As far as the Hawk goes. We use decoy owls around to keep birds and other critters away. It helps us. The fence looks great Al.

I added wind chimes and silver flags. They don't like all the busyness. Love the two owls that "placidly" watch over my flock as well.

Decoy owls work for a while but unless you move them around frequently the hawks will soon learn that they aren’t a threat and start to ignore them.

It looked like bear claw raking, had them in Wisconsin at my cabin, put out trail cams, harvested a nice boar. Moose teeth marks would be wider and flatter to the tree. Love the fence, and you answered my previous question about a hot wire. Happy Gina is out and about, love ya'll ❤️

These are purpose built tensioners for high tensile electric fence wire. You usually connect them to a heavy duty spring that maintains tension on the wire as things move over time.

You STILL do not have a roost for those poor girls. It would be easy enough to put one in, just a 5 minute job. Remember, an electric fence is just a psychological barrier. If it does not energize for whatever reason a goat WILL breach it.
@markpashia7067
@markpashia7067 Жыл бұрын
You might have to keep the chickens inside for a few days to change up the pattern. That hawk is hanging around due to the easy pickings. If you change the pattern he/she will move on. Then you can let them out again. Also the female hawks are much bigger than the male hawks. If you ever see a couple together, you will get a good idea of how to tell. That is also true of most eagles.
@cathiwim
@cathiwim Жыл бұрын
Or, you could put chicken wire over the pen top, and the hawks cant get in. Thats what we do.
@ghannis6018
@ghannis6018 Жыл бұрын
I'll add my two cents. I'm in the Pacific Northwest and a while back my birds became a favored food source for bald eagles and red tail hawks and coyotes. Creating short term disruptions to their hunting pattern only worked when there were good alternate sources of food. When the other food sources dried up (seasonal salmon runs, foraging wild rabbits, rodents, etc.) they always came back to re-evaluate. Man-made deterrents only worked for a little while too. If they weren't moved daily, the predators quickly figured out that it won't hurt them, and resumed hunting the poultry. I even had eagles enter a coop building when I was keeping just the top 1/2 of a dutch door open, because they watched long enough to conclude I wasn't in the coop. We always used plastic owls to deter seagulls from roosting in our boathouse. Seagulls aren't smart (to put it kindly), and even they figured out pretty quickly that the owls were fake. IMO prevention is the only thing that works. Either by setting up structures that prevent the predators from having any access (poultry houses 'hardened' with wire-enclosed runs, pastured tractors, etc.). Or by putting up tall perimeter fencing and getting a LGD. I've settled on a blended approach. 1. I only keep predator savvy breeds. And always keep good predator savvy roosters, who consider it their job to watch for danger. If running a lot of birds outside in a large free-range area I make sure the rooters and hens are all in stable family-groupings. Even the best roo will only watch out for 'his' hens. 2. I only let them range within an electrified enclosure (coyote protection). 3. Within the electrified enclosures, I put open-sided covered structures for the birds to seek refuge under (hawk and eagle protection). There are enough of these structures to ensure that the birds can get to one quickly, no matter where they are. I like using open-sided Salatin-style tractors made of pvc pipe and translucent SunTuf roofing. They are lightweight, let the natural light in, and the birds under them can't be seen from above. I accept that despite my best efforts, I will still lose some birds. But it's generally because the bird wasn't predator savvy. Since I raise predator savvy breeds, I chalk it up to 'nature' culling the weak animals. If they start taking too many, I adjust my strategy and bring things back into balance. In that way the eagles/hawks & I have a mutually beneficial relationship. One tip I heard (but haven't used) is that an (apex) areal predator's only fears are having a broken wing and/or not being able to leave a place quickly. Therefore, to create an effective barrier, use these natural fears to create a scenario that makes them decide it's not worth the risk. Some people just string wire in a random multi-level criss-cross pattern, that makes it seem like the space between the wires (as seen from a distance) is both complicated and narrower than their wingspan. Not sure if that works. But it makes sense.

We have red shouldered hawks that nest on our farm. They are so bold that they would sit on top of a chain link dog kennel that we had chickens in…..I guess they thought one might get out. Since we have a tractor we have a Pekin goose that lives with our meat birds and when we don’t have meat birds, we put a dozen or so layers with her. We’ve been fortunate that just the one goose has kept hawks and owls from taking our birds. She’s the best guard goose!

@@damogranheart5521 I advise getting female goslings and raising them with chicks. I handled mine when small a lot also. Lucy will hiss at us but she’s not aggressive. I can sneak past my dogs at night but I very seldom get by Lucy without her letting everyone know lol! She’s always the first alarm to go off ❤️

Hi Lumnah Family, Would you please fing the time to mow your OGP fields before the snow arrives? All of those nutients being added for the winter will be a huge benefit for the field.

The only way to keep hawks from taking chickens is to cover the area with poultry netting. I have a plastic owl on a past that is mounted on a spring so that it moves as well as rotates. I've had the Coopers Hawks sitting on top of the owl, almost mocking that it's there.

Greetings from Tehachapi CA, I truly appreciate your Vlogs. Keep them coming, I watch daily. Hello 👋 Al & Gina, Great progress on fencing. I know nothing but I would guess Moose also. Having a LGD is great at keeping hawks away from chickens. That's a hefty electric fence. Glad you're feeling well enough to get outdoors Gina🤗 GOD BLESS LUMNAH ACRES You've been inspirational these past two years (Pandemic) 😷😕😉🤗😇 Best Regards, TTFN, Cheers

You can add a Rooster, a Rooster will defend the hens. You can also plant peppermint around, but use a container to do that bc peppermint will take over your yard quickly, also garlic can be planted. Hawks do not like these smells. Decoy owls but you need to move them frequently so they don’t think it is a trap. Have a Blessed Day.

I forgot to say Goooooood Morning!!! Gina once said and Al, I think you did also that you get up early in the morning. I believe people that do that are the acheivers and do great things. President Trump only got about 4 hours sleep a night, but what he accomplished is awesome!
