carefully replaced or kept based on that for example i have a decanter which heats water. i use it for tea making or i have a ceramic coffee conical filter instead of the expensive keurig which i see as wasteful or coffee maschine. i look at what is it about what do i need to replace all the time to make it worthwhile to use.,i will say as i listen to that i am vegan i dont believe in eating anger generated from a killed sentient being but you jave many other reasons which i could use more info for awareness about. i want to use less toward plastic island. i dont buy plastic bags i take bags to the store and bring groxeries home in my bags or paper bags they have sometimes i use them at home for variois purposes i recycle everything possible use plastic containers that come from the store at home such as what you did with the pen and pencil can. i donated mugs and dont replace i have maybe four including my water glass. my mattress lives on plastic,on the floor i like it closer to the earth. feels more grounding this way i have plans in my head about creating a frame for it with storage underneath.i like it if i sit on the side of my bed not to be so high,up rather feet on the ground. i think of how can my life be functional with lesser clutter and impact on the environment. also can my mind be less encumbered by iritating things which dont serve me. i believe really,if its easier then it can create a more useful and easier mind. i would like a mirror and a portable easily compactable bookshelf for books i wish to replace. this is where i differ a bit. i like to have book format for chinese medicine massage therapy. important reference books i find them easier than computers.computers take s much energy from me. i find it much easier learning difesting material,from a book by the way i very much would like both of yours on making cosmetics using aromatherapy or salves and the likem i just am not aware how best to do it i have not bought shampoo for a year,eithef. i use esential oils, vinegar natural products and i keep my skin very exfoliated and clear of anything i use lotion half hour later scrub the excess away. keep the pores breathable thats my motto. anyway ive probably gone on long enough i just like,what,you,have to,say and have a bit of a congruent twist about how i do it slightly different perhaps. be well u,and yours. namaste

I want to shop second hand but I’m worried about the energy that piece may carry with it from the previous owner, does anyone else feel that way? I would say I’m a spiritual person , should I be worrying about it or not ?

wow ur so awesome. just stumbled across your channel and you have a great delivery on your ideas. I've wanted to embark on a minimalist lifestyle for quite sometime now. it's mainly my clothes. I wear a rather small amount of my collection of clothes but have a mental block when it comes to getting rid of other clothes because of that thought in the back of my head that somewhere down the road I might randomly want it.

I agree with your point about models and stuff. We feel so much pressure to buy everything. If a pretty girl wears a nice bracelet, everyone has to have it. I cannot keep up with it so I've given up x

New to your channel . . . must say I really enjoy you and your ideologies. Regarding what I've been trying to stop buying - most of what you mentioned, but also extra so-called "healthy products" like supplements, herbs, etc. They often can do just as much harm (with contraindications and whatnot) as good, and I really feel that if you eat and live well, you really won't need all of the extra stuff. Much of it's too expensive anyway.

I. Stopped buying books! I love to read but I have 3 roll away storage containers under my bed full of them and I haven't read half so I am on a book buying ban. I've also made a conscious decision to donate or pass on books I have read and will not read again so I can reduce the numbers of items I own. Great video!
@MadeleineOlivia8 жыл бұрын
You could buy from second hand book stores and switch it out for a book you own so you're able to read new things!

Jilian Rose I work with a woman who buys books at our library's used book sale and then donates them back when she's done with them. She reads all the time but only owns a handful of books at any time.

On a completely side note, I love your plants! I wish I could have some indoors, but my dogs thinks it's grazing material. I've lost 3 cute little cacti plants last year.

I recently became a minimalist and about a week after doing so I found myself going mostly raw vegan. I honestly didn't do most of this for the environment, I did it for my wallet and I have never been happier. the cost of animal products vs produce is insane. now my body, mind, and bank account are perfect. 😀

Great video, I'm glad that you spoke about breaking your addiction to fast fashion. I've seen that documentary "the true cost" and it is heartbreaking. Like you, I now only buy something when something needs replacing, and even then I tend to wait until the sales. Unfortunately I haven't had much success thrifting/shopping in charity shops in Sweden, which sucks! One thing I don't buy (and have pretty much never bought) has been kitchen roll and most people seem to think this is weird and look at me like I have 2 heads when I suggest mopping up kitchen mess with microfibre clothes and tea towels - "oh, but won't it stain them?" 99% of stains can be washed out at 60oC, the only exception of course being red wine - we clean that up with toilet paper :D
@MadeleineOlivia8 жыл бұрын
Omg I am the same, I have NEVER understood the need for kitchen roll, ever since I was young! My family never really bought it though, and when I was at uni I got mad when my flatmates did because it's just wasteful haha

I have been buying most of my clothes second hand from poshmark. The shipping cost is high but I'd rather buy from there than stores like forever 21

No animal products in my food, no expensive makeup, NO IMPULSE BUYING (actually I'm still working towards this one but generally my method is not to go to shopping centres during the day because after 10 pm the main supermarket and cinema, the only facilities there I really need in my life, are open), no books that "I might read (if I'm on a 10 h flight or something...)" and no clothes "I might wear (which often includes assumption that my body type will change drastically which will probably not happen)", and no unneeded stationary or decor (still working towards this one).
