Excellent and clear method, particularly sanding up to the ridge instead of a pencil line. Thank you!

Thanks for describing you're method, looks like you've won some people over. Its a brilliant method leaving that little step to sand to. My problem was that i free hand routed the cavity, thus I had no template negative to work from. From now on templates will be used
@TornelliGuitars
@TornelliGuitars 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jurgen!👍 Ah ok I see your problem, yes I’m not sure how I’d go about making an accurate template or cover straight from a freehand cavity.

This is really just the best dang thing since sliced bread. When I saw you put the template down over the rosewood, I thought-- is there some sort of router technique I'm not aware of to turn a positive shape from a negative one?!?!? I could see the lip in the video and even though I haven't tried it yet-- I'm about to-- I instantly recognized how much better this is than trying to fudge a pencil line. Am I on the line? A smidge away? Halfway through the line? Did I just sand the line away, exactly enough?!?!?

Great tips, where I go wrong is I’ll leave it to thickness then sand it flush after attempting to cut and sand it to size
@TornelliGuitars
@TornelliGuitars 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think we all tend to do things a bit differently, it’s no better or worse I guess but I find it easier to thickness first as they can be quite fiddly to work with once they’re cut 👍

That is a great process and seriously accurate. I have heard mixed things about making cover plates. They tend to be thinner and are subject to humidity and temperature changes that happen faster then the body wood of greater thickness. Do you worry about warping, shrinking, or even splitting being that close a fit? specially since it really leaves no allowance for finish? I was worried enough on my first build I did my covers out of pickguard material to avoid those very issues. My next build will more likely have a matching wood cover as I am NOT doing another cover less build again. 🤣🤪😬
@TornelliGuitars
@TornelliGuitars 2 жыл бұрын
It’s a really good question Bill and the answer is that I’m not too sure. First, I’ll sand it some more to allow for finish so it will end up a little smaller by default. The rosewood also shouldn’t expand and contract much compared to a lot of woods. And lastly, to be honest I’m not sure I like the look of the rosewood as a cover, I may well swap it out for a cream pickguard material, but I did want to demonstrate how it can be done accurately. Whichever way I go I’ll cover it in the next video and my reasons why. 👍

The method I use is to make a template that matches the cavity template and you reproduce covers spot on every time in very little time. Stick cover to template and route. Its worth spending time on getting the template right in the first instance though.
@TornelliGuitars

Yes, agreed, I’ll be doing the same method to make the reusable template. 👍

Do all of this but on a 1/2 inch MDF, dial it until it fits perfectly and boom you have your cover template.

Do you do any work for anyone. I don’t have the tools that you have. I just had a custom telecaster body made and the control covers are plastic which I would like to be flame maple as the back of the guitar is. I do have the covers that came with the body like I said. If your interested in making me a set. We can make arrangements for me to send you the covers I have and you could duplicate them out of the maple. Let me know your thoughts. Great work by the way. I love your channel.
