First, as a warm up, you do not play Anish Giri, then follow that with not playing Étienne Bacrot. Then, for good measure, you also do not play Wesley So. Very similar, but not quite. Thermal baths are more of a spa thing. They also often contain added minerals and notably lack chlorine. Chess fatigues you mentally, so it's not about playing Hans, it's about playing MORE and thus being less effective. BUT, that’s not a reason to say he’s sabotaging his team. His team could say “no” and they don’t. There is a mutual respect there. Not only that, but it’s allowed in the tournament, so if his team mates consent and the rules state it, why is that a bad thing? Lastly, I could be wrong, but where does it say Magnus is the leader? Hans was the villain of this story. It's like Magnus is trying to swap places here. Be the bigger man and play him. Hans is moving toward his peak and Magnus is moving away from his. Magnus moving away from his peak is still the OBVIOUS best player. He's just improving slower than the other top players at this point, but he still beats them all. It may be that Hans peaks below the level that Magnus is at that point and Hans never catches up to Magnus. But he'll get close enough that you really can't just act like a baby and refuse to play him.

Well, Magnus was censured by the Ethics Committee for withdrawing from Sinquefeld, and paid 10,000 Euros for the privilege. But if he just wants to take an off day in a team tournament, that's basically okay. You could say it's a little childish if the reason is that he's still smarting from a loss 2 years ago, but who knows. It's his business. Board 1's don't play every round of a team tournament, and this probably isn't the first time that a Board 1 sat out to avoid a difficult opponent. Boycotting players is illegal but almost impossible to prove.

Magnus refusing to play Hans in 1v1 formats is a nothingburger; if he wants to spend a few Elo points to never deal with the guy, that's purely his decision. But in a context like a team tournament, I feel like it starts to become a matter of sportsmanship. By refusing that match, instead of playing through it and letting the dice fall where they may, you're hurting your teammates to benefit yourself. It feels like anathema to the format.

Magnus is scared of Hans. That explains his behavior exactly, and some people interpret it as Magnus having some justified reason. He doesn't. It's a team tournament. He can choose not to play because it is a team tournament. Besides, in the blitz, the last 2, it was against only 1 player because of the change of color, so Magnus couldn't sit there in one yes and other no. Moreover, Magnus said he was with jet lag. So, why giving Hans attention? Better for Magnus, to let Hans get tilted.

Well of course it's never happened, it's not like the preferred method for having a tournament is a team event. In the past, I'm sure people like Vesilin and Topolav might have avoided playing one another if they had a teammate they could tag in. I think it stands to reason that it's not the first time a chess player has hated another chess player so much they would actively avoid playing them.
