Simply brilliant. I have a thought - it would be great to make one that is tunable to different keys by adjusting a sliding part. This would open the door to playing in additional keys without worrying about half-covering holes. But I suppose changing the length would change the required distance between holes. So the sliding part would have to spread the holes too in proportion to on another - like a slinky. Maybe a variation on Mr. Curly. Something to mull on.

Is it possible to create an clarinet / sax like sounding instrument that would be as easy to play as flutophone (I think also known as song flutes, tonettes, precorders) using sax mouthpiece and plastic tube with holes designed for simple fingering? Also, it would be nice to avoid overblowing because that's really confusing for beginners when tone suddenly jumps up if you decide to blow a bit harder - those "flutophones" are good in this regard because they are very forgiving to blowing force and don't jump up. It would be nice to have a "DIY clarinet" that could be played just as easily.
@timescobedo35127 жыл бұрын
Flutophones, Tonettes, and similar instruments are actually globular flutes akin to ocarinas. Which is why they rarely have a range of more than about an octave plus a note or two. They don't really overblow like a cylindrical or conical bore wind instrument. However, it might make a good experiment regardless. Some Flutophone-type instruments have a non fingered hole at the end that might work, but some don't, like more conventional ocarinas. In which case, the lowest usual note at the very least will not blow because all the holes will be closed. I seem to recall the Flutophone has a non fingered hole on the bell end. But the Conn Song Flute and a Suzuki version do not. I recall a version by another company that had a dummy bell on the end, no hole at all.

Hi Linsey, thanks for sharing your ideas. I like your videos very much! I made the 12,5mm soprano clarini with 4C sax mouthpiece. I like the sound of that thing but is very different than your (you can see video in my channel). What reed are you using? When you play those instruments, you use an clarinet-like embouchure or a saxophone-like embochure? Thanks!
I bought the book, I'm trying to do the C major polypipe clarion but I feel the pipe is too small for the mouthpiece, the connection feels a little bit lose, I got the correct outside diameter so i thought I shouldn't be having that problem. Is it right like that or should I get a bigger diameter?
@SquealyD10 жыл бұрын
mouthpiece diameters vary slightly, you can use electrical tape to increase the diameter for a tight fit.

It's for mr curly
@SquealyD10 жыл бұрын
Robin Van Goethem Hi Robin, Your Mum should let you buy the pdf (only $4.99) but because you're so keen here are the measurements: Mr Curly 6 fingers - F, alto sax mouthpiece Mr Curly is a narrow bore contra-bass clarinet. Initially I used narrow bore pre-coiled garden hose. With a bore of this length the fingerholes are too far apart to play if the bore is straight and so I have brought the fingerholes close together by creating a spiral. The spiral is formed by wrapping the tube around a 40mm diameter aluminium tube. This tube has no effect on the sound of the instrument and could be another material such as PVC. NB: Mr Curly works best as an electro-acoustic instrument. The acoustic sound is very soft. I use an in-bore microphone which I attach to the mouthpiece, this picks up the internal bore sound. I also process the sound slightly, enhancing certain frequencies and add phasing. The pickup I use is a Danabug, and although these are no longer available there are other similar wind instrument in-bore microphones available. eg: PT100PV clarinet pickup - www.poullath.com/ I originally used pre-coiled narrow bore garden hose, but this is not always easily available, so the measurements are for clear vinyl tubing with an internal diameter(ID) of 8mm. KZbin clip for Mr Curly: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6aZYYCtpbKcpdk Use clear vinyl tubing with an internal diameter(ID) of 8mm. After marking the the positions of the fingerholes the tubing is wrapped around a 20cm length of 40mm (OD) aluminium tube (it can be any material as long as it is 40mm OD, it has no effect on the sound). I simply use electrical tape to hold the tubing in place(see photo). Use a 50mm length of standard garden hose to fit on the end of the 8mm tube (you will need to build up diameter of the 8mm tube with electrical tape to create a tight fit). The garden hose extends 15mm past the end of the 8mm tube. The alto sax mouthpiece then slips tightly onto the garden hose. To make the fingerholes I use a 6mm OD metal tube which I heat with a gas torch and melt the holes (don't breathe in the fumes - use a mask). Bore diameter - 8mm, OD - 10mm - 11mm all fingerholes: 7mm aluminium tube diameter - 40mm, length - 20cm distance of top end of tube to: thumbhole (F) - 590mm 1st fingerhole (E) - 660mm 2nd fingerhole (D) - 805mm 3rd fingerhole (C) - 950mm 4th fingerhole (Bb) - 1095mm 5th fingerhole (Ab) - 1245mm 6th fingerhole (G quarter tone flat) - 1385mm 7th fingerhole (F) - 1535mm end of tube (Eb) - 1750mm

A couple questions... Do these instruments all use the same fingering system? And if so, is it like a recorder system? Also, I play sax/flute/clarinet in small ensemble jazz settings (coffee shops/etc) and is there anything (whether in writing or in your opinion) that you would have against people making these and playing them on gigs? I would always tell the audience where the model came from, but I wanted a "blessing" of sorts from the man himself before I even thought about doing so :)
